24.01.2022 Another member of Cat-Rabbit’s menagerie printed, packed & ready for their lucky new homes! This is 'I am a Bunny (after the rain)' from Cat’s exhibition 'A (mostly) Fabricated Mycology' at Outré Gallery last October. This bun is a limited edition of 100, printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308gsm. Thank you so much, Cat! (´`)

23.01.2022 If there’s one thing we’re not too great at, it’s sharing the work we do. Which is a crying shame, frankly - we see amazing artwork on the reg, and we’ve been keeping it all to ourselves! H&B is a two-person operation and while being a small studio has its perks, it also means that we’re laser-focused on keeping the cogs turning and the printers running hot. Too often orders leave our studio before we’ve had the chance to get a snap. No longer! We’ve enlisted the help of our... good friend and long time collaborator, Tatanja Ross. T has been photographing H&B since the early days, and will be regularly documenting some of the editions we work on - meaning we can share them with you all, way more often. Here’s one T took two years ago (can you believe it Indi!): an art reproduction we created from Indigo O’Rourke’s stunning original drawing, entitled Fifty Minutes (available through Indi’s website)

23.01.2022 More coverage of artist-run initiative Cream Town. Thanks Concrete Playground Melbourne! Pictured image is 'Schlurp' by Brodie Clark, available as an A3 archival pigment print (limited edition of 10).

23.01.2022 Recent editions for Flora Waycott We’ve been working with Flora for a few years now and despite the distance (Flora is based in Perth) we’ve also been lucky enough to meet a few times. This February just passed she also held an exhibition at our favourite local design store, The Boroughs Store - complete with sake! These relationships are ones we hold very close, and make us reflect upon how lucky we are to do what we do. It feels so fitting to sign off for this week with a missive from Flora’s Winter Wreath print. Stay safe everyone Flora prints on Hahnemühle Bamboo 290gsm.

22.01.2022 Hi folks! We’ve had to bring one of our EOY cut-off dates forward by a few days: Orders for collection from the studio must now be placed by 9am Friday, Dec 11 for us to have them complete before we close on the 18th. Postal order cut-offs remain the same (phew!) In such an unprecedented year it’s been tricky for us to forecast our workload, so we hope you’ll accept our apologies! With the order volume we’re seeing at the moment - and the finite number of hours in the day -... we’ve had to revisit our earlier estimates and be realistic with what we can achieve. October/November is always our busiest time, and as restrictions have also eased during this period our workload has increased exponentially. Thankfully, we do have an extra set of hands on deck now - some of you have already met our amazing new studio coordinator, Hannah. She’s the best, and we’re so lucky to have her help! We know our turn around times are longer than standard at the moment, and we’re grateful for your patience and understanding through this crazy busy time. We are pulling out all the stops and working some longggg days so we can print as quickly as possible, while ensuring we still give each and every order the care and attention it deserves. 21.01.2022 As promised: print-wrangling pointers, Part Two. The second instalment is a how-to on safely rolling your prints for the post. Handling big prints can be a bit of a task given how delicate archival pigment prints are, but once you’ve got a few essential points sorted, the rest is easy! Here’s the down-low: 1. Wherever possible, large prints (over A3 in size) should be sent in a tube rather than posted flat. Things to look for in a tube: - Your tube should have a wall thicknes...s of 3mm, minimum. Any less means it won’t be strong enough to withstand knocks in transit. - Your tube should also have a diameter opening of at least 80mm. Don’t try to fit your print into a narrower tube, or roll your print any tighter - this risks bending the stock, and a bend = permanent damage. 2. When re-rolling your print, always roll it with the printed side facing outwards (as it was initially rolled). This follows the natural curl of the paper, and the direction it is fed through the printer. If you roll the printed side inwards, the pigment may lift or crack as the paper is rolled against its natural grain. 3. Using two hands, so there’s even reinforcement along the print length, gently roll your print in a stable/acid free material to protect the printed surface. We use acid free polypropylene sheeting for this but archival barrier paper (aka glassine) is also excellent. Tissue can be used too, but not for prints that have a lot of deep, dark tones or block colour on smooth matte papers - tissue can create friction that may graze the surface of your print. 4. Wrap a paper band around the roll to keep your outer layer in place - but be sure to put tape on the paper band only; placing any adhesive on the sheeting/barrier paper is risky as it increases the chance of adhesive coming into contact with your print when it is unwrapped. If you need any pointers about print handling or packaging, please drop us a line anytime! After ten years in the biz, we’ve got a lot of handy tips and are always happy to share And if you find these mini FAQ’s helpful, please let us know if there are any other topics you’d like us to cover, and we’ll keep ‘em coming! 20.01.2022 ‘Octopus Study’ by Natalie Ryan was the very last artwork reproduction we completed before lockdown put the service on pause. We digitised Natalie’s original artwork, careful to preserve all the intricate detail and delicate tonal gradation while also mitigating any unwanted sheen/reflection that can occur when graphite works are captured. We then produced a limited edition run of 30 prints, with Certificates of Authenticity to match. The edition + COA’s were printed on Hahne...mühle Bamboo, a lovely match to the paper the original was created on (extremely important for artwork reproductions!) Natalie’s incredible original pencil drawing was a finalist in the Lyn McCrea Memorial Drawing Prize (Noosa Regional Gallery), and if you're lucky (and quick!) there's still a few prints from this edition available - see @natalieryan__ for details. Thank you so much for entrusting us with your precious work, Natalie See more

