24.01.2022 Alan Moffat exiting Pit Corner at Symmons Plains in his Mustang, photographed in action by Denis Cooper.

24.01.2022 The great man at speed in the Chev Monza, this was quick, I recall being amazed at how quick, again a strong field including Alan Jones in the Porsche

24.01.2022 Novel to think what words may have been exchanged after this little dance.

24.01.2022 The Langdon photos continue, many thanks to Justin Young for his efforts in providing these images. Who can identify who is who, and when ??

23.01.2022 Two hard charging early models driven by two icons of Tasmanian Motorsport. Darryl Wilcox going hard at it chasing gene Cook through the old pit corner at Symmons Plains. The year is not indicated on the photo, but the HRCCT is confident our early model aficionados will quickly recall the date, time, who else was there and what happened to the cars . (D Wilcox collection)

23.01.2022 Longford 1966 Alan Hamilton steps on the soap in his Porsche 904 at Mountford Corner, Sports Car racing was very popular during this era and Longford always attracted the "cream of the cream" from the category.

22.01.2022 Longford 1967 Kevin Bartlett hustling the Brabham Climax, unbelievably that signage in the background and others like it around the track was one of the issues which bought about the decision to abandon racing at Longford.

21.01.2022 Good stuff !!...thanks to Justin Young.

21.01.2022 Baskerville 1967 Two of Tassies home built Specials going at it. Bernard Harbeck driving the K4 Special which was powered by an Austin truck motor and fitted with a huge set of SU carbys, probably the biggest that was produced at the time, the chassis was very basic to say the least but it got the job done. Following Bernard is the Triumph Hillman which was built for David Sternberg and incredibly quick in its day out performing a lot of the "proper" race cars of the day, it changed hands a few times so the driver on this day may not by correctly identified but chances are its Bruce Gowans.

20.01.2022 The Elfin marque did not wither away following the unfortunate early passing of founder Garrie Cooper. Don Elliott stepped in and purchased the company, and not being one to let the grass grown under his feet, continued with Elfin race car development and production. This is an interesting article from 1985 where then local lad (and HRCCT member) Mark McLaughlin was being supported by Don in the shiny new Elfin 852 Formula 2 car. (Don Elliott collection)

20.01.2022 A Corvette during the late 1960s at Symmons Plains. Not a racing car by the look of it. Norm Knott perhaps ??

20.01.2022 Baskerville 1970 Colin(Brickie)Noble well out of shape in his Falcon, Tony Calvert in the Mustang hoping it doesn't spin back into his path.

20.01.2022 Tasmania has some extremely keen motorsport historians none more so than our friend Rob Knott, especially when it comes the history of Longford. He and his right hand man Justin Brown worked tirelessly to bring us the Longford Motorama back in March and they have put in a tremendous effort to make it happen again so put it on your bucket list for things to do in the New Year.

20.01.2022 Longford 1967, Black Jack about to pull on his helmet, he looks a little worried about something or other, one wonders who the boy in the background might be, he would probably be about 70 these days .

19.01.2022 Longford 1966. Jackie Stewart, pictured with an icon of Tasmanian politics, the then Premier, the late Eric Reece. Without the support of the Tasmanian Government, Longford would not have been the success that it was. Many improvements just occurred, whether it be the road surface, bridge repairs, or a vast array of police who were cooperative and helped the events run smoothly. The barriers that hindered Phillip Island and Bathurst, did not exist here, but alas, Phillip Island and Bathurst survived, whereas Longford didnt. (Reg Dalwood collection)

19.01.2022 A few more from the Langdon brothers this time the tough Mustang of Ian "Pete" Geoghegan, at Longford spent a long time sideways a spectacular driver and something thats missing from racing these days.

18.01.2022 Shared from Geoff Smedley, who not only provided the photo, he was actually there. Symmons Plains opened in 1960.

