Beware of phone and internet scams impersonating Home Affairs We are aware of a current scam where people are receiving a phone call with an automated voice claiming to be from the Department of Home Affairs. The voice tells them that 'a warrant is out for their arrest.' This is a scam. We have referred this scam to relevant agencies. What you should do: Hang up and report the call to ACCC Scamwatch. You should never give out personal details to a scammer. In the first 6 months of 2020 Scamwatch received 2,016 reports involving Department of Home Affairs impersonations with losses over $99,000. Protect yourself from scammers: Make sure you always check that any government website link contains ‘.gov.au’ at the end. You should only provide financial and identity information such as passport details on secure websites. Find out more about how to protect your personal information online.