20.01.2022 As of today (September 22) contactless collection is again available for clients residing within 5km of Brunswick. If you are eligible for contactless collection, we'll let you know when we confirm your print order and make the necessary arrangements with you once your job is complete. Contactless collection is strictly by appointment only, and conditions do apply. If you have any questions, we encourage you to get in touch with us - we're very happy to help!... Artwork below is by the wonderful Edith Rewa, photo by our friend Tatanja Ross / On Jackson Street.

19.01.2022 It's a new year - and we're launching a new newsletter! It's a quarterly dispatch full of H&B updates, artist features and handy fine art printing tips. The first edition is out this week, and includes a first look at our 2021 Services Guide. Sign up below and keep your peepers on your inbox!

19.01.2022 Hey folks we have a very important update to share with you all. Due to the worsening COVID19 situation in Melbourne, we have decided to voluntarily lock-down the studio. We will still be operating, but in an online-only capacity until further notice. This means that all orders will be post-out only, but we’re currently investigating a number of different freight options to give you loads of flexibility! In earnest, this is a really scary decision for us. H&B supports us... both full-time and we know that this decision is likely to decrease our income and stability, but it feels like the right decision to make given the current situation. We take the health and safety of our community and our clients extremely seriously, and it’s up to us all to do our bit to try and stem this outbreak. While we are fortunate to live and work in the same building (meaning we have no commute and can isolate while safely continuing to work) we feel it’s our due diligence to discourage people from being out and about at this particular point in time. Some housekeeping things: Online ordering is temporarily unavailable today while we adjust the system to these changes. If you have existing orders with us that were to be collected from the studio, we’ll be in touch to make arrangements with you. If this makes it financially unfeasible for you to order prints (due to the additional cost of postage), please please contact us. We know that many folks have lost their main source of income due to COVID, and the cost of postage can be a big addition if you’re printing-on-demand. We want to make sure that our services are still accessible to you, and are here to support you in any way we can. If you have the means, please consider a donation to Foodbank Victoria. We are mortified at what is going on in the Kensington & Flemington towers, and a donation to Foodbank will directly help. Remember to take care of yourself, and those around you.

