24.01.2022 Today is R U OK Day. It’s a day to ask, to listen without judgement, encourage action and check in on your mates. This campaign has a simple message let’s talk. We are stronger together. ... You never know. That small conversation may save someone’s life.

24.01.2022 THANKYOU HOWLONG! We have raised over $1000 just in the car wash today. (They are still counting the other collection tins) We couldn’t do it Without your cont...inued support every year. Huge thankyou to the local Fire Brigade Members (and helpers) for their time, effort and compassion for such a worthy cause. Regardless If your contribution today was big or small - we thank you.

23.01.2022 Today the emergency services family has come together to farewell NSW RFS volunteer firefighter Samuel McPaul. Samuel died last month while fighting the Green V...alley bush fire at Jingelic. A funeral service has been held at the Holbrook Sports Stadium where Samuel has been remembered as someone who was generous, and whose kindness was infectious. Samuel’s wife Megan has been presented with a Commissioner’s Commendation for Service and a Commissioner’s Commendation for Bravery. Our thoughts are with Samuel’s family, friends and fellow brigade members.

23.01.2022 The brigades deepest condolences goes out to the families, friends and the Victoria Police. It is always terrible to hear of news like this and it is made so devastating when it is people who are going about things as usual, undertaking their jobs and serving the community. R.I.P

22.01.2022 With the official end to the quietest fire season in more than a decade, a welcome and stark contrast to last year. This season, NSW RFS members have responded ...to just over 5,500 bush and grass fires that have burnt 30,963 hectares across NSW, considerably less than the 11,400 fires and 5.5 million hectares lost last season. Thank you to our incredible members who continuously step up to help when called upon, protecting communities across the state If you do wish to burn anything, there is a requirement that you notify the RFS and your nieghbours 24 hours prior to burning. RFS can now be notified online at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify or contact the Albury Fire Control Center 0260 51 1511

19.01.2022 Hi there Unfortunately Howlong RFB have made the difficult decision to not go ahead with the Brigade’s Monster Auction this year. Being a town so close th...e border, the ever changing climate and uncertain times we all find ourselves in, we believe the best thing for everyone is to take a break this year. It is the first time in over a decade that we wont be welcoming you all to share the weekend with us with what started as a fundraiser and turned more into a community event. Stay safe everyone and we will set our sights on coming back bigger and better in 2021.

19.01.2022 Severe fire danger is forecast for Lower Central West Plains, Eastern Riverina, Southern Riverina and Northern Riverina tomorrow Saturday 28 November. A total fire ban will be in force for these areas from midnight tonight. Check and review your bush fire survival plan.

17.01.2022 Due to deteriorating weather conditions a Harvest Alert has been issued for Berrigan & Federation Council areas effective Immediately. A Total Fire Ban is current in the Eastern Riverina (Hume Shire etc)

17.01.2022 A great news story with our Commissioner talking about the season ahead, the importance of preparing. Worth the couple of minutes to watch advice from the States Top ‘Firey.’

14.01.2022 Due to escalating weather conditions permits have now been suspended. Please report all fires or smoke sightings to triple 000.

