22.01.2022 This weeks #CoachesIntel is from Dion Harle who led the Qld U13 Boys (Spurs Team) at The Festival of Indoor Hockey Nationals in January. Penalty corners are a vital part of our game, both in indoor and outdoor hockey. One of the issues I constantly see with young teams is they over think the situation and make penalty corners too complicated. As a coach, I believe teams should always keep our attacking penalty corners as simple as possible. Direct shots or one pass, tend to b...e the most effective. Here are two examples of the same short corner that I find very effective. The first is from our 2020 U13 Queensland Spurs team scoring against ACT and the second is from our U15 Queensland Maroon team scoring against Victoria in the Gold Medal game. This short corner requires a strong and accurate injection, followed by firm lay-off to the right post. The injector needs to make their way outside the line of the right post and in front of the defender on that post, deflecting the ball passed them and into the goal. #TeamQld

21.01.2022 #CoachesIntel is provided by Troy Rossiter (Radar) who led the Qld U21 Men at the 2020 Festival of Indoor Hockey. In the round games, WA beat QLD convincingly, then the two teams had to face off in the Semi Final. Radar and his team had to come up with a different strategy to play WA as their dominance in the game had been on show previously. In the Semi, the QLD Team played a far more aggressive Man on Man structure. This is not recommended for all teams as it can be risk...y but it was successful from the point of view that the game was far more competitive than the earlier round. It can be used to great effect against good teams who don’t expect to have this pressure placed on each player and aren’t always sure how to counter act it. The Crucial elements are all players must play the man to man role no swapping players. Staying close at all times denying a pass and press the ball carrier. It’s not sustainable for long periods as players can wear out so there are pros and cons so players must be fit and committed, being careful when to sub only when your team has the ball to ensure a smooth transition. As a coach, this was game of the tournament, key tip to all players is to watch the clock and play smart and hold possession of the ball in those crucial final seconds, take time to set up and don’t rush. The video shows the QLD Team being disciplined and patient creating doubt in the minds of the WA players and denying easy passes.

15.01.2022 In our ongoing series of Qld Coaching articles for our #CoachesIntel, Tony Mills offers his view on versatility across the Indoor Court. Hi everyone I’m Tony Mills coach of the boys U15 Queensland Marrons. In my opinion one of the biggest differences between being a good outdoor hockey player and a great indoor hockey player is having the versatility and ability to play anywhere on the court. And by this I mean not only be able to play different positions when asked to but t...o be able to change positions during a game with the flow of the game and know what you’re doing. A perfect example of this is during a right side attack when your team has possession of the ball on the left boards. Now generally you’d see the pass go to the right back and then up the boards to the right striker or maybe into the link both of whom would be marked if the opposition knew what they were doing. But if the right striker leads back into the middle of the field (link position) taking their defender with them, the link can drop out to become the back and the back can then push up into the vacant right pocket. Now we have a back hopefully running the backline or looking to take the shot, our striker should be around the dot, low and looking for a pass and the link should have moved into position to get the ball back and reset if our back who is now playing striker has no other options. A great move if it works and the Marron boys pulled it off perfectly a number of times at last year’s nationals scoring a couple of cracking goals from it but when it breaks down we now have three players out of their positions. Our back is now defending as a striker, our striker now has to control the middle of the field as the link and our link has to know exactly where to be in relation to our other back and the goalie. Why not just change back you say, in a good quick game against top opposition having just one player a metre or two out of position in defence for a moment or two and they’ll cut us to threads. Your better of waiting until there is a complete stoppage, like when you have the ball in a free hit to reset and go again. Every indoor player needs to be able to play everywhere on the field so practice and play as many positions as you can, most players naturally find a position and that’s great if you like to defend play as a back but have a go up front as often as you can. If you’re a natural striker terrific but you also need to know how to defend next to your goalie as well. Looking forward to seeing you on the court this season. Whilst we don’t have specific footage of what Millsy is talking about, we thought we would throw in the highlights package from the Gold Medal Match between Germany and Austria from the 2018 Men’s World Cup. #TeamQld https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbuzdhASOxk

