22.01.2022 At Armoin we are always excited when we get to welcome a new member to our family as a foal is born. Many people ask me ‘How do you end up with such well-rounded friendly youngsters with their own distinct personalities that haven’t soured from too much work too early?’ As per all of our training we teach to the individual and in this case also need to remember the mare is a crucial part of this journey, so our training starts with the mare before the foal is due. All o...ur training after the foal is born goes gently, not putting the foal under any pressure and taking it at a pace both mare and foal can handle. Less time, and more quality in the session is better with foals (and all horses for that matter) - handling sessions of less than 10 mins is all they can handle at a young age. One of the main learnings that foals get here at Armoin is to come off pressure front (chest) and behind well before we even bring a halter into the paddock. By the time we start halter and leading training we have a willing, quiet foal who finds the transition easy to learn and not at all stressful. As we are coming into foal season if you would like to hear more about our methods or are a ‘first-time’ mum and have a million questions please feel free to contact me on 0437 906 510 or via PM. Also this year we do have a 1 month old foal and mare that we have just purchased so if you would like some hands on foal training please feel free to contact me :)

20.01.2022 I have found over the years that 'the pause', 'the relax' or 'the rest' as it is sometimes known is one of the most needed and under utilised items in a lot of people's horsemanship toolbox. It’s that special moment where you have asked for a skill and your horse hesitantly takes that first little try in the right direction.... what should happen now is you relax, take off all pressure and stand quietly for a moment. This to the horse is praise for a job well tried and allow...s thinking time. For some horses the pause might only need to be 10 seconds for others they may require up to 5 minutes depending on how long they need to mentally process the skill. As humans what we see is 'ahhh there it is that's the step I want but it's not 'big enough or quite right' so let’s keep asking till it’s perfect...' even better if we can get more and more steps. The problem is by the time you get this step perfect your horse might have been over faced or worried and will be less willing to try next time. I see over and over again horses becoming anxious, worried and stressed about everyday things as they have been pushed into 'over-trying' in the past. So next time your horse gives you a 'try' relax, breath out, pause in the moment and smile. Be happy in that you are progressing with the skill and be excited that it will come soon softly, willingly and with harmony.

10.01.2022 A common question I get asked is 'What is it that you do with horses?' This doesn't have a simple answer however I work with you and your horse as INDIVIDUALS to move you towards harmony together both on the ground and in the saddle. I am here to assist you and your horse to have a harmonious relationship and to work together as a team. Starting at liberty (no halters out in an open space) we aim to form a connection and encourage your horse to accept your ideas as their ow...n, seeing you as a herd influencer. As the word Armoin is Gaelic for harmony, our business name 'Horsemanship with Armoin' literally means ‘Horsemanship with Harmony’. I teach private, group lessons and clinics from beginner through to advanced students anywhere in WA. I come to you, or you are more than welcome to come to Armoin, our 350 acre property in Crossman (1hr from Armadale or 1hr from Mandurah) for lessons or clinics and stay the night in our Nature Based Camp. We have an assortment of areas to have horse play in throughout our property including playing in and through the Crossman River and an area with bridges, podiums, and scary corners etc. Please contact me if you would like to discuss your horse or pony either through facebook, email at [email protected] or call 0437 906 510.
