21.01.2022 This is a summary of the bit you missed (thanks to the internet drop-out): Above the midbrain is the neo-cortex or forebrain, our thinking, processing brain. Within, and going to, that area in the baby, were found only rudimentary connections. Babies were essentially operating at the mid-brain level. It was clear therefore that at birth babies had little practical working memory, could not be manipulative, but also, importantly, were unable to modulate their stress response u...Continue reading

21.01.2022 More wise words from daughter Georgy. Absolutely nails it!

21.01.2022 Exposing 'routine-based' parenting model for the outdated, unscientific, and cruel method that it is. Share this widely so nobody is fooled into thinking that it's appropriate and their baby is, as Georgy says, 'broken'.

16.01.2022 Christmas Colic time is here again! Most young babies loath Christmas. Too many turkeys (like dear old Uncle Tom), parties, noise and excitement with mothers attention sadly diverted towards feeding everyone and what to buy Aunt Susan. New babies have emerged from a calm, dark womb then at birth they are suddenly ejected into a busy world of lights, faces, and strange objects; of sounds and noise; of hunger, thirst and separation from the body they know intimately from the i...Continue reading

13.01.2022 Further to my first blog on the subject in Sept 2019....... BOYS WILL BE BOYS (2) Over the last 25 years it has been noted that the incidence of children with neuro-developmental and psychopathological issues have increased significantly, with boys dominating the numbers. 1...Continue reading

12.01.2022 Come to my first Zoom session! 11am next Wednesday 20th May 2020. We'll discuss the unsettled baby and also have a Q & A session about your particular issue! https://www.babydoc.com.au//lets-discuss-the-unsettled-ba/

11.01.2022 BOYS WILL BE BOYS When the ideas of attachment parenting were being developed in the 1960s or so, the advice was fairly gender neutral. Later however data started to accumulate that baby boys needs were different from that of girls. Not qualitatively but quantitatively. Male babies on average have greater difficulty self-regulating their emotional state and therefore have a greater reliance on emotional support. They need it both more intensely and for a longer period tha...n girls.1 In essence, mothers need to work harder with their boys than their girls.2 It seems that that boys brains develop more slowly3 , and are more vulnerable to negative outside influences, possibly as a consequence of the presence of the male hormone testosterone.4,5 So here we have a double whammy. The very babies that our culture says have to be brought up to be tough, who should man up and not show their emotions, are precisely the ones that are harmed by that attitude. If you want your boys to grow up to be brave, secure and exploratory but empathic and caring, allow them to remain babies for longer. Mothers often know this at an intuitive level but sometimes the father does not. And he really needs to know. ____________________________________________________________________________ REFS: 1) Tronick, E. (2007). The Norton series on interpersonal neurobiology. 09.01.2022 GREAT NEWS! You can no longer buy a print copy of Baby on Board (3rd Edition)! As of the beginning of June 2020 a new special 4th Edition EXPANDED BABY ON BOARD book will be available. It is special for a number of reasons.... All of the text has been reviewed and updated to represent the latest knowledge about how to interpret and respond to your babys needs. My daughter Georgina Dowden has joined me in the writing. She is qualified in nursing, midwifery, sexual health, and is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. You may know her from her popular parenting blog, which touches hearts and minds equally. In addition to revamping and rewriting the breastfeeding chapter into 21st-century practice distilled through her experience both professional and personal, she has helped me remove what she calls my old white guy stuff (I now understand that babies are birthed not delivered like pizzas). She has also added many illuminating remarks throughout the text. I have added new chapters on: o Solids and Spoon foods o Sleep, Baby, Sleep o The Pleasure of Playing with your Baby. It is now published and distributed by Booktopia Editions, both on-line and in bookshops (when they re-open..). From my website you can go directly to the book page on their site. Pre-orders taken until release 1st June. You can pre-order your copy from their website on: https://www.booktopia.com.au/baby-on-b//9781925995107.html or go to the 'shop' on my website and find the link See more

06.01.2022 JUST DON"T TELL THEM. _____________________________________________________________ I've been under a lot of pressure - well-meaning people - to get him into the cot by day but I just can't see how. It's just NOT what he wants to do right now and I am not going to enter into some power game with my little one to make him. My number 1 (2 and 3!) goal is secure attachment/happy baby/wired for empathy while his brain is forming. Gosh, there is so much pressure to do it the othe...r way! ______________________________________________________________ I have recently had yet another email conversation from a new mum talking about the pressure she gets from family and friends, to persuade her, against powerful personal feelings, to impose rigid routines on her young baby. This speaks of peoples lack of acceptance of the basic biology of babies, and their belief that babies can be spoilt, and are 'inherently selfish, manipulative and indulgent'. By now with so much more information available about the essential immaturity and vulnerability of babies, one would hope that these voices would have stilled. But they remain loud as ever, encouraged by some contemporary parenting texts mostly written by non-scientists. So friends and relations want to talk about where and how much your baby sleeps and how often you feed her at night. They want to engage in a discussion about your need to pick her up when she cries, day or night, or the observation that you allow her to fall asleep on the breast even for naps. Dont respond to their fear tactics, that you will spoil her if you dont get control now, that if she doesnt learn to self-soothe now, she never will. Or that if she is in your bed at 4 months, shell still be there at fourteen. You cant win with these beliefs. So dont let them see into your bedroom where there is no cot, just a king-sized mattress on the floor. Dont let them impose on your enjoyment of breastfeeding them to sleep. The answer is simple. Most people dont discuss their finances or sex life with their relations and friends either. Just dont tell them. https://www.book2look.com/book/VrQhNTYOUY