19.01.2022 COVID sure has thrown us all a few curly ones, but we’re still here for you We have a watertight Covid Safe Plan, military amounts of isopropyl and the will to use it, and no real reason to leave the building (we’ve never been so grateful to live on site). Despite Stage 4 restrictions (scary, but not as scary as the alternative) we can continue printing -with a few caveats, of course. To encourage people to comply with expert advice (ie stay home), we are not offering c...ontactless collections under any circumstances - even if you live within a 5km radius of the studio. Yes, this means that all orders are post-out only, but we offer a veritable smorgasbord of delivery options for all budgets including Australia Post, Sendle, courier, DHL and same-day courier services for Melbourne metro (by quote). All scanning services (including post-in) are unavailable until further notice. Our studio is now closed to the public, excepting our daily postman visit (thanks Alan!) While we miss seeing everyone, we ask that you please don’t visit the studio during this time. Our thoughts are with our mates who have had to close their doors, and the many (many) people who have lost employment as a result of the worsening conditions here in Victoria. We’re in a bit of a pickle, it’s true. Hang in there, Melbourne. There’s good on the other side of this, and Spring isn’t far away on_jacksonstreet

18.01.2022 An update from H&B HQ: We're still receiving lots of enquiries asking if we are still operating. The answer is yes, we definitely are! We are fortunate to live and work in the same building, which means we have no commute and can isolate while (safely) continuing to work. The majority of our services can be ordered online - as many of you will already know, we have a robust online ordering system that will help us all through the next few months of isolation/potential lock ...down. Thank dog for technology! We really miss chatting with you all, but we are now offering phone consults in lieu of face-to-face consulting. We know there are some things you just can't do on the phone though, so we can mail out paper samples right to your door, or even organise test prints with reduced rate postage for you - more on that soon. So it's business as usual, just with a bit of a twist We intend to continue working as long as we possibly can, but have (and will continue to) modify some services in line with Government recommendations. Stay safe, and if you have any questions at all (or just want to chat to someone!) please reach out to us anytime. Cassie, Peter & Dash

17.01.2022 Hi folks! A quick update to let you all know that the studio will be closed from June 15 to June 22nd (inclusive) for a brief mid-year maintenance break. We'll be making changes/upgrades to our production equipment and operation systems, and must close (temporarily!) to get this important work done. We won't be taking orders over this period, but don't worry - online ordering and all regular operations will resume from June 23. Thank you for your understanding and if you have any questions at all, don't hesitate to get in touch!

17.01.2022 Sign of life! We’ve not been very active on instagram lately but we’ve been blown away with all the print orders coming in. Thank you! You lot are the best. Just a quickie to say hello, and a good excuse to show off this ripper Samantha Curcio print we worked on this week. Keep your eyes peeled on her instagram because they’ll be available for sale - soon! Printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag, A2 size. Personal fave?

17.01.2022 We have an important update to share, so we hope we can have a few minutes of your time. We are receiving a high volume of inquiries concerning one matter in particular, so we wanted to post our response here to let you all know our game plan. Understandably, the most common question is whether we will be ceasing operations due to COVID-19. ... The answer is a resounding no. We will continue running H&B as long as we possibly, and financially, can. However, we will need to keep on our toes and think laterally throughout the tricky times we have ahead of us. We have and will continue to adapt so that we can work within the new circumstances we’ve all found ourselves in. As many of you will know, we’ve already made some changes to the ways we work (dang it - we really miss chatting with you in the studio!) and things will most likely continue change yet. But we WILL be here for our clients, and will continue to give you our all for as long as we can. Over the coming months we’ll do our very best to be as communicative and open about how things are going here, and what our plans are as they evolve. At the moment, our focus is on developing new procedures and offerings that will help us all roll with the punches that the next few months are going to bring. Lemons = lemonade As always, we encourage an open dialogue so if you have any questions, concerns or just want to have a chat with someone in these sad and uncertain times, give us a hoy. We’re always here. Big love to everyone, hang in there. One day at a time. x Cass & Pete / H&B Thanks to the wonderful @carla_mcrae for this sweet H&B portrait

15.01.2022 Three whole weeks after declaring we’d be sharing more print work.... here we (finally) are! A little thing called lockdown V2 kinda got in the way there. First up is an edition we recently printed for Chanel Tang, one half of Creature Creature Studios. ‘Roast Duck on Rice’ is Chanel’s submission to More Of Something Good and pays homage to a particularly sentimental dish. These beauties are currently available through Creature Creature Studios shop - limited edition of 30, A...4 size, and printed on Canson Printmaking Rag. Roast Duck on Rice is also available at Roast Duck Inn in Box Hill (you can thank Chanel for the hot tip!) photo by Tatanja Ross @on_jacksonstreet