14.01.2022 Fire season comes to a close in NSW 31 March 2020 Today marks the official end to the most devastating bush fire season in the state’s history.... NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said this season had been unprecedented in terms of conditions experienced, the loss of lives and property, and the threat to communities across large parts of NSW. NSW RFS crews and other agencies have responded to more than 11,400 bush and grass fires that have burnt more than 5.5 million hectares, the equivalent of 6.2% of the state, Commissioner Fitzsimmons said. Fires this season have destroyed 2,448 homes; however, the great work of firefighters saw 14,481 homes saved. This season there were six days where areas across NSW recorded catastrophic fire weather conditions. At the height of activity, there was on average around 2,500 firefighters in the field each shift with up to 4,000 on days of increased fire danger and impact. We have seen a combined inter-agency response from NSW RFS, Fire and Rescue NSW, National Parks and Wildlife Service, Forestry Corporation NSW, NSW State Emergency Service, NSW Police, NSW Ambulance and the Australian Defence Force come together with our interstate colleagues. We must also thank the international response and assistance from Canada, the United States and New Zealand. Commissioner Fitzsimmons said that most tragically 25 lives were lost, including those of the three NSW RFS volunteers and three US aerial firefighters. Our thoughts will forever be with the families and loved ones of all those who lost their lives. "We especially pay tribute to the families of Geoffrey Keaton and Andrew O’Dwyer from the Horsley Park Brigade and Samuel McPaul from the Morven Brigade, along with US aerial firefighters Ian McBeth, Paul Hudson and Rick DeMorgan Jr. Their loss has been felt deeply and we honour the sacrifice they made to selflessly protect communities across NSW. Commissioner Fitzsimmons said all emergency services personnel, especially NSW RFS members, have given so much, spending time away from their families, jobs and loved ones. We continue to thank our members’ families, colleagues and employers for allowing our volunteers to provide such a great level of protection to the people of NSW. Time and time again, we’ve heard from affected areas how the incredible work of firefighters on the ground, backed up by the crews in the air, have helped save people and property. Commissioner Fitzsimmons has also praised the community for its response across the fire season. While we’ve seen unprecedented fire activity, we’ve also seen an unprecedented response from the community including use of our warnings products like Fires Near Me NSW, and importantly, taking decisive action based on quality media reports and the messages we’ve sent. Responding to bush fires is a team effort, and the community across NSW is an important team member. We must also be mindful of all those still enduring the very raw and difficult recovery process as a result of the fires and that efforts are sustained through this very personal challenge. While the focus now for all of us is rightly on the Coronavirus response effort, the next bush fire season will begin in only a matter of months, so keep your property prepared and have your bush fire survival plan up to date and discussed with those in your family and household.

13.01.2022 Your Crop = Your Decision In the coming week, a Harvest Safety Alert may be issued for our district due to the elevated fire weather conditions. Harvest Safety Alerts provide a signal to farmers that they should be taking extra precautions during harvesting operations to prevent the ignition and spread of fire due to the prevailing weather conditions. These alerts replace Cease Harvests that were previously issued, and the decision to issue a harvest safety alert continues to... be made locally. Harvest Safety Alerts will be promoted via local radio and the NSW RFS Website. If a Harvest Safety Alert is issued for your area you should: STOP CHECK DECIDE https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au//farm-fi/grain-harvesting-guide

12.01.2022 HARVEST ALERT 1/12/2020 Due to the increased risk of fire in the Berrigan, Federation, Greater Hume, and Albury City LGA's, the NSW RFS is requesting harvest operators immediately stop and check local weather conditions before deciding whether it is safe to continue harvesting. The NSW RFS recommends the use of the voluntary grain harvesting guide to help determine if it’s safe to harvest.

10.01.2022 With forecast hot and windy weather, the NSW RFS is urging harvest operators in the Berrigan, Federation, Greater Hume and Albury City LGA's to regularly check ...weather conditions to ensure they fall within guidelines before choosing to operate harvesters. 10.01.2022 Merry Christmas from the Howlong Brigade!

10.01.2022 It is the end of an era at the NSW Rural Fire Service today. After more than 30 years in the Service, and after more than 12 years as Commissioner, Shane Fitzsi...mmons leaves the organisation today. He's taking up a new role within NSW Government as the Commissioner of Resilience NSW and as Deputy Secretary of Emergency Management. Shane has seen us, and the community, through some of the toughest of conditions and experiences during this time. We say farewell and 'thank you'.

09.01.2022 Captain Ken McNamara alongside his crew responded to this incident with 2 appliances yesterday. Luckily no property or personnel were under threat and crews worked swiftly to extinguish the fire. Well done everyone!

