19.01.2022 **The following post shows images of an equine stomach post mortem. ** STOMACH SIZE I get asked all the time about feed and all manner of horse care topics. Alo...ng with all of the usual discussions about type of feed for particular horses, weights of feed etc... there is the topic of HOW MUCH to feed. How many dippers of chaff, how full should the 20litre bucket be, 1 feed per day or two??? Through the amazing process of dissections we have been involved in, we always look at the stomach. Sometimes finding ulcers or bots and varying degrees of health of the stomach lining. One thing I’ve noticed is that the larger horses of mixed breed (say between 14-17hh) is that the stomach size doesn’t vary all that much. Horses are grazing animals, we know this. Horses do well on smaller feeds more often, we also know this. A lot of people struggle to truly grasp this until they see it or it is explained thoroughly enough for them to fully understand from an anatomy perspective. Here I will show you a stomach (approx 15.2hh tb mare) she had had a normal breakfast but also a big special bucket of carrots and apples right before being laid to rest (not her daily feed, just a one off treat bucket) and then the contents of that stomach in relation to a very average sized 15 litre tub. I will also show you the absolute MAXIMUM sized feed I would ever feed a horse of that size. There are plenty of great articles around that talk about overflow of undigested feed into the hindgut and the subsequent problems, feed sizes and ulcers, gut health in all forms but I’m not here to talk about that. I am simply sharing in order to give the average horse owner a deeper understanding of the relative lack of size of the average sized horses stomach ** This post is not about what to feed or even how often. That will be very specific to each horse, it’s environment and situation. Please seek advice from your trusted equine veterinarian or independent nutritionist. ** Dissection with thanks and in conjunction with Southern Holistic Equine & Ev’s Equine Services

14.01.2022 ATTENTION TO ALL PARENTS WHO NEED TO TELL THE TRUTH ABOUT SANTA - You have to be Santa Claus too now Son: "Dad, I think I'm old enough now. Is there a Santa C...laus?." Dad: "Ok, I agree that your old enough. But before I tell you, I have a question for you. You see, the truth is a dangerous gift. Once you know something, you can't unknow it. Once you know the truth about Santa Claus, you will never again understand and relate to him as you do now. So my question is: Are you sure you want to know?" Brief pause... Son: "Yes, I want to know" Dad: "Ok, I'll tell you: Yes there is a Santa Claus" Son: "Really?" Dad: Yes, really, but he's not an old man with a beard in a red suit. That's just what we tell kids. You see, kids are too young to understand the true nature of Santa Claus, so we explain it to them in a way that they can understand. The truth about Santa Claus is that he's not a person at all; he's an idea. Think of all those presents Santa gave you over the years. I actually bought those myself. I watched you open them. And did it bother me that you didn't thank me? Of course not! In fact it gave me great pleasure. You see, Santa Claus is THE IDEA OF GIVING FOR THE SAKE OF GIVING, without thought of thanks or acknowledgement. When I saw that woman collapse on the subway last week and called for help, I knew that she'd never know that it was me that summoned the ambulance. I was being Santa Claus when I did that." Son: "Oh." Dad: "So now that you know, you're part of it. You have to be Santa Claus too now. That means you can never tell a young kid the secret, and you have to help us select Santa presents for them, and most important, you have to look for opportunities to help people. Got it?" Help each other this Christmas and...be kind Author Unknown

13.01.2022 What are the Real Basics in Training? - With Dr. Andrew McLean - Ph.D. (Equine Cognition and Learning) BSc Zoology, Dip Ed. When talking about training horses i...n particular begins Dr. McLean, we are talking about training that comes from pressure and release which is called negative reinforcement. That means that a response or behaviour is strengthened by stopping the pressure. The horse moves away from pressure of the rider’s leg and the horse is rewarded by the removal of the pressure. Close your fingers around the reins, the horse responds and the pressure ceases. It is the removal of the pressure that is the training aid more so than the pressure. However, it is important to back up negative reinforcement with some positive reinforcement and that is called Combined Reinforcement. That means that when we apply the pressure and the horse responds as we ask, we remove the pressure and say good boy and give him a scratch on the wither as a positive reinforcement. Not all the problems we encounter with horses are of our own making, but I think we should blame ourselves for a lot of it. Issues that can affect the progress of our training are the horse’s health, as if it is in pain any training is at least compromised and unethical. The horse’s conformation too has a bearing on its ability to perform certain movements and this must be taken into consideration. However, we also have to recognize that some horses have a greater propensity to do things that we don’t want. I.E. some horses would never rear and some do so at the drop of a hat as we discussed a few months ago. It is the same with any kind of hyperreactive behaviour, some horses are much more wired to offer it early. The way I see it when you are asking a horse to do something, it is as if it has a pull-down list of responses and the one you want may be below kicking out or rearing. The horse’s propensity may be part of the response, but by and large we make a lot of mistakes in training...read more: https://www.horsedeals.com.au//what-are-the-real-basics-in

11.01.2022 Elvis Presly had around 20 horses during his lifetime. He bought horses for his friends and bodyguards, It didn't matter if they wanted one or not, they were ge...tting a horse! Elvis got into horses like he got into everything; he eased into it right over the top. Elvis cared deeply after his horses. After a hard ride, Elvis would walk his horse three times longer than necessary to cool him out, just to be sure the horse was safe to return to pasture. He was fastidious about the barn area, and personally marked each person's tack hook and stall Daddy's, Priscilla's, Mine The labels remain in the barn to this day. One of his favourite breeds was Tennessee Walking horse. The last horse he purchased, passed away in 2005 at the age of 32 years old, a Tannessee Walking stallion named Ebony's Double purchased in 1975. While, one of his horses, Mare Ingram lived to the age of 50! His personal mount was a Rising Sun, a big, beautiful palomino Quarter Horse. Sometimes Elvis would ride down to the gates of Graceland and show off for his fans, sit and chat from the saddle, and sign autographs. Then to their gasping admiration, he'd take off on Rising Sun at a dead gallop back towards the barn. Elvis was so attached to Bear, a Tennessee Walking Horse, that when the horse died while Elvis was on tour, no one would tell him until he got home, fearing how the news would devastate him.
