24.01.2022 Bushfires in Australia - How we are helping..... 2020 has already been a very busy start for the HorseVetDentist team. We've had some very interesting surgical cases with complex tooth extractions and happier horse's as a result. Thanks to our fellow veterinary colleagues for the referrals. In addition, last week we spent three days being hosted by Steve Halfpenny Light Hands Equitation. More posts to follow about that fantastic trip and our referral cases.. We continue to ...remember the communities, horses/livestock and wildlife affected by the devastating bushfires in Australia. Many of our clients and friends have been impacted in NE Victoria and we especially remember them. We are hoping to assist in the field with our skills and have volunteered our services as a veterinarian (Paul), zookeeper working for Zoos Victoria (Christine) and local CFA volunteer (Josanne in Admin). We will all do our part to help when required. In addition to our equine dental services, we have had for a number of years a strong working relationship with Zoos Victoria at Melbourne Zoo & Healesville Sanctuary assisting with veterinary dental care in a number of different animals and so we feel a real need and passion to help our vulnerable wildlife. To help immediately with the plight of all, we have donated all the proceeds from the last week of dental work to assist with the care of wildlife, critically endangered species and our communities impacted by bushfires, pledging donations to the following charities https://blazeaid.com.au https://www.zoo.org.au/fire-fund/ The Kangaroo Island Mayors Bushfire Appeal Fund We hope that the recent rain will reduce the ongoing threats to these areas. Take care everyone. The HVD team!

20.01.2022 As we enter 2020 we wish you all a safe and joyful New Year. We thank you for your support in 2019. The year begins with many of our dear friends and clients in NE Victoria and NSW impacted by the horrendous bush fires currently active in these regions. Our thoughts are with you, your family and animals at this very difficult and distressing time. We will continue to give our support in every way possible.
20.01.2022 Our services during COVID-19 During this difficult and uncertain time, we wanted to reassure our clients and the wider horse community, that we are striving to offer the same level of veterinary dental services to you all. We are also very aware of the heightened need for safety both to our clients and our own staff.... If you have any concerns about having your horse examined, we are happy to assist in any way possible. During our dental days, if you wish to minimise contact with other people, we can attend to your horse with our staff member available to handle your horse. If we visit your property, we are also able to offer these additional safety measures, to minimise contact / exposure. We will maintain our normal biosecurity practices during this time. If you are feeling unwell prior to a planned visit, please follow the protocols set out by the health authorities. Contact us and we can discuss the best options to maintain essential dental care for your horse without comprising the health of people in attendance. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. Keep safe and look after each other at this time.

18.01.2022 Annual Australasian Student Veterinary Conference. It was fantastic to be part of this week long event held this year at the University of Melbourne Veterinary School. Students from New Zealand, Australia and Asia regions attended to learn everything veterinary!! Congratulations to those that attended the equine veterinary dentistry stream. We had fun learning all about dental health in horses, and most importantly how to perform a dental examination, using dental instruments and headlights! A big thank you to Kellie May from https://www.facebook.com/VirbacAustraliaHorses/ who kindly donated caps and more importantly brand new headlights for students attending!! The conference finished off a great week of teaching veterinary undergraduates in the selective stream of equine veterinary dentistry. More photos and updates to follow!
18.01.2022 We had our annual visit to the RDA a couple of weeks ago to do all the horses & ponies health checks and dental examinations. This wonderful charity is a personal favourite of the HorseVetDentist team and every year we donate our services to all of these great horses and ponies. We had a fun time - gave everyone a really good health and dental check-ups. It was great to give all of them a clean bill of health and to address particular needs going forward. Most importantly w...e spoilt them all with lots of Smooches! It’s the favourite treat of the HDV due to its low sugar content. Christopher Robin, resident cat, watched on all day (well actually slept!) & was found guarding the treats to make sure only the horses received them. Thanks to all the wonderful volunteers for what they do throughout the year. Hopefully, the RDA will be back to normal soon after the Covid restrictions. Sally Francis and Tooradin Estate have been especially supportive at this time. Keep up the amazing work to all at the RDA. Special mention to Hygain for their contributions to the RDA and HVD team!!
17.01.2022 This is sure to be a great day - informative presentations on equine health related topics and what a great place to visit. I’ve been told there is great food & wine at this lovely estate!! Please come and support a worthy cause for Bushfire relief and relax with food & drinks too. Great prizes available!!!
17.01.2022 We wanted to share some fun videos but with a important message about sugar!! Does your horse suffer from cavities (caries) in their teeth?? Many horse owners are not aware that horses often suffer similar dental disease to humans. When we consume a lot of sugars, either as lollies or other high-sugar feeds, we are at risk of developing cavities in our teeth. These are filled by our human dentist to stop the cavity damaging the sensitive part of our teeth leading to tooth ac...he and potentially a tooth-root abscess. Feeding your horse high sugar diets or treats can cause EXACTLY the same problem!! In our next post we will show you the impact of these feeds and in particular OATEN HAY!! But for now, what's the best treats for your horse?? In moderation carrots are great and the best treat I have seen are SMOOCHIES manufactured by Hygain! https://www.facebook.com/HygainFeeds/ They are a complete hit with horses we work with. Beet pulp and legume base with Fenugreek, gives a palatable but low-sugar treat. Horses LOVE them Check out Monkey!
