22.01.2022 Our local movie reviewer Rob's Pix has given his verdict on The Courier! See it for yourself today: http://bit.ly/HOYTSRCLI RUSSIAN AROUND Facebook’s Rob’s Pix & friends masked-up and infiltrated a busy Hoyts Redcliffe session to spy on the new Benedict Cumberbatch movie The Courier. Here’s my Facebook page review.... Based on true events and set against the backdrop of the Cold War, The Courier tells the story of ordinary British businessman, Greville Wynne, who is recruited by MI6 and the CIA to act as a courier between the West and a highly-placed Soviet source, GRU Colonel Oleg Penkovsky (effectively played by Merab Ninidze, who has great on-screen chemistry with Benedict). The actions of Wynne and Penkovsky (they smuggled literally thousands and thousands of pieces of secret intel out of Soviet Russia, based on Penkovsky’s desire to avoid a nuclear conflict) were crucial to President Kennedy’s defusing of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis - not that the public knew that at the time, except to say that the Russians ultimately backed down. The tale is one I was unfamiliar with, which only added to my enjoyment of the film, as I had no idea whether the protagonists would ultimately be caught. Cumberbatch is, of course, brilliant as Wynne. There’s no trace of his sexy Sherlock Holmes or Marvel’s Dr Strange personas; he's much more in the mould of his Oscar-nominated performance as Alan Turing in The Imitation Game here. Kudos, too, goes to Jessie Buckley who is wonderful as Wynne’s wife, Sheila, and the marvellous Rachel Brosnahan as Wynne's CIA contact, Emily. The enthralling script is from Tom O’Connor (the screenwriter of the very different The Hitman’s Bodyguard and its forthcoming sequel, The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard); steady direction is by Dominic Cooke (On Chesil Beach). Cinematography is great, and the depiction of 60's era London and Moscow feels very real. Historical footage at the film’s closing cements the imagery. A fast-paced spy thriller this is not, but I found it a suspenseful and satisfying cinema experience in the tradition of "Bridge of Spies" and "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy". 4 stars.
