24.01.2022 Last week Hort Innovation revealed the first results of the SITPlus Pilot which involved releasing sterile fruit flies each week from a plane in Hillston, NSW and Cobram, VIC. In Cobram, the sterile fruit fly releases contributed to an 83% reduction in Queensland fruit fly activity, while in Hillston, initial analysis indicates that wild Queensland fruit fly were detected in very low numbers in town and almost undetected on nearby farms. 22.01.2022 This week's Pollinator of the week is the European Honey Bee. Known for being the hardest worker in the land, Honey Bees are the largest managed pollinator in the world responsible for pollinating 80% of the world's plants, representing over 90 different food crops. In Australia, thousands of hives are shipped across the country each year to service crops, and it is very important to monitor the health and strength of these commercial hives. New approaches using sensing techn...ology may be used to monitor hive health and performance using temperature, humidity and counting the bees as they come and go from the hive. Find out more about the research we're funding through the QUT (Queensland University of Technology) to look at non-invasive methods and systems for the assessment of hive health: https://www.horticulture.com.au//research-reports/ph17001/

16.01.2022 Last week, the daughter of Dimbulah Mango and Avocado growers, Jessica Collins had the whole country talking when she debuted the final project for her Year 12 design and technology class. Over 1,400 mango seeds were sewn together to make this gown, demonstrating an innovative and stylish way to fight farming waste. There are always thousands of kilos of mangoes that just go to waste and they just don’t make it off the farm. I’ve always wanted to solve that problem. In the future, maybe we could use the seeds instead of having to just throw them out. I would love to see mango seeds turned into a fibre, like cotton.

13.01.2022 Introducing the next Pollinator of the Week: The Common Drone Fly. These hardworking flies are known to carry just as much pollen as honey bees, making them an important pollinator for horticulture crops. Drone flies are originally from Europe but due to their generalist feeding habitats and ability to cope with intensive land uses, are now widespread around most parts of the world. Fun fact: Drone flies are particularly common on yellow flowers and tend to visit many flowers that bees find less attractive. They are called the ‘Drone fly’ as they look very similar to male honey bees known as Drones.

05.01.2022 Introducing our final Pollinator of the Week, the Australian Stingless Bee. These small black bees that often get mistaken for flies do not sting (hence the name stingless) but they can bite! They live in social hives (like the honey bee) with a distinctive spiral brood comb and store honey and pollen in separate pots. Usually found in warmer tropical regions, they are the native pollinator of Australia’s only native nut crop Macadamia. They also love pollinating apples,... strawberries, and mangoes. Interesting fact: You can attract these bees to your backyard by planting a range of flowers including herbs like thyme, basil and lavender as well as native lilies and flowering gums. To find out more about our Stingless bees project with Western Sydney University visit: https://www.horticulture.com.au//research-reports/ph16000/ Want to know what to plant to attract native bees? 03.01.2022 The citrus industry is one of Australia's largest and most valuable horticultural industries with produce grown in almost every state and territory, allowing for many different varietals. They're currently in season, fresh, delicious and ready to buy now.
03.01.2022 An ongoing pollination research and development project looking at increasing yield and quality in tropical horticulture recently proved that cross-pollination occurs in the majority of macadamia orchards. This means that cross-pollination is critical for nut production and maximising yields in macadamia orchards. Australian Macadamias Society CEO Jolyon Burnett said "This research is helping to put the pieces of the puzzle together. We’re now beginning to understand the crit...ical components. There is a lot of interest from Australian macadamia growers because of the potential for better pollination to improve yields and increase kernel recovery." https://www.horticulture.com.au//cross-your-Is-and-dot-yo/
