22.01.2022 Rome wasnt built in a day - but certainly a tready (and a few more...). Our supply chain is holding up, #horsegym in Germany is almost back to the pre-covid 19 output and hopefully all travel restrictions within Australia and NZ will be a thing of the past soon. We are realistic but we cant hold our horses anymore! Have a great weekend!

17.01.2022 Sometimes it is still tempting for the founder of #horsegym to have a play with the latest toys in the workshop... The G2 treadmill (special edition) is definitely setting new technology (and safety!) boundaries on equine training equipment used for performance assessment. Among other areas, this type of treadmill can be used to perform endoscopy on thoroughbred horses. The treadmill allows the user/vet to examine the upper airway of an equine athlete while it is exercising ...at high speed. This type of dynamic evaluation is very useful in determining if the horse has an upper airway abnormality affecting performance. There are certain abnormalities of the upper airway that only become evident during high-intensity exercise and will not be seen during a resting endoscopic evaluation. The examination has to be tailored to the type of work and the level of fitness for each horse, mimicking the speed and distance that the horse typically works on the track. The endoscopic examination is recorded and evaluated in slow motion so that subtle abnormalities are identified. See more

11.01.2022 Like a lot of hands-on trades out there we have more or less perfected the "social distancing" at work but quite frankly, craving for the end of all this... Stay safe everyone, almost there!

10.01.2022 Lacking of strength? No need to run around - just go for a walk! The development of "strength work" (top-line, bottom, ...) on the treadmill can be most effectively done by utilising periods of simply walking at an incline between 4 and 6.... The time periods which you are able to do this depends on the fitness of the horse, with these times varying from 15 min up to 30 min. Depending as well on your other training goals, these sessions can be repeated in line with your daily / weekly training regime (before / after riding or trackwork, swimming, lunging, etc.) #horsetreadmill #horsetraining #equinetraining #equinerehabilitation #treadmillforhorses #horsegym

09.01.2022 A good way to brighten up the day at Busuttin Racing during these gloomy times. Business is certainly not "as usual" with permits to fill in, masks in your face and the forgoing of hand shakes to close the deal. Nevertheless, if we can save lives with those restrictions in place, we wont complain.

08.01.2022 AQUAgym: Low intensity exercise - stay fresh during training! Beyond rehabilitation and pre-training, water treadmill exercise is also a great add-on for a freshen-up - the practice of reducing exercise and/or stress before or between a competition(s) for thoroughbreds. Freshen-up periods with the use of a water treadmill have been shown to improve performance in racehorses. Already a period between 7 and 14 days within a prolonged in-training period may be beneficial in t...erms of maintaining performance and avoiding injury in a racehorse. In particular thoroughbreds have a tendency to a naturally high stride frequency and are often more forward going, maintaining a higher stride frequency on the water treadmill than other types of sport horses. Because of the nature of the drag force in water, this tends to be self-limiting, in that the faster they try to swing the limb, the greater the resistance to movement. Evidence from the human literature (Running on land and in water: comparative exercise physiology by Svedenhag & Seger) suggests that the rate of perceived exertion during water walking is higher than the equivalent workload overground. If the horse also experiences an increased perception of work performed while water walking, this aspect of water treadmill exercise could be beneficial in maintaining the psychological well-being of the animal during rehabilitation involving prolonged periods of low intensity exercise.

04.01.2022 When is a treadmill as noisy as a "busy street"? What does "noise" actually mean? What does it mean for a horse, horseman/woman and your non-horsey neighbours, who actually dont care whether youre on a training mission at 5am to win the Melbourne Cup or a Maiden in Moe? (both important though!). Sometimes the concept is abused for fluffy marketing slogans ("We are the quietest in the market!" Queen Victoria? Paddington? Salamanca?) rather than explained properly to users...Continue reading

01.01.2022 Designing training programs - what to consider before you turn on the tready... Training success in general is affected by many variables; The program design is one of the most underrated aspects of training (conditioning). The aim is to design a holistic program that will result in energy and muscular development suited to the combination of strength and endurance that the event requires. ... There will always be variations in what trainers / riders do with a horse, depending on the age, nature and injury status of the horse, its response to work and the past experiences of the trainer / rider. For thoroughbred racing in particular, the transition from the paddock to the stage of moderate work is a high risk period. All trainers are aware of this and take a horse through the foundations of training, with initial long slow work, medium pace work and then finally the sprint work. What varies is the time period spent at each phase and the intensity and/or duration of the work within each phase. This variation is based on sound judgement by the trainer in relation to both the past history of the horse and how well the horse copes with the existing work, as well as the time period available to them before racing. It is presumably the time period till racing that creates the most stress for the trainer. In terms of muscular, skeletal and mental adaptations, the time frame in which they are expected to have the horse prepared to race is generally tight. For example, for a horse coming from a long spell, bone density decreases with training and may not be increasing for some 50+ days after the commencement of training; this indicates that undue stress within this time period may increase the likelihood of injury. The design or structure of a training program needs to consider the following aspects: Goals you have in mind in relation to the nature of the event the horse is being trained for. The time period that the horse has been out of training or the initial fitness status and age of the horse. Training facilities and training tools available. Climate in which you live. A training program needs to be soundly based and individualised with consideration to the above variables in an attempt to match the ability of the horse and the type of race it is being trained for... tbc
