21.01.2022 Redfords Stolen Mob Oil on Board Size:90 x 135 cm For anyone who does not know the story, Harry Redford was a stockman and cattle thief. ... In 1870 he was responsible for stealing a mob of about 1,000 cattle from Bowen Downs Station near Longreach before taking them through the Channel Country and across the Strzelecki Desert to South Australia. He eventually sold the mob at Blanchewater Station near Marree. He was apprehended for the crime in 1872. His narrative paintings have kept alive a wonderful, robust old Australian way of rural life. Sawrey knew it well, for he too was a rustic. He was an old stockman and he even founded the Stockman’s Hall of Fame. His paintings convey good spirit and lots of fun. He had a particular fondness for this small town, Kogan, on the Darling Downs. In this depiction, the mistress of the pub clearly is singing along to the music. We may only see the backs of most of the blokes but they are clearly of ample girth. Beer is no stranger to their diet. Sawrey had a fairly tough life working as a teen in outback Queensland to support his family during the Depression. He was a shearer and drover who taught himself to paint by campfire light and thus record the world around him. In the early 1960s he was able to go to Brisbane and work full time as an artist. He became one of the country’s respected exponents of horse painting and indeed, one of Australia’s most beloved painters. As the years roll on, this wonderful larrikin Australian and his quintessentially Aussie art have become hotter and hotter property among collectors.
