25.01.2022 Saving the planet , one un gOdly creature at a time

17.01.2022 Many high profile science journals and publicly funded research programs now require that research data is published to make it freely available. The intention... is to stimulate new collaborations and analysis based on existing field data, which is resource intensive to collect. A new problem being observed worldwide, is that publishing location data and habitat descriptions can unintentionally lead to poaching of the very species that the research is working to recover. To compound the matter, the rarest and most endangered species are those most likely to be targeted by poachers. Our research Hub publishes our research data when it is safe to do so. Data publishing guidelines by the Australian Department of the Environment and Energy have special provision for sensitive ecological data. This means for example, that if we surveyed a population of rare orchids, we would not publish the location in case it led to collectors digging up the wild plants.
