25.01.2022 EEK...this is why we insist people wear appropriate footwear around horses!

25.01.2022 A great discussion, thanks again Horse SA, always on the ball. Horse Safety Australia endorses the use of helmets when riding on the roads. In fact, we recommend people wear an approved helmet whenever riding. There is clear medical/scientific evidence that riders have a far better chance of avoiding serious brain damage if they are wearing an approved helmet when they hit their head during a fall from a horse. These days helmets can be light and comfortable, as well as col...ourful, and if you are worried about sunburn....a lightweight brim can be attached (with a weight of the two together being the same as a wide brimmed felt hat.) Something else to consider: often drivers are not aware of the dangers they are putting us in, and have no idea how quickly a horse can spook, or how easily they could cause a devastating accident. While it might be good to have a massive education campaign for the general public, and a number of new rules and regulations, another strategy is for us to consider the risks and control them the best we can, and try to avoid being in the situation where a vehicle related fall may occur. We don't want to be 'that accident waiting to happen'! We could ask questions like: Should we even be on a busy road on our horse, which is reactive and shies? Can we desensitize it to traffic beforehand? Can we ride with another quiet horse between us and traffic, and start training it on quiet roads etc.... And yes, we agree that 1 m clearance is not nearly enough... It is even possible that regulating this distance could be counter-productive, by implying that it is OK to travel at speed this close to horse! See more

23.01.2022 Our website has a document which summarizes lots of information for those getting back to running their horse businesses. The document covers : the stages of getting back to work with clients, what paperwork and systems you may need, keeping records, how to clean saddles (if you provide them to clients) ... for coaches: a link to a free online course about your responsibilities and what you need to know horses and the virus (can horses pass it on?) Go to Horse Safety Australia's home page and look for the link under : "Running a horse business during Covid19" www.horsesafetyaustralia.com.au

16.01.2022 Her brains bounced around like a ping pong in her skull after she was kicked in the back of her head! It is not always the inexperienced riders who get into strife, and this rider is convinced her helmet saved her life! See her storyhttp://www.horseandhound.co.uk/news/riders-brain-bounced-like-ping-pong-ball-schooling-fall-650682 Horse Safety Australia uses the British Horse Society as its authority for its recommendations on safe helmets...see below.

15.01.2022 The next few HSA instructor clinics are booking up quickly. If you want to come please contact us so we can hold a place for you. The one in Queensland already has a full quota and we have sent out emails to those who have registered to tell them that they must confirm by paying their deposit ASAP, as we already have a waiting list! Also, we are negotiating the dates for a general clinic to be held near Campbelltown in Sydney soon. Look on our website for registration forms, or send us an Expression of Interest form (also available on the website) and we will notify you once the NSW dates are set. www.horsesafetyaustralia.com.au

10.01.2022 Horse Safety Australia This is an interesting research paper from the UK demonstrating the usefulness of wearing hi-vis vests when on the roads with traffic. We all know from our own experiences that most non horse people do not understand horse behaviours and many pass too close to horses on roads...often through ignorance. It is an easy step to wear hi-vis, and the direction of 'slow and wide' helps. Vests with this direction printed on them are available from UK if you want one. (We are not going to advertise for them here, as we are not linked to them, and do not run a shop, but the idea is great, and even just hi-vis is better than nothing.) 04.01.2022 To all our members and friends who have been devastated by the fires currently in so many parts of Australia, our thoughts are with you. The past few days must have been so terrifying, and our hearts go out to those who have had to leave their homes and their precious horses behind. We hope you are all safe and have been able to keep your animals with you or placed them somewhere they are out of danger. These are such hard times for so many, if you think we can assist in any way please be in touch with our office. We are happy just to hear your stories and talk to you if that is a help....

03.01.2022 Like any piece of equipment Smart Rider breakaway stirrups need to be properly put togetherIf disassembled (say you pull them apart to see how they work) when you push the separated part back into the locked position they must be reassembled from a 90 degree (or right angle) position at the base where they connect. If not done properly they can get jammed and the breakaway function no longer will be activated and the safety purpose of the stirrup is lost. If you are not sure... of what we mean, check the youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ey5V7-WeiWA . Look specifically at the point 1.02 for how to reassemble the stirrup. We recommend that if you are using this product you check that it has been properly assembled by pushing on the lever with both your thumbs until it releases (it should snap loose) and then reassemble it as described above. 02.01.2022 Due to public demand we have another clinic coming up in Victoria, on 5-9 August 2019. Like the one next week (no room left at that one) it will be held at Mill Valley Ranch near Pakenham. Registration forms are available on our website. Come and have your instructor or trail guide skills recognised by Horse Safety Australia...and you will have accreditation to do the work you are involved in. The Safe Work Australia Guide for managing the risks of beginners riding horses say...s you need recognised qualifications to teach them...here is your change to get this. The currently advertised clinics are all booking out quickly. We had one in Queensland last month and there is one in Victoria next week, and there will be another in Sydney later in July (which currently has only one place left) and also be one near Gympie in QLD in September. Get in quickly before they all book out! www.horsesafetyaustralia.com.au See more