14.01.2022 ‘Mandarine Picking’ by Izzy Huang Printing for the artist collective Cream Town has been keeping us nice and busy - just the way we like it! There are now over 100 artists involved and the caliber of work is incredible. We wanted to sneak in and say a big thank you to everyone involved, and everyone who has purchased prints - you’re not only supporting artists, but you’re also helping this small biz keep the printers running and our lights on. We are more than grateful -... we’re counting our lucky stars Special thanks goes to Isaebella Doherty and Bronte Pleasance, the dynamic duo behind it all - you are absolute powerhouses! Izzy's work (and so much more) is available via Cream Town - every artwork is available as an open edition and is printed (with a whole lotta love) on Canson Rag Photographique 310gsm

14.01.2022 It's that time of year again! We’re announcing our EOY deadlines early because they fall a little earlier than usual this year, and we wanted to give you plenty of notice. 2020 has disappeared in the blink of an eye, which is a mighty strange feeling after enduring three long months of lockdown here in Melbourne. As Victorians now know well, our postal service can be a little wobbly - so we’re going to be hyper-organised. Our last work day for 2020 will be Fri Dec 18; to com...plete your jobs before we close, these are the dates for your diary: Print orders International Post (DHL): Tues Dec 1 Parcel Post (within Australia): Mon Dec 7 Express Post (within Australia): Fri Dec 11 For studio collection: Mon Dec 14 These deadlines for postal orders should ensure delivery pre-Xmas according to current Australia Post advice, but it’s yet to be seen how our postal service will hold up. As a precaution we’ve been conservative with our deadlines to give our hard-working posties a little extra time. If you miss these dates, please get in touch - we’ll do our best to help you out! This said, it’s called the silly season for a reason, so it’s best to get your order in as early as possible. Other important things of note: Scanning & art reproduction: restrictions have largely put a hold on scanning, though we’re slowly getting the service back up and running. The process is now a little different, but please get in touch and we’ll see if we can help. Print-on-demand/dropship customers: If you are able, we strongly encourage ordering stock to keep on hand. This time of year our turn-arounds are a little longer, so having a physical inventory will give you more control over your own order dispatch times. H&B summer break: our mid-year holiday plans, well they didn’t quite go to plan, so we’re taking some time out over January instead. We’ll be back in the studio and raring to go on Mon Jan 18. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to flick us an email or give us a buzz! Artwork and photography by two talented mates: Neva Hosking; Tatanja Ross / On Jackson Street

14.01.2022 Due to the Stage 4 restrictions in place in Victoria, we are operating strictly online-only (under the Govt 'Click + Deliver' definition) until restrictions ease. Printing will continue, though turnarounds are affected due to reduced staff on-site. Two thirds of our team are working remotely, and during this time email communication is preferable. We are available by phone, but as we are not on-site we may not be able to answer all of your questions. If you call with a query... we can't immediately assist with, we'll take down your details, liaise with our team and get back to you as we can. This may not be same day, so we appreciate your patience under these circumstances. Our studio is closed to the public until further notice, without exception. We are operating strictly online-only; this means all orders must be posted. Contactless collections are not available until restrictions ease. All collections currently booked in will be contacted with new options for order delivery. We don't yet know if this lockdown will be extended, so we hope you'll understand that we cannot provide a re-opening date at this point. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us - we’re always happy to discuss any concerns you may have. Rest assured, we are doing our best to minimise disruption to service as much as we possibly can Thank you for your understanding, and stay safe! We got this, Victoria

13.01.2022 Cream Town (with support from Hound & Bone Studio and Icon Frames) are running a raffle to raise funds for five First Nations organisations. You could take home a framed A1 print of this beautiful work by Isaebella Doherty, proudly printed by us and impeccably framed by Icon Frames (worth $650 total). Entry details in the post below. You've got to be in it to win it!