18.01.2022 Lyn Archer brings the Elfin back into the Pits at Symmons Plains.

18.01.2022 The fields of sports cars were of a high quality back in the 60s here are a few classic shots entering the Viaduct section from the Langdon brothers

18.01.2022 HRCCT Committee Member Chris Gray dragged his little classic out for a run in the wild today. A very neat unit.

16.01.2022 The HRRCT Annual General Meeting is scheduled for this Sunday, the 8th November 2020 (at 11am). The venue for the AGM will be the Kingsmeadows Golf Club, Opossum Road, Kings Meadows in Launceston. All members are encouraged to attend, as are those interested in historic motorsport. Following the AGM, during which a light lunch will be provided, the next step is to visit the National Automobile Museum. If intending to attend the AGM, please comment on this post in order to confirm numbers for sufficient nibbles to be ordered.

15.01.2022 Many Tasmanians have punched above their weight on the National stage in the motorsports world. The HRCCT intend to do a weekly focus on our home grown team that have played in the big league. The first nominee for this recognition is Mark Mclaughlin. After starting his driving career in an Elfin Vee (as did many) Mark was taken under the wing of Don Elliott and emerged as the Factory Driver for the Elfin Team. Following the development of the Elfin 852, Mark was highly co...mpetitive for several seasons in AF2, never securing the title but was the bridesmaid twice. As time moved on he moved up to Formula Holden firstly in an Elfin, then a Spa. Again being highly competitive, and from memory won the first Gold Star race in these cars at Mallala. Numerous wins, but sadly no Gold Star, being bridesmaid twice yet again. Numerous other drives in attractive jiggers followed, with an involvement in motorsport right up to this day, building race engines. and still having the odd drive. The lad from Cremorne now lives with Leanne and their grown up family in Brisbane, Thanks to Bruce Smart for these 1985 AF2 Baskerville photos. See more

15.01.2022 John Bowe would like to sell his Martini Mk47 Golf group R open wheeler . A fantastic mid eighties ground effect car with great provenance in Europe and USA .He has little used it in Australia but ready to race . Same As AF2 but fuel injected . Realistically priced or would trade unusual road car . If interested phone him 0418130275 or e mail... [email protected] It would be great to see this car in Tasmania to join the growing sports and racing car community.

15.01.2022 Longford, March 1968. Graham Hill in the Lotus 49 Cosworth V8 on the pit apron during practice. Denis Cooper was in the right place at the right time to capture this fine photo, of a man who achieved a rare feat in motorsport. Aside from his 2 world championships, he also picked up wins in the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours Le mans classic..and held a mortgage for a fair while on the Monaco Grand Prix. Also responsible for bringing a son into the world who did pretty well too.,

15.01.2022 A neat clipping of Tony Edmondson and Graham Parsons at Baskerville, neatly avoiding an errant exhaust, no doubt without backing off one bit. (Don Elliott collection)

14.01.2022 This is an interesting Langdon photo, even somewhat artistic. Looking from behind the Cooper S, you can see Don Elliotts rig, which is now in the custody of Chas Kelly and comprehensively restored to the format seen here. Also clearly visible is the raised pit lane spectator viewing area that following the closure of Longford, was dismantled and re-assembled at Baskerville where it stood throughout the 1970s until its deteriorating state saw it pulled down. A couple of other cars are visible, any ideas as to whose ??

13.01.2022 The things you find....little old Launceston. The first ever 'Brabham' made. The MRD....National Automobile Museum.

13.01.2022 On Sunday 8th November, the HRCCT AGM was held at the Kingsmeadows Golf Club in Launceston. The existing committee was returned and an overview of the clubs activities and financial status was provided to the membership. Here we have a photo of the assembled faithful, with committee seated out the front, no doubt eager to get into the new year.

13.01.2022 Rodney Woolnough has provided this classic photo of Storman Norman Beechey cresting the hump at Symmons Plains approaching pit corner. This car, a booming Ford Galaxy was apparently a rare 390 cubic inch model. Norm is certainly hustling along in this photo.

