19.01.2022 Big losses cause big damage to investment returns. Lots of funds reporting being down -35% + in March (some near -50% year to date one even over -70%! Even a market ‘neutral’ fund that benchmarks against cash is -20%) In investing the cost of a loss is asymmetrical compared to a gain. ... Funds that are down 40% for the year now require a 67% return to recover and that fund that is down over 70% as they say in those Mafia movies ‘forget about it’! Other funds I saw preaching their returns of over 40% last year. However being up 40% only requires a 29% loss to be back to zero. To be up 40% requires you to be heavily invested in high beta stocks. With no effective risk control that will bite you on the way down. Which is why it is so important to understand ‘how’ a manager generates returns and protects tail risk. Let me add it’s not because they buy ‘value’ stocks or ‘growth’ or ‘momentum’ or any other methodology you can think off. Successful investment is all about risk control. Effective risk control is about understanding that there is no harm in being wrong. Indeed that is part of the game. The harm comes from staying wrong. A mantra I think about often ‘just because it hasn’t happened doesn’t mean it can’t’. #investment #wealthmanagement #stockmarket
