02.01.2022 Wow!!!! we just love it when we have guests who join the tour who have a personal Hotel Corones story to share and boy was today’s a Beauty! Today we were joi...ned by Mr Rodney Palmer and his partner Lynne Thompson (pictured) from the A.C.T During today’s tour Rodney told us his father the then young Regiment Sergeant Major John David Palmer (also pictured - photo supplied by Rodney Palmer) of the Australian Army was in Charleville in 1941, staying in basic room 29 ( no ensuite) at Hotel Corones. Well as it turns out there was another visitor in Charleville that night.... quite unexpected as it would turn out as the entire town was completely full accommodation wise! This visitor, quite the V.I.P and a face well known to every Australian alive at that time and today since. Well in trying to get a bed for the night this VIP entered Hotel Corones which like everywhere else was completely booked out. Upon enquiring with bar staff regarding getting a room one of them yelled out..... which one of you lot would like to give your room up for Robert Menzies, Prime Minister of Australia. It was Rodney’s father who put his hand up and gave his room (No. 29) up, and then took up residence for the night sleeping on the Verandah. WOW, we're still digging to find the reason for Robert Menzies unexpected visit to Charleville that day so stay tuned for further information as we find out. Rodney and I seem to think after discussion and the timing it may have possibly had something to do with the Top Secret American Air Base that was later constructed at Charleville Airport in 1942 during WWII. As we said WOW and watch this space for more!