12.01.2022 When Adrian Jung asked us to print for Community Rent back in June, we couldn’t say yes fast enough. Rent have assembled an impressive roster of artists, all of whom have generously donated works to raise funds for local grassroots movements. 100% of profits are split between select indigenous-run initiatives, all working tirelessly on the front lines to continue the fight for justice and equality: Warriors of the Aboriginal Resistance - WAR, Pay the Rent Grassroots Collecti...ve, and Justice for Tanya Day - Remember Her Name. At a time when we’re all trying to cope with confinement, it’s important to know there are still ways you can directly support artists and social enterprises working hard to affect change. Pictured is Afternoon Lilly, donated by Abigail Javier. All Rent works are printed in our Brunswick studio on Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308gsm. From Rent: "Like you, we’re feeling pretty weary with the current state of the world and while outrage is understandable, ACTION is what’s needed. After centuries of making this land our home, it’s time we gave back to our indigenous brothers and sisters. Creating a sense of community has never been more important. Be safe, be strong, be part of the movement." : Tatanja Ross - @on_jacksonstreet

12.01.2022 In these strange times we’re all adapting to new ways of working - which for many of us means leaning on the postal service much more. So we thought we’d share some advice, in two parts, for handling larger prints - in particular, packing and unpacking them. We know it can be a bit daunting given how delicate archival pigment prints are and how unwieldy a large (and sometimes curly) print can be, but once you’ve got a few essential points down pat, the rest is easy! PART ONE...: UNPACKING (the fun part!) If you’ll be framing your print, hand it to your framer in the original package - hard as it is to resist the urge to unwrap it! If you must unroll your prints, follow these instructions. Find a flat, clean surface. Ideally wear cotton gloves. Next best is food-grade latex. If going nude, ensure your hands are clean/dry. Slide the outer paper band off your print and recycle. Don’t unpick the tape - you don’t want any adhesive near your print. Unroll the print and place it print-side-up on the flat surface. It will want to curl back on itself, so having a friend to anchor it will help. Reposition the archival sheeting. Ensuring that the printed surface is protected by said sheeting, place a few smooth, flat, heavy objects on the very ends of the print. Leave for a day (if you have the time/space). Remove objects and have a squiz. If it still wants to spring back, replace the weights and give it more time. The more densely inked the print and the smoother the paper, the less flattening time required. If your print features a lot of negative space and/or is on a textured paper, this process can take time (textured papers, and alpha-cellulose papers in particular, hold memory for a longer period). The larger the print, the quicker it will flatten. Very important: never (ever!) roll an archival pigment print in the opposite direction to its natural curl. This will damage the paper and the pigment. Stand-by for Part Two on Monday. If you find yourself needing any pointers about print handling or packaging, please drop us a line anytime! After ten years of print-wrangling, we’ve got a lot of handy tips and are always, always happy to share Artwork by Sorcha McKenzie, photo by Tatanja Ross / On Jackson Street.

11.01.2022 We’ve been busy printing the first round of orders for Cream Town - and today they also popped up in The Design Files! We know for a fact that a number of editions are moving quickly - each print is limited to just 10 prints, so if you have your eye on one (or a few) it’s be wise to get in sooner rather than later

10.01.2022 We might be stuck inside, but we still have the good fortune of gazing on beautiful images of happier times & places. This is 'Tell Me What To Do' by Taner Ufuk, and it's available for purchase (as a limited edition of 10) through a new initiative that's been set up to support artists through these rough waters (more on that below!) It's been a tough two weeks. We're hoping everyone is hanging in there (especially the self employed, the small business owners, the freelancers,... and those in the casual workforce - we see you). Spirits are low, and things feel pretty scary. So we were really pleased when Isaebella contacted us with a brilliant idea to help support so many of the artists whose livelihoods have already been affected by the effects of COVID-19 on our creative community. Cream Town is a curated online market place for artists, allowing them a new revenue stream in times when they're unable to exhibit or show their work publicly in any way. There is also the option to donate in addition to your print cost, in which case the donation will be split evenly between all artists involved. We hope you'll have a look (go on! you can even do it from the comfort of your own couch). We also hope you're all keeping safe and well - and are staying indoors! <3 http://www.cream.town/

09.01.2022 The studio has a new phone number! 03 9001 8647 Psst: text messages cannot be received (nor forwarded from our old number) so please use email for text-based correspondence.

