22.01.2022 As professionals, an important part of our education is knowing what NOT to remove when trimming. I should be able to walk up to a hoof and make a decision on ...what that hoof needs for its movement and conformation and wear patterns, to keep the horse moving soundly. For example, the mare pictured here had a hind end injury a few years ago that affects her movement behind. She overly wears the lateral side of her hoof, and flares on the medial side. Balancing these medial flares helps her move comfortably, but the lateral side of her foot is already maintained with the wear from her own movement, so I try not to touch it with my rasp- not even a swipe. We aren't paid for how much hoof we remove, but for our education in knowing what to remove and what to leave.

21.01.2022 Here is another photo in the 'my horse doesn't need to be trimmed' saga. I didn't think to do the pretty half/half photo, but you get the drift. If I were to s...kip this trim and leave her til next time (which I'm asked regularly to do) By the time 4, 5 or 6 weeks came around for the next trim this hoof would be a bloody mess! There is a method in my madness (in fact it's not madness at all), you don't get good feet by skipping hoof trims. It's that simple! And if you expect your horse to be ridden or compete for you, don't make them do it on unbalanced, long and overgrown feet!
20.01.2022 Lots of us ask to see the rads but do we really know what were looking at from a farriery perspective. Illustrated below are the a common list of structures visible on lateral and DP x-rays as well as some of the measures we can use to help inform our shoeing plan
20.01.2022 Nice hoof after an overdue trim.

17.01.2022 Van start to see where his frog should be in his damaged hoof The recent rain we've had has helped to soften his hooves so I could remove dead material. David Landreville, River is alot like Lady the Palomino, he lets me do a little than he has to feel, smell his hoof before he lets me do anymore. I actually have to go from left to right hooves alot in a trim. By the end of this trim He was saying "that's enough". River has come along way, I can have his foot for 1-2min at a time now. Used to be 20sec to a min max 6mths ago
17.01.2022 Man Of Courage 11yr T.B gelding approx 16.2h. He is just settling in so have only given him a quick trim. These photo's are before trim. I think I'll be doing little weekly trims on this fellow!!

06.01.2022 After trim I always think I'm not trimming her right, or making any progress. And than I look at early day photo's. JC has to be trimmed every1-2 weeks. I love her dearly
06.01.2022 I can credit the polo world for a true concept of proper fitness for performance horses. In good programs, the horses often go out twice a day. They go in sets ...of 3-5 or so horses. They walk for an hour (walking is IMPORTANT too), they trot for 15-20 minutes or so & walk some more. Most are singled several days a week. They short work/school them & breeze them out often. You have to condition their lungs too (that’s a whole other conversation I won’t go into right now but we’ll talk about it later). These horses are in incredible shape. They have to be. I find proper conditioning to be undervalued & quite frankly, many lack knowledge on it. Whether they truly don’t know or they don’t care to know is a different story. You cannot pull your horse out of the pasture on the weekends & go expect them to perform for you after not touching them all week. You’ll always see the bragging posts like pulled sparkles out of the pasture after seven months off & entered the jackpot last night!! 7th in the 6D even outta shape!! I’m EMBARRASSED for you. That’s not impressive. Personally, I find it cruel & selfish. That’s like someone pulling your happy ass off the couch after hibernating all winter & making you run a 5k. Do better. Be better.
06.01.2022 Absolute serenity with JC and Epona having a pick of grass
05.01.2022 After trim today Epona is on a 3-4 week trim cycle
05.01.2022 Cheesy Before and after both front
05.01.2022 I always have time for young or troubled horses and inexperienced owners. If said horses and owners improve with each visit, they are great clients. Said Owners of young and troubled horses that don't improve make me question is it worth my effort.
04.01.2022 Let the horse wear his foot naturally barefoot, and then trim him the way he wears. The horse wears his foot the way he does because that is what is mechanical...ly and biologically correct for him. Your eye and ideas are not nearly as good as nature’s. From,Dr James R. Rooney, and author of The Lame Horse Causes, Symptoms and Treatment and worldwide authority on equine anatomy, pathology and biomechanics
