25.01.2022 I’ve been working on a handful of projects through lockdown. Each one has helped keep me sane and creative. My good friend @lazer_fist introduced me to Neil Forsyth mid Stage-4 to create a board for MOSS Foundation’s annual Auction. After a few different design concepts I settled on this simple biscuit-router cut circle with a glow stone embedded in the centre. 23.01.2022 A couple of weeks ago The Australian Ballet's digital season featured a collaboration between Bangarra Dance Theatre and The Australian Ballet. I held my breath through the stillness and beauty in the opening moments of Warumuk - in the dark night. The lighting, imagery, costumes and overall styling by Stephen Page were absolutely stunning. 16.01.2022 I never thought I would bring up my kid in a gender specific way. I’ll buy unisex I said! It’ll be easy I thought! But it’s absolutely not. For a little boy obsessed with the colour purple for well over a year, it’s impossible to find anything at the shops for boys in this colour. If something is purple, it is undeniably aimed at ‘girls’ with touches of pink, sequins, glitter or rainbow unicorn heads with cutesy eyelashes. ‘Boys’ products have dark blue with yellow... lightening bolts, cobalt blue with green cars, red with orange robots. This goes for clothing, toys, lunchboxes, water bottles, linen and bikes at all major stores. It is infuriating! Even his fav cartoons will have a group of boy characters and 1-2 girls. Those girl characters will be distinctly either purple or pink (Bluey and Bingo not included). To add to this, almost every female character I can think of has a tiny eyeliner flick on their eyes. Which makes no sense whatsoever because Archer and most little kids have killer eyelashes, lashes I could only dream of!!! Little kids don’t wear eyeliner, adults do. So why are we doing this to our kids?! We’re the adults. We make these choices. We fill our stores with this product... and have no choice but to consume it. And consume it, we do. For the last 12 years I’ve heard this same mantra repeated for girls clothing ‘purple doesn’t sell’. So instead we stock pink and it sells out in weeks. The company makes money, the customers are happy, and the kids are wearing pink. Because we all collectively decided upon it. 11.01.2022 I understand I will never understand. However, I STAND. I have always believed I had a kind heart, but I have been blind, and for this I am eternally sorry. It’s not enough to consider myself a good person. The only path forward is to actively educate myself and acknowledge injustice. I am searching for answers while forging a new pathway forward for myself and my son. For many years I have avoided sharing my personal views on social media, keeping what I learn to m...yself. I especially don’t want to be seen saying the wrong thing, or participating in performative support, so I often shy away from the spotlight. However I now know that white fragility and silence only helps to maintain the systemic racism within our society. Im terrified to bare my heart, yet here I stand. For many years I thought things were ‘getting better’. A completely privileged assumption based on every step throughout my childhood, adolescence and early adulthood to bring me to this place right now. How I could have believed this lie while Adam Goodes’ career was booed off the field I honestly don’t know. I stand here with an education, a career, a healthy little boy and the knowledge that anything I desire I can achieve. This is a thinly veiled concept that my life is something that I’ve worked for and I’ve strived for. But I didn’t have to work hard to overcome adversity. I didn’t choose to rise above the rest only to wonder what it would take to lose it all. My silence has been an abomination. I have watched on with little regard for others hoping that ‘everything will be ok’, ‘it will sort itself out’. A completely ridiculous mentality. And yes. Privilege. The sick feeling I’ve been battling since the beginning of this month is a joke compared with the fight of our Aboriginal and Torre Strait Islander people throughout the last 200 years. 09.01.2022 I once awoke in a wild storm. I listened to the howl above. And tried to bury myself deeper under the covers. I couldn’t fall back to sleep. Finally, I was awake.... At first thrown by shock and disbelief. Denial. Raw sadness. Followed by pure white-hot anger. One day those embers may slowly settle back to kindness. But not until the work is done. 09.01.2022 Most things I draw I like to give myself three sessions. 1. The first is a basic graphite sketch and helps set up the placement. 2. The second will start blocking in tonal values and adding extra details I missed in the first round. 3. The third will work with translucent layers of colour, either with copics, Ironlak Strikers or airbrush for larger pieces.... It’s the last sessions that will bring all that hard work together. Those translucent layers work to ‘knock back’ sections and pull others forward. It’s where the magic starts to unfold! For this eye I thought I was finished after 3 sessions, however this morning I spent some more time pulling it all together. I never felt the Iris was rounded enough, and I wanted to soften the edge of the iris to a blended milky white. I don’t have time to spend hours on a piece, so I try to work smarter, not harder to give myself the effect I’m looking for. I almost always leave a section unfinished. It helps me see how far the piece has come. In this case I left the right side eyelashes unfinished. Not my generation and not my ancestors, however connected to my heart and through my blood for 65,000 years plus. Long lost sisters and brothers across the broken, shifting continents. We are all one, but we have not had the same experience walking upon this planet. A planet controlled by power and greed that has rewarded the majority to keep silent while minorities fight for justice. Search for answers beyond a school textbook that was written, selected and promoted by the very people that control the past to project their own view into the future. It’s impossible to sleep while the storm is raging. A storm that began at the beginning of deep time, and will continue well after the last human takes a breath upon this planet. My entire world view was flipped upside down on the 2nd of June 2020. Since posting a black square to Instagram in a show of solidarity, I started to realise it was for a cause I had not yet begun to understand. Our modern day poet, Stan Grant’s words have been swimming through the universe to place themselves amongst the thoughts in my head.