06.01.2022 2020! So much has happened, but so little at the same time. Like literally everyone, our plans didn’t pan out - but nevertheless, this year taught us so much. We had to continually adapt (at times, clumsily!) and just keep going, even when we didn’t know how - or if - things were going to work out. Becoming an online-only business overnight was a challenge in ways we didn’t expect, but it gave us the chance to reflect on how we can better serve our clients, and what we really... want our business to be. For all of the above, we are exceptionally grateful. There have been achievements, too. In January we raised over $18k for the CFA (Country Fire Authority), all thanks to the generosity of the artists involved in our Art for Bushfire Relief Fundraiser and 254(!) of you who bought a print. In March, COVID struck but out of that came Cream Town, which almost single handedly kept us afloat through a really tough time. Thank you to Isaebella and all CT artists for having us! In November our business (very quietly) turned five, AND the amazing Hannah joined us. This month, we’ve laid foundations that will allow us to grow in the way we’d planned for this year - more on that in 2021! The thank you’s we need to say are endless. A special one goes to Ashley Ronning for moonlighting with H&B. At one point just packing orders for post was a full time job, and we’d have been lost without Ash managing our inbox. To everyone who has worked with us, told a mate about us, sent us an email, left us a review, popped in to say a socially-distanced hello, left a sweet note on your order (so many cute notes!), given Dash a pat: your support has been incredible. Thank you for sticking with us though this weird, wild year - we wouldn’t be here now without you. The love shown to small biz this year has been overwhelming, affirming and deeply meaningful to so many people and their families in the face of so much uncertainty. We’re now signing off to spend some long awaited time with family. We’re wishing you all an extra special Christmas - eat lots, love lots, be merry! And here’s cheers to a brand new year - we can't wait to see what you create in 2021 - Cassie, Peter, Hannah & Dash

03.01.2022 It's really tough times out there right now and we're hoping everyone is hanging in there - especially the self employed, the small business owners, the freelancers, and those in the casual workforce. We see you. It's been a tough two weeks in the studio, we'll admit. Things feel pretty scary. So we were really pleased when Isaebella contacted us to be a part of a new initiative to help support so many of the artists whose livelihoods have already been affected by the effect...s of COVID-19 on our creative community. Cream Town is a place for artists to sell their work online, creating a new revenue stream for them. By purchasing a print, you'll be supporting 3 local initiatives - the artist, Cream Town (so their admin costs are covered and they can keep running this show for a while yet!) and us at Hound & Bone Studio, because we'll be printing all work sold through CT. There is also the option to donate in addition to your print cost, in which case the donation will be split evenly between all artists involved. Pretty nifty! We hope you'll have a look (go on! you can even do it from the comfort of your own couch). We also hope you're all keeping safe and well - and are staying indoors! <3 https://www.isaebella.com/creamtown

01.01.2022 Further information on COVID-19 related changes to service at H&B: - Order collections are still available (by appointment, as usual), however for everyone's health and safety we ask that your visit is kept as brief as possible, and that you please don't bring anyone to the studio with you. We love meeting new people, but for now it's safest that as few people visit the studio as possible. - We are not taking consultation bookings until further notice. We politely ask that yo...u don't turn up to the studio for any reason other than to collect your order. Right now, it's much safer to stay at home. We can always arrange a phone consult with you if you have questions! - Scanning services are temporarily unavailable. This includes both raw scanning and full service art reproductions. If you have art reproductions underway with us already, don't worry - we are continuing to work on existing jobs through to completion. - Free postage is available for people currently residing in locked-down suburbs. We will continue to review the postcode list as things develop over the next little while. - We are regularly sanitising all contact points, practising social distancing and wearing PPE and gloves (standard practice for print handling at all times, not just now!) We are fortunate to live and work in the same building meaning we have no commute and can isolate while (safely) continuing to work. If you have questions concerning our safety measures or how they might affect your order, please don't hesitate to contact us: [email protected] Stay safe and take care!