10.01.2022 Our latest #CoachesIntel article is from Qld U18 Men's Indoor Coach Paul Tucker. Games are won on defence, yes you have to score to win but being organised or being able to scramble when things are disorganised can often be the difference between winning and losing. As indoor is such a fast paced game, anticipation with and without the ball are gifts that the good players have. Attached are some clips from the 2020 U18 Men’s Festival of Indoor Hockey which show how a good defence and positive goal keeping makes all the difference. Some quality and aggressive saves by our Qld keepers who were well backed up by team mates. You can’t always be perfect but you can try your best in each game and every play. Often it is the small things that make the difference, it’s the Qld way. #TeamQld.

08.01.2022 Our next #CoachesIntel article is from Rhylee Pendrigh the Qld U13 Flare Coach for 2020. Rhylee has provided a drill that is useful to both players and coaches at all levels. Indoor hockey is a fast and dynamic game which involves effectively attacking and defending as a unit. Many goals can be scored if teams can quickly transition from defence to attack to expose the opposition and create opportunities quickly. The Under 13 QLD Flare worked hard on this at Nationals in 202...0 having only 5 goals scored against and 22 goals for. This drill a simple 3v 2 drill which can be progressed, the Flare girls implemented this at the 2020 training camp to work on our attacking abilities with the sliding press, quick ball movement and our positioning after a turnover. As explained in the voice over, the drill starts with 3 consecutive passes across the back, working here on the accurate passes with good ball speed to shift the opposing press to make space up the right board. In this phase we can also work with the attackers to hold their press formation and shift quickly as a unit as the ball moves. Once the ball is shifted to the right side and played up the board the next phase becomes a 3 v 2, emphasizing to the attackers: ball speed and good leading patterns to create opportunities in the goal circle. The defenders can also be given direction in their defensive skills on body positioning and decision making in the defensive circle. The drill can be modified as the coach sees fit to allow the attackers to start in differing positions, adding the links and changing sides of play. The Flare girls enjoyed this drill and I hope you have gained some extra Indoor hockey knowledge. A Big thankyou to Matt Cook and On Target coaching for the support in the compilation of this resource. Flare and Fire Under 13 girls National championships Wollongong 2020 (Finishing 4th and 1st)
07.01.2022 Our next #CoachesIntel is from Lyn Tucker, the Open and U18 Women’s Indoor Coach for 2020. There are moments in games when your team can play conservatively in a defensive zone against the opposition, but there are also times when you want to play an upbeat, active style of defence. Attached are two clips from our winning Qld Open Women’s team at the 2015/16 Indoor Nationals and the pressure that we put on the NSW defence. It highlights that creating pressure on the oppositi...on coming out of defence can be to your advantage when you work together as a team, be patient and regain control of possession. The first clip is using a standard zone and the two strikers both key in to isolate the back defender thus creating a two on one and great pressure leading to a turnover resulting in a penalty corner. The second clip starts as an inverted zone but again applying pressure on the back two challenging them to get out their defensive area. When done well it looks effortless and brings great reward. #TeamQld

03.01.2022 This week’s #CoachesIntel is from the Qld U15 Gold Boys Coach, Mark Kroning. Mark has provided us with a different flavour and an in-depth view of the game of Indoor Hockey. As an indoor hockey player, the following points should be considered when training or playing. 1. Minimum foot movement when flicking for corners. 2. 1 touch goals.... 3. 1 touch passes. 4. No slide passes. 5. Repositioning after making a pass, to receive the ball again. 6. To develop the use of channelling and holding to control the opposition ball carrier and move them into a poor position. 7. Making sure not to expose feet and go onto reverse stick, especially in around circle. 8. Use the back drag to change direction and eliminate opponents, at speed. 9. Passing consistency to team mate forehand, timing of the pass over 25 meters, ensuring the pass hits the boards in the best position to be received by a team mate in a good position. 10. Mark in front of opposition players not behind. Out of the above points the most important is passing consistency to your team mate fore hand side. I have attached a file from Steve Willer, the Australian Indoor coach (with his permission) on this topic. https://www.dropbox.com//2020%20Australian%20Mens%20Indoor #TeamQld See more