16.01.2022 This is an excellent article that discusses recognising pain in your horse by studying facial expressions. Presented by world authority in Equine lameness, Dr. Sue Dyson, from the Animal Health Trust, UK, it emphasises how many horses present with "behavioural issues' when in fact they are in pain. Remember pain can come from any part of the horses body and the mouth and dental pain is a huge problem too!! Take a look.
15.01.2022 This week we visited the RDA Doveton/Myuna Farm for a very busy day performing health checks and dental examinations on all the horses. Nine horses were given the best attention, lots of treats and of course dental examinations!! RDA is a wonderful charity giving so much to the community. The HorseVetDentist team donated all their work for free to say a huge thank you to these incredible horses and volunteers! Volunteers are always needed and welcomed at the RDA!
14.01.2022 Just back from a whistlestop tour of Germany meeting with some of the world authorities in veterinary dentistry! The trip began with an incredible day with Prof. Carsten Staszyk at the University of Giessen Veterinary School - Carsten is a leading veterinary anatomist and has done extensive research in equine dental disease. Even got to see a sperm whale specimen at the local museum, prepared by Carsten and his team after it was beached and sadly died. Out of tragedy comes... good with school children doing projects on the health of our oceans, the impact of pollution and plastics and conservation. The rest of the week was spent developing further skills in endodontic treatments (root canal therapy) and caries restorations with Dr Manfred Stoll, Dr Torbjorn Lundstrom and Prof Carsten Staszyk - brilliant mentors and a generous and welcoming team at Manfred's dental clinic. All this to offer the best in veterinary dental care to our client's horses and referring veterinarians back here in Australia!!
12.01.2022 It was great to be a part of this terrific event. Congratulations to all for supporting a worthy cause, enjoying lovely food & wine and increasing our knowledge on equine health!
12.01.2022 Hello everyone. Hope you are all coping okay in the current Covid climate. I am sharing this from a friend and colleague at the University of Sydney Veterinary School. I think this is a very useful survey and I encourage all horse owners to complete it and share their experiences and feelings around colic surgery. Take care and keep safe. The HVD team
11.01.2022 Free blood testing for PPID (Cushing's syndrome) is back for a limited time! This is a wonderful opportunity to get your horse screened if you have a suspicion of PPID. The signs are vague at times and not always associated with sore feet (laminitis). Dental disease, sinus infections and a weak immune system are all very important side effects. The HVD team are offering a small number of tests. Ask your own veterinarian about this special offer which will only run for a f...ew weeks. Check out the website www.talkaboutlaminitis.com.au for further details.
10.01.2022 Following on from our fun video of why we recommmend (and horses LOVE) Smoochies by Hygain, due to their low sugar content, we wanted to explain the more serious consequences of feeding high sugar diets to your horse. As we mentioned in our last Post, horse teeth like our own, can get cavities or caries and literally rot away causing severe dental pain!! We spent three days in January working with Steve Halfpenny from Light Hands Equitation who is acutely aware of the impact... of sugar on his horse's teeth. One of the biggest culprits is oaten hay - a hay very high in sugars (often called water soluble carbohydrates/non-structural carbohyrates). Many of us were not aware of the impact feeding this hay or other high sugar feeds and treats on dental health. Thanks to the great work of dental vets we began to discover the dangers of sugar and no more so than in Western Australia where the effects began to be discovered. We have so much to learn about caries in horses, as there may be other causes not just sugar. A veterinary colleague, Dr Kirsten Weber Dental Vet in WA is currently doing a PhD researching this very topic - this is a great start and we look forward to her findings. For now, be very aware of what you feed your horse and take a look at these oroscopic images of inside one of Steve's horses mouth and the devastating effects of sugar! Whole sections of the teeth have been eaten away by sugar and bacteria - no different to your teeth if you eat too many lollies and don't brush your teeth!! Steve and his horses are on the long road to recovery - we are getting great results thanks to Steve's committment to changing their hay source and feed type. We will maintain dental examinations and treatments to support their teeth and keep them painfree and happy. Think twice about your treats and feeding! Good luck!! https://www.facebook.com/light.hands.equitation/ https://www.facebook.com/dentalvet/
04.01.2022 We are continuing to offer our veterinary dental services through this difficult time. Our "social distancing" measures to prevent contact between our staff and clients are working extremely well. Thank you to everyone for your cooperation.... We are able to handle your horse without your presence, carry out the full examination and dental assessment and relay all the information to you. At all times we are adhering to strict PPE and disinfectant procedures. By ensuring safety to our staff and clients we are able to maintain this essential veterinary service and continue to maintain the health and welfare of your horse. Keep safe everyone. If you have any concerns our questions regarding our veterinary visits during this time, do not hesitate to contact a team member.
03.01.2022 One of our dental patients we check annually at the zoo- the wonderful Semangka- the Malayan Tapir. Check her out at this great Post. Getting the best possible care by the dedicated team at Zoos Vic! See you in a couple of months Semangka for your dental check up !! https://www.facebook.com/278932298067/posts/10157542295623068/
01.01.2022 Wishing everyone and their beloved horses a very merry Christmas. We hope you all have a safe and happy holiday season. We especially remember all those communities, animals and wildlife impacted by the bushfires at this time.... Instead of sending christmas cards, the HorseVetDentist team have donated to the wonderful work carried out by the Koala Hospital Port Macquarie https://www.facebook.com/koalahospital/ & Blaze Aid https://blazeaid.com.au, helping communities and wildlife impacted. They desperately need our support. Happy Christmas !! From all the team xxx
