20.01.2022 Important Information about Windows 7 Microsoft has announced that anyone still using Windows 7 is essentially living on borrowed time, security updates to Wind...ows 7 will stop on 14 January 2020. Windows 7 has been around for 10 years. It is a good track record especially considering how the technology landscape has dramatically changed. Just the staggering increase of online threats which have been designed to directly impact Windows 7 users in this time is very concerning. So what does this mean if you’re currently using Windows 7 as your operating system? When Windows 7 support stops on January 14 2020, Microsoft will no longer provide the following: Technical support for any issues Software updates Security updates or fixes the system may still run as it did before, but with a significantly increased risk of being targeted by viruses and hackers if you are ever online. Almost ALL businesses work online and use apps, online accounts, online banking, stock ordering, social media, etc. This puts YOUR BUSINESS and YOU in a position of playing Russian roulette. Windows is incredibly popular and widespread in the business world, which means it’s under substantial attacks from viruses and hackers at all times. Just because Windows 7 is old doesn’t mean the hackers will forget about it, it actually puts them in a great position knowing there are millions of easy targets out there. They know SME’s and Small Family run or Home-based businesses tend not budget for IT failure, upgrading OS or making sure the right security is in place, to stop them. So for them YOU and YOUR BUSINESS are the best targets , especially given that figures suggest around 40% of all Businesses are still running on Windows 7! So what are your options? Simple you can pay to upgrade to upgrade to Windows 10, if your computer meets Microsoft’s minimum spec requirements. If you have a Windows 365 Business subscription, you can upgrade for free. But again your computer must meet Microsoft’s minimum spec requirements. While it is possible to install Windows 10 on your older devices it is not recommended, the actual reality is taking this opportunity to upgrade your business hardware and software. I.e Purchasing a new computer or laptop and at the same time either subscribing to Windows 365 or purchasing a legitimate copy of Windows 10. Microsoft’s current strategy for Windows 10 is that it’s going to keep updating and upgrading it, rather than working towards a Windows 11 style solution. Also budgeting and saving so you can plan, back up data and upgrade all of your business systems and hardware before Windows 7 reaches the end of support, is another option. This will put your business in the best possible position and deter potential threats from hackers.
