10.01.2022 Lilly Pillies (Syzygium australe) are a great looking, popular, native shrub which are very useful as a hedge or a screening plant due its dense foliage. But there are draw backs as a few nasty insects are attracted to them. Keep an eye on your Lilly Pilly shrubs as the weather warms up. Psyllids are a small insect that attach themselves to the underside of new growth. They cause bumps on the leaves and ultimately stop the shrubs from growing. The best ecological way to cont...rol these pests is to apply a white oil solution to the underside of the leaves. This will coat the Psyllids with oil and they will be suffocated. You can check if it works by looking under the leaves, after a few days dead Psyllids will fall out of their holes. Check on your Lilly Pillies once every few weeks and respray as necessary. For a longer acting solution apply a Systemic insecticide to the whole shrub. Follow the product directions for your situation. Note: Lilly Pilly 'Cascade' does not have any serious insect problems apart from occasional scale or Mealy Bug on the stems. This can also be treated with white oil or a systemic insecticide.

05.01.2022 Cycad Attack! - Are the new shoots on your Cycads getting shredded? There is a good chance you have fallen victim to Blue Cycad Butterfly Larvae. If you can see small butterflies with a blue ting stalking your Cycads you need to act. They will be laying tiny cream coloured eggs on the new shoots of your Cycads that will hatch into larvae. These larvae will shred the new growth, leaving brown sticks. A systemic insecticide will need to be applied to the plants every 3-4 weeks from when new shoots start to appear in the centre of the fronds. Keep this up for 2-3 months. Follow the directions on the pack or talk to your Horticulturist.
