24.01.2022 Is my skin dehydrated or is it dry? This is a commonly asked question here @sarahouseofsamara so just to clarify what the difference is. Dehydrated skin is a condition and is a lack of water in the skin. It can affect ALL skin types even oily skin. Many factors can influence dehydration such as diet, caffeine & the environment which result in a lack of water within the skin. Dry skin is a skin type and demonstrates a lack of oil in the skin. Less oil means that the skin is... without lipids which are needed to lock in moisture for a healthy skin barrier. To assist with dehydrated skin try upping your water intake, using a gentle exfoliant, serum, hyaluronic acid and spf to protect your skin. For dry skin you need to boost your intake of antioxidants & essential fatty acids such as Omega 3 & Omega 6. I hope this helps to clarify some of the questions that I’ve received this week? With the inability to get away and see family and friends over the Christmas period I understand that many of you will have had to make changes to your travel plans. In regards to COVID safety I have been wearing a mask since March so this has been part of the uniform for some time @sarahouseofsamara . The Service NSW QR check in code has been active since June and is now a compulsory requirement along with masks for all clients entering the salon. 10.01.2022 Ease into your weekend with some gluten free banana & blueberry pancakes! Blueberries are a great antioxidant & help to protect them skin from free radical damage. 3 bananas mashed. 6 eggs lightly beaten 1/2 cup of blueberries 1/2 tsp of ground cinnamon... 2 tsp coconut oil for frying 2 tbsp of plain yoghurt (for topping) Mix together mashed banana, lightly beaten eggs, coconut, cinnamon & most of the blueberries (save some for serving) in a bowl. The mixture is a it bit runnier than a normal pancake mix, Heat the coconut oil in a non-stick frypan Tull bubbling then turn down to medium. Add a large table spoon of the batter to the pan for each hotcake. Smaller than a pancake but larger than a pikelet. Cook for 2-3 mins until they are reasonably set. Flip they are a little tricky but if they are set enough it’s not that difficult. Cook the other side 1-2 mins until golden brown. 03.01.2022 It was a perfect morning at Long Reef Lagoon for our first clean up of 2021. On first inspection it didn’t appear that there was going to be a lot of rubbish but unfortunately we did find quite a lot of smaller pieces. This included 31 cigarette butts, 20 straws/Lollipop sticks, 43 pieces of plastic packaging, 59 pieces of polystyrene and 98 bits of small micro plastic! A grand total of 323 pieces. This is a big increase since our last clean up in December. 02.01.2022 It is estimated that approximately 129 billion face masks are used globally in a month. These statistics are just mind boggling. If your occupation allows & you haven’t done so already then try switching to a fabric face mask . In order to promote optimum skin health it is advisable to purchase a couple as they will require daily washing to maintain good skin health. As the mask works as an occlusion over the skin, moisture content in the skin will increase. This can lead to... break outs, irritation and inflammation. The best solution is to try and use products that are gentle on the skin and will help to strengthen the skin barrier. Avoid harsh products that may over strip the skin such as AHA’s and scrubs. Select a moisturiser that contains Ceramides & Niacinamide which will support your skin barrier function. 01.01.2022 This is becoming a regular theme on a Sunday beach clean. Lots of rain and lots of washed in rubbish. Only a short clean was possible today due to the deluge but we did manage to retrieve 286 items in 30 minutes with just the 2 of us it was literally flowing from the lagoon at our . The photos show just a small sample that we collected including 74 items of plastic packaging, 40 pieces of hard plastic, 15 cigarette buts & 43 pieces of polystyrene. Plastic doesn’t biodegrad...e unfortunately it just breaks down into smaller & smaller pieces before entering our food chain. 01.01.2022 This weekend is World Clean Up day. It’s time to take action and clean up your local environment whether it’s your local beach, park or Bush land everyone can be involved. This footage was taken at Dee Why beach a few weeks ago and whilst most of this has been removed. There’s still some work to be done as these pieces of micro plastics are so small and are the perfect size for wildlife and marine life to ingest. There was dolphins a few hundred meters up the beach when this was taken. Sunday @ 9.00 Long Reef will be call to action day for @sarahouseofsamara due to my salon commitments. 01.01.2022 Last week I spoke about face masks and this week I’m looking at another form of PPE which is disposable gloves. Like face masks the stats for disposable gloves is eye watering with an estimated 65 billion globes being used globally in just ONE month! As a skin specialist it is a requirement that I am wearing PPE as my work involves close contact. Earlier in the year I audited my business and discovered that the bulk of my waste was single use disposable items with gloves bein...g the number 1 item going to landfill. @sustainablesalonsanz suggested that the use of Showa biodegradable gloves which are a world first. Instead of taking 100+ years to break down, these gloves have EBT (an additive added to each glove). The gloves are then very attractive to microbes and are digested. They are turned into bio gases and nitrous soil. For those who prefer a diagram see next slide Whilst the ideal is not to have to use gloves at all the reality is that it’s a requirement for many occupations. 01.01.2022 The wet weather didn’t stop @sarahouseofsamara participating in Global Clean Up this morning! Participant numbers were down due to the rain, but we still managed to collect 579 pieces of rubbish. Most of which was micro plastic and once again small pieces and beads of polystyrene which are particularly harmful to our wildlife. We also tested out our new pick up sticks which were very helpful to retrieve small pieces of plastic from the lagoon!
