06.01.2022 Panic, Panic!!... No wait, Control. If you can't Insist, then you're NOT in the leadership position with your horse. If you can't Insist without your horse gett...ing scared of you; "flight," or if you can't insist without your horse arguing with you; "fight," then; when it all matters, when the chips are down, when the rubber meets the road ...you're going to be in big, big trouble. In the series of pictures, the "rubber met the road," and this horse's "follow the leader" broke big time! This was the first time this horse had ever seen Buffalo...and that sent him into sheer primal panic mode. Buffalo are big smelly, fast moving, intense, intimidating creatures so I don't blame him one bit. But what it gave me with this horse, was the opportunity to show him there's never anything to worry about when I'm at the helm so to speak. So what does "Insisting" have to do with any of it? It was sketchy for a couple seconds, but because I was able to INSIST, able to CONTROL him through it (versus him going into a blind runaway situation...which believe me I've been in too many of those), he inturn learned a very valuable lesson... And that was; when a human is involved, he has nothing to be afraid of, and he can actually CONTROL the situation if he listens. Another point here, is that this horse is a highly trained horse. He's very sensitive, but control and following direction was a big part of his training regimen... Yet it still broke in a big way when tested. So those of you out there that don't work on your horse following your direction; the "aww, it's ok, it doesn't really matter" type mentality, or teaching/coaching your horse to follow you no matter what... You can be setting yourself and your horse up for catastrophic failure. You Have to be able to Insist...your life, or someone else's life will depend on it one day Have a great Saturday, Kalley
