25.01.2022 Beaumont Street, Hamilton (Newcastle) this morning while waiting for the car to be serviced. Pen & wash on 5x7 Stonehenge vellum watercolour paper.
23.01.2022 A quick sketch of the building on the corner of Spofforth & Reginald Streets in Cremorne today while waiting for others from the plein air painting group to join me at the cafe on the ground floor. They do a good coffee! And if you want to see great graphic art of the parapets of Sydney, see Andrew Burns' FB page https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=719463342
21.01.2022 This afternoon I had a lovely catch up with a good art friend in the café at the Edogawa Memorial Gardens at Gosford, then did a sketch. The hardest thing was choosing a subject as the were so many delights! I had to include some irises though as my partner and I had seen the Van Gogh Live experience yesterday
17.01.2022 And here’s a young group enjoying the plane tree ambiance, also using a 2B Wolf’s Carbon pencil.
14.01.2022 I love the large English plane trees around Chatswood and Lane Cove. It’s so hard to capture their leaves on-mass in a painting, so thought a charcoal pencil sketch would be easier. The leaves are still growing and expanding their pointy tips, framing the blue sky or building facades. This was sketched with a 2B Wolf’s Carbon pencil.
14.01.2022 Work in progress at Berrys Island (Wollstonecraft, Sydney Harbour) after 3hours of work this morning. I’ll try to keep a lot of this under painting next week when we come back for a second session (12x16 oil on canvas). As you can see, it’s all about the beautiful wiggly tree silhouettes against the glowing turquoise water.
13.01.2022 I just love the over-arching trees along Victoria Ave, Chatswood, so had a go at capturing the early evening light this afternoon in gouache on black A5 size paper.
13.01.2022 Australian Society of Marine Artists National Exhibition I'm very happy to have three of my plein air paintings in this exhibition with so many great works by members of the Society. One was done at Chowder Bay in sunny conditions, one was painted during the rain on the deck of the James Craig in Williamstown this March with water dripping through holes in the awning onto my palette (lucky it was oils and not watercolour!) and the third was painted from my balcony on the Cele...brity Solstice as we passed down the coast of Fiordland after visiting Milford Sound. So please come along and see the great variety of works from contemporary to traditional. 07.01.2022 I finished tweaking this plein air painting today just in time to include it in the landscapes that I’m submitting for the Royal Art Society Diploma on Monday. The tower is the campanile of Augustine’s Catholic Church in Balmain from Ballast Point Park (Sydney). I wanted an Italian feel given the church and the style of the foreshore path, so turned up the turquoise in the harbour. It's 10x14" oil on canvas.
06.01.2022 I had another go at sketching Ricky this week, again in charcoal pencil, but I laid a variegated watercolour wash first and let it dry. I need to use some pastel to narrow his neck a little I see now.
04.01.2022 Woohoo! opening night for the 2020 Student Exhibition tonight! I've shamelessly put together this flyer to distribute along the street where I painted this one and which is one of those that is on display
04.01.2022 After completing the paper work for my entries in the Royal Art Society Student Exhibition and diploma assessment, I had about 45 minutes to do a quick A4 charcoal sketch of Ricky. I reckon he has elements of Errol Flynn in his fine features!
01.01.2022 I’m grateful to the buyer who connected with my painting of the Musée d’Orsay at our very successful Newcastle Art Prize exhibition. We sold some 30 paintings from about 200 on display, which is a great result. We were thrilled that we could hold the event despite the pandemic, and thank our generous sponsors and our hosts, the Adamstown Uniting Church.