12.01.2022 Some great crowd scenes and main straight scenes at Longford (Langdon family)

12.01.2022 Wow !!..click on the Youtube link, sit back and enjoy.

12.01.2022 Baskerville 1974 Trevor Fidler in the Turnham Rotary cresting the top of the hill. The car was another of Peter Turnbulls creations which he put together in his shed on Tassies North West Coast in Wynyard. Peter has always been a Sports Car man, building them and racing them and still does to this day in spite of an accident which cost him his sight in one eye, a panel beater by trade he also repaired quite a few race cars for other people.

12.01.2022 Longford 1959 Long before the invention of scanners, tuning was done by the seat of your pants and by ear, in this case it's the fabulous looking engine in the Maserati 250F that Stan Jones was driving that year, imagine the exhaust note of that rocket at full pitch !!

12.01.2022 RIP Kit Ellis. Shown here at Sandown in 2002, doing as he normally did, leading from the front.

11.01.2022 Women for Wheels. Always a great spot to grab a coffee or a sandwich, have a chat with people that did an awesome job fundraising. Who can proudly declare their race car was adorned with one of these stickers ??

11.01.2022 Longford 1965 David McKay pushing his 250LM Ferrari, Spencer Martin drove the car and what a car it was, the sound of the exhaust screaming in high pitched decibels down the Flying Mile was an experience that a lot of those who attended the meeting still talk about to this day. The car survives but lives in America, the last time it changed hands it fetched two million dollars, it would exceed that now by a substantial amount.

11.01.2022 Some photos to raise your blood pressure. Thee cars were popular in their day, and if they were to run again, would be even ore popular now.

11.01.2022 Borrowed from the MGCCT. A fine pair of photos, with the legendary Geoff Smedley piloting his MG T Type at Baskerville a few years back, with son Graham piloting his MGB V8 at Symmons Plains last weekend.

11.01.2022 The anticipation is over..Stephen Mott has published his historical research culminating in this fine publication about the Penguin Hillclimb....Compulsory reading !!!..Details as to how to obtain a copy outlined in the info Lisa has attached to the post.

10.01.2022 Greg Ellis has provided the HRCCT this vintage Baskerville grid. The photo is unattributed origin wise so apologies if we are publishing without recognition. The front row is believed to be Dave Powell Snr in the little Cooper, Ray Long in the Elfin Streamliner and Max Stephens in the Cooper Bristol. It may well be John Youl approaching from further back in the bigger Cooper.

09.01.2022 The cancellation is generally well known, but here is the information put out by Baskerville Historics confirming. The Baskerville Historics Committee do a great job putting this meeting together, and to lose a year is very unfortunate. The reasoning to why is blatantly obvious. Please everyone. Maintain social distance, wash your hands, smother any coughs/sneezes, get tested if you show even minor symptoms of a cold. Lets work together to keep this pestilence out of our State. Be a good sport and keep in touch with friends in Victoria, who are doing it pretty tough.

09.01.2022 Ellis French ...who is who here ??

09.01.2022 Some never before seen Longford photos, from a slide collection owned by Don Langdon, who has approved Justin Young to digitise them to enable you to enjoy them.

09.01.2022 A very tidy looking early model having a run at Baskerville 4th December 1966. Seeking brains trust input as to who this was. (Reg Dalwood collection)

08.01.2022 The Langdon photos continue..some Longford open wheeler classics for your perusal.(thx Justin Young)

08.01.2022 1950s Longford photos are nowhere near as common as the halcyon days of the 1960s. Keverall Thompson was clearly enamoured with Charles Buttons modified MG TF in the Longford pits in 1958, and duly, took a couple of photos.

