24.01.2022 HORSHAM’S YOUNG CITIZEN OF THE YEAR 2021 We are absolutely thrilled to see another one of our volunteers be awarded Young Citizen of the Year in Horsham’s Australia Day Awards 2021. Bart Turgoose is the fifth Horsham Ag Society member/volunteer to win the award since 2016 following on from Dalton Cross, Ian Walter (senior award winner), Dusty Cross and Zack Currie.... Bart has been volunteering with the Ag Society since he was 13 and he’s now working part time with us as a school-based trainee for his Cert III in Business. He was heavily involved in our 2020 virtual ag show along with all our events. But we’re not the only organisation Bart is involved with. Read his incredible story in the article published by the Wimmera Mail Times Newspaper. (Photo credit: Mail Times) https://www.mailtimes.com.au//volunteers-honoured-in-cou/

22.01.2022 Our major sponsor, the Weekly Advertiser has summed up Horsham Young Citizen of the Year, Bart Turgoose perfectly! Great reporting Sarah Matthews! https://www.theweeklyadvertiser.com.au//bart-turgoose-qui/

18.01.2022 Not everyone has a Merry Christmas, so we’re doing our bit to support a community Christmas lunch in The Cattle Shed, Maydale Reserve tomorrow. If you know of someone who’ll be alone tomorrow, please phone Mandy Kirsopp 0408 826 727 to book them a seat at the table. If you are blessed to have family and friends to celebrate with, we would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year.... https://www.theweeklyadvertiser.com.au//horsham-communit/

14.01.2022 COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENT A decision has been made to cancel New Year's Eve by the River. This will come as no surprise to our followers as we see Melbourne cancelling their event as we all try and keep crowds to a minimum as we step out of COVID and into the New Year! While we need events to keep us sustainable, our volunteers put in a huge amount of time and effort to prepare for New Year's Eve and this year, we will be able to spend it with our families while enjoying a cool... drink and reflecting on the year that has been. We look forward to kicking off our events in 2021 with our @150kmFeast on February 20 & 27, which has already sold out. We take that as a cue for a strong recovery in 2021 and continue with our plans to improve the historical precinct known as Maydale Reserve for the community to enjoy.

13.01.2022 A day in the life of the Maydale Reserve. Today. Thursday December 17, 2020. 7.30am - Tim our social garden manager opens the historical Langlands gates for the day. 8.00am - Troy starts by chipping away the weeds and gets the sprinklers on. Troy’s wage is subsidised by Axis Employment Services. He works every Thursday. ... 8.55am - Four members of a Work for Victoria team arrive for duty! 9.00am - Andrea arrives and gets a work plan in place for the staff. 9.05am - A second team of Work for Vic arrive unexpectedly. Suddenly work is being pumped out at a rate of knots plus there’s two girls on the team who are a welcome addition to balance the ratio to become 9 men to 3 women! 9.30am - Andrea is interviewed by Rebecca on ABC radio to discuss the cancellation of New Years Eve celebrations at Maydale Reserve. 10.00am - Garth arrives to work in the garden with Tim who is qualified to work with people with a disability. The social garden is a lovely setting for Tim to mentor and upskill these young people. (We currently have a vacancy). 10.45am - Wes swings by to complete paperwork as a volunteer to meet his Mutual Obligations for Centrelink benefits. The Ag Society is a registered organisation for volunteers. Wes is a former Work for the Dole participant and he loves us so much, he’s returning to volunteer 15 hours per week in the new year. 11.00am - Phil pops in for a review of the work plan as supervisor for Work for the Dole which will resume on Jan 5 after going into COVID remission in March. 11.15am - the Mayor, Cr Robyn Gulline calls in for a coffee in the workshop and tour of the reserve. We made her welcome and sent her away with a head full of new knowledge! 12.30am - Some staff from Centre for Participation make their way down to set up for their Christmas party at the garden. 1.45pm - Andrea sneaks off to Bunnings to pick up some plants which were earmarked for the bin but rescued for us by the amazing Sarah, their community engagement officer! 2.00pm - the team from Centre for Participation arrive for their Christmas gathering. 2.30pm - Mandy arrives to discuss the dynamics around hosting a Christmas lunch for the lonely, in The Cattle Shed. 3.15pm - Andrea rushes off to pick up Wes (another Wes) from Axis Worx for his bi-weekly after work care and helps Troy with a few jobs. 3.30pm - A second tour of the Maydale Reserve is conducted by Andrea for ‘entertainment’ for the on site guests. 4.30pm - Everyone goes home and Andrea flops down at her desk to finish a few jobs before a surprise visit by former committee man Matt Ough who’s on leave from the Australian Royal Navy! She finishes the day with a home visit to our oldest active committee man and councillor, Ronnie who is nursing a sore rib following a trip over the ‘Hoover’ last week. He finally admits to feeling his age at just 90! What a day!

11.01.2022 The Horsham Ag Society is very proud of this young man, who was awarded the 2021 Young Citizen of the Year for the Horsham Rural City Council today, Australia Day. Bart Turgoose has been volunteering with us since as a 13 year old in 2018 and now at 16 he steps into Year 11 as well as a school based traineeship with us, to undertake his Certificate III in Business. Bart is a classic example of how volunteering can lead to greater opportunities. Bart is also on the board of ...Business Horsham and a committee member of Natimuk Field & Game. We take pride in all our volunteers and our recent record of Australia Day Award recipients looks like this.....6 awards in 5 years! 2016 - Dalton Cross (Young Citizen of the Year Award) 2018 - Ian Walter (Citizen of the Year Award) and Dusty Cross (Young Citizen of the Year Award 2020 - Zack Currie (Young Citizen of the Year Award), Horsham Show (Community Event of the Year) 2021 - Bart Turgoose (Young Citizen of the Year Award) But today is Bart's day.