06.01.2022 They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.

06.01.2022 ATTENTION, this weekend (Saturday 28th November 2020) will see high temperatures and strong gusting winds from the NW, please be vigilant and ensure you have a fire plan in place. If you see a fire call 000 immediately.

05.01.2022 A great write up from our friends at Federation Support

04.01.2022 Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Minister David Elliott confirm the commemoration of last year's extraordinary bush fire season, with 65,000 personnel being recognised with citations for their unwavering dedication and commitment to NSW. The NSW Bushfire Emergency Citation symbolises mateship, teamwork, volunteering and helping when times are tough and they are a meaningful commemoration of a bushfire season we won’t forget and a symbol of the state’s gratitude. 04.01.2022 Severe fire danger is forecast across south eastern NSW and the ACT for Saturday. Under these conditions, a number of fires will spread and may threaten propert...ies. Embers may be blown ahead of fires and could start spot fires. This map shows the potential spread of fire. The dark red areas show locations where fire may spread. If you’re in one of these areas, you may be impacted by fire. If your plan is to leave, leave early and avoid being in these areas during the heat of the day. The red dotted area shows locations which may experience embers. These may be blown from fires which are currently contained, or from fires as they spread. Watch out for spot fires and be ready to take action. If you choose to stay and are impacted by fire, you may not be able to leave. If you’re in one of these areas: - Check your bush fire survival plan. Know what you will do if the fire threatens your area. - Make final property preparations now. - Leaving early is your safest option. Don’t wait until it’s too late, as roads may be impacted. Stay up to date on bush fires in your area by checking www.rfs.nsw.gov.au, the Fires Near Me NSW app, social media and local radio. If you’re in the ACT, monitor ACT Emergency Services Agency at www.esa.act.gov.au. You can download higher resolution maps at https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au//fire-spread-prediction-for-sat

03.01.2022 A good write up from Splitters Creek Brigade. Take note of these icons as they are important to know!

02.01.2022 - The Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) comes into effect from 00:01 Sunday 1 November 2020 for the following Local Government Areas: > Albury > Greater Hume... > Federation and > Berrigan Fire Permits are required during the Bush Fire Danger period for burning activities, they are free and easy to obtain. Fire permits help ensure that fire is used safely. A permit sets out the rules around how a fire is lit and maintained, and lets firefighters know when you are conducting burning activities on your property. Additionally, fire permits are not required for fires for the purpose of heating or cooking, provided that the fire is: > in a permanently constructed fireplace > at a site surrounded by ground that is cleared of all combustible materials for a distance of at least two metres all around > completely extinguished before leaving and > you have the landowners consent. If you are in doubt about whether you require a fire permit, contact the Southern Border Team (02) 6051 1511, or if you live in an urban area contact your nearest NSW Fire and Rescue Brigade station. 02.01.2022 As of 2000hrs tonight the Green Valley Section 44 is revoked. This means the incident is no longer classed as a major incident. Over the last 3 weeks, the fire ...has devastated communities throughout the Talmalmo/Jingellic/Wantagong/Ournie/Lankeys Creek areas, destroying many properties across the area. Sadly we lost one of our brave firefighters Sam McPaul who tragically lost his life whilst undertaking fire fighting operations, and injured 4 other firefighters, who are recovering well. Communities are working through the recovery process, trying to restore normality and get back to day to day life and we encourage all those to visit the area. We are grateful and thankful for the efforts and support of all our interstate agencies who have provided so much assistance both in the IMT and on the fire ground, other NSW agencies including SES, the Office of the Sheriff, RMS and Crown Land and our local councils. Most importantly however our hard-working RFS volunteers who worked tirelessly to save lives, homes and properties in horrendous fire conditions. Without their efforts, the results could have been much worse. The support of the community both locally and across the country has been amazing and we thank you all.

01.01.2022 If there is a bush or grass fire in your area, you will find its alert level on the NSW RFS website at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au, on the radio and in the ‘Fires Near Me’ app.