07.01.2022 Hoping that we have someone who can value add to this marvellous photo. The text on the photo indicates Ford 10 Special, Domain Hillclimb 1961 - Keith Greuber......It is only 60 years ago so we have a pretty good chance of identifying the lads. (D Roberts collection)

06.01.2022 And they are off !!..A Reg Dalwood photo from Baskerville, taken 17th April 1966.

06.01.2022 For the info of all who desire a run at this event scheduled for this weekend. If you want to enter, you have to pre-register, which we are advised has to be done by tonight. So if you intend to be there, it is time to hustle. Full points to the Mini and MG Car Clubs, it is great to see club motorsport up and running again.

06.01.2022 Denis Cooper must have been quite taken by the big Mustang of Alan Moffat at this meeting at Symmons Plains, he took several photos of the now classic. It is astounding how many old photos are out there, and how much they are appreciated by those who share them.

06.01.2022 Tim Watts' Cooper S in the paddock at Longford 1968. Still looking nice and new, and no doubt about to have its wheels driven off !! (Tim Watts collection)

06.01.2022 John McCormack at the National Automobile Museum this afternoon explaining how the Ansett Charger came into being. A Sports Sedan he built, and excelled in.

05.01.2022 Penguin Hillclimb Ellis French shared this pic of the cars lined up waiting their turn for a run up the hill, probably 65-66ish, how many drivers can you name ?

04.01.2022 Had the pleasure and privilege of a personal viewing of a fantastic collection of memorabilia, mostly related to Longford racing. Thank you to Rob Knott for af...fording your valuable time. The 2021 Longford display will be one well worth attending. Heading to be much bigger and better than this years one, which by the way was awesome in its own right. Lots of top end attractions in the pipeline, I’m sure. See more

04.01.2022 Longford 1964. Brian Higgins preparing to take to the circuit in David Prices Climax engined Elfin Streamliner. If you get the opportunity, ask Brian what it was like to be at full noise along the flying mile and have Matich and Stillwell boom past in their big engined sporties at some 50mph faster. This was the car used as the camera car for the doco made the same weekend about the 1964 Longford meeting.

04.01.2022 Reg Dalwood got into some spectator watching at Longford in 1964. This diverse pack of enthusiasts watching cars come from the Kings Bridge direction to Pub Corner.

04.01.2022 Dave Powell Snr in his Mini at Symmons Plains in 1967. Believe this car to be a Cooper S, despite the front bumper mssing some standard S fittings (they are on the back bumper though) (Tim Watts collection)

03.01.2022 One for the Mustang fans.

03.01.2022 Terribly concerning news. The HRCCT committee and membership wish John Harvey and family all the best. Fight on mate.

03.01.2022 Brian Bowe at speed, in this fine Keverall Thompson photo from 1961 at Symmons Plains. Keverall made detailed notes on many of the photos he took, which are of great use when viewed many years later.

02.01.2022 Longford 1967. Peter(Skinny)Manton lined up with others for scrutineering, who among you can name the scrutineer in the foreground ?

02.01.2022 A V8 super car from another era.

02.01.2022 Quentin Brown, at speed along the Pit Straight at Longford in March 1967 in the Ventura Ford. Have we anyone in the brains trust that can provide some history on this car, and what became of it ?? (Tim Watts collection)

01.01.2022 The contribution Don Elliott has made to Tasmanian Motorsport is not widely known today. Throughout the period from the 1950s to the 1980s, Don sank enormous resources and mentored such luminaries as Robin Pare, Tony Edmondson and Mark Mclaughlin throughout their racing careers. To recognise his contribution, the HRCCT awarded Don a presentation celebrating his contribution to the Elfin marque last year, during the 60 years of Elfin festivities.

01.01.2022 Can our early model viewers identify who and when here ??

01.01.2022 Credit where credits due. The HRCCT have used this photo many times, on posters for events and in general marketing for functions. The photo was taken by a young Denis Cooper who found himself in the right place at the right time at Symmons Plains to score this photo. All the cars/drivers in the photo are well documented so identifying them is left to those who view this humble page. Thankyou to Denis Cooper for providing his images, from 50 plus years ago for you to enjoy.
