23.01.2022 Congratulations to Janet Laurence who has been announced as the recipient of the 2020 Australian Antarctic Arts Fellowship ANAT. Janet will spend time at Australia’s Casey research station to develop an immersive installation. The proposed installation will be based on extensive on-site research, including photographs, video works, drawings, watercolours, and collected writings on the Antarctic landscape and Casey station. My aim for the project is to bring back a captivati...ng experience of Antarctica’s preciousness and power to those that have never been, said Ms Laurence. I have expectations, and yet I know that the actual experience of Antarctica will open up unknown and far-reaching possibilities. The Australian Antarctic Arts Fellowship has been running since 1984 and is supported by the Australian Antarctic Division with additional support provided by ANAT since 2017.

22.01.2022 EXHIBITIONS ONLINE! Whilst our gallery spaces are physically closed, you can access Bridie Gillman's exhibition ‘The space between walls’ online! My practice is informed by ideas of place, and the ways in which experiences and memories shape our perspective of a site. Everyday observations that could be easily overlooked or forgotten are remembered and expressed in paint using colour and abstract gestures. This process of responding to past experiences from the context of my studio environment offers me different ways of connecting to a place when I am physically no longer there. Memories of a place often shift over time, with details fading and colours changing. My practice welcome’s the distortion that occurs in the process of remembering.

12.01.2022 STOREROOM GEM Sally Bourke ‘The Dance’, 2019, from ‘The Quick Brown Fox’ oil and acrylic on canvas mounted on wood panel in found frame 116 x 84 cm... Of the exhibition Bourke states: Travelling in remote areas as a child taught me to look carefully. The places I went felt isolating and, at times, dangerous. I used to tag along on hunting trips with my dad in order to be closer to him. Experiences in the Australian bush had a profound effect on my visual language and mark-making. The landscape in Western NSW is brutal and beautiful, soaked in deep human cultures that are precariously perched on top, at times not understanding the depth of what they are in. I wanted to be in my dad’s company, but I knew the deal: It meant being captive to the environment, while simultaneously up against death. It’s one of the places that keeps drawing me back, to blind faith, and the human condition the dark bargain of intimacy. The portraits are different versions of the same protagonist. The huntress and her counterparts, a domestic interior, a room of one’s own. Featuring the gems from the Hugo Michell Gallery storeroom weekly! See more

08.01.2022 ONLINE SHOP FEATURE Narelle Autio's 'Place In Between' publication has been produced with London publishing house Stanley Barker. Grab yourself a copy prior to the opening of the exhibition 'Place In Between: The Changelings' this Thursday!... "The call of the ocean has long been a focus of Narelle Autio’s work. Spending her childhood growing up in sun-soaked Australia she has had a lifetime relationship with the beach and is fascinated by the need for many of us to return to water. A primeval need connecting us to our ancient ancestors, pulling us back to where we came. The images dive into our collective memories and speak too many of their own personal experiences. Cinematic in nature and using the play of light and colour familiar to all her work, she captures the complex relationship and drama of our love for the sea and our willingness to risk our lives to enjoy it."

04.01.2022 Sera Waters’ touring solo-exhibition ‘Domestic Arts’ launches at Fabrik Arts & Heritage in Lobethal this Sunday! This exhibition subverts and unravels the baggage-laden yet wondrous category of making once labelled ‘domestic arts’ (often a.k.a. ‘women’s work’). Perceived regularly as mundane or sentimental, home-making expressions are reworked in Domestic Arts to show not only the knotty tangles hiding within otherwise innocuous home-craft, but also that these make-do method...s are rich repositories of passed along knowledge. In Australia, the domestic arts have been central to settler colonial home-making. Domestic Arts presents a re-creation of a home; one that celebrates and critiques the tradition of women world-making using the material stuff around them, and one that questions the ongoing and problematic traditions of colonial settling. Using embroidery and home-craft methods, Domestic Arts leaps across generations of local and national historical happenings to create contemporary portals onto the past’s legacies, ever present today. 'Domestic Arts' runs 26 September 1 November 2020. See more
