24.01.2022 I think we can agree, it has been a real time. Everything has felt heightened. We have been living on High Alert Ave in Ready To Pivot Town for some weeks now. And then, Easter, one of the most intense times of year for any bakery was at our doorstep too. So we ran. If youve been here on any day recently you have seen us running. Seven days a week we ran to make sure we stayed out in front of changes, ahead of forecasted downturns in sales, on top of what our community neede...d and all the while hoping it would be enough. There has been very little sleep and a lot of building the plane underneath us as we fly. All of this so that the team you know and love as the Hugs fam could stay intact and so that we would still be here to serve you, our community, well after the crisis had passed. Its not over yet but I have a good news update. We are all still here. A little worse for wear, in desperate need of a real break that will have to wait, but the whole crew is still here. And that is thanks to your support. Not just by buying your coffee and pastries here but through your acts of kindness- words of encouragement and gratitude, your grace when things didnt go quite right, generous gifts of morale lifting treats. There just arent enough words to express how much this has meant to us. Thank you feels far from adequate. So what we will do is keep running. We will continue to assemble the vision around us as we try to figure out the difference between flying and falling forward, knowing now with certainty that it is appreciated and that it is worth pushing through the hard days, the fears and the tears. Mondays are like this, Wednesdays are like that and weekends will start here, lift to approximately there *slaps graph on easel with pointer* and then finish up here. But no more. Like so many of the usual rules, all of that has long since flown out the window. Which, turns out, is a-okay because you all con...tinue to go with the flow right along with us. Your kindness, patience and appreciation has been next level since this all began. And it hasnt wavered. Not for a second. So please know, these wild sell out weekends, your commitment to making sure we keep going, we could not be more grateful. 08.01.2022 This is my grandfather’s desk. As it was left. We are a family business and this means a lot of things. ... It means on any given day you might see me, Emily, making croissants in the kitchen, while my sister, Esther, takes your order and our brother, Elliott, packs it for you. You might even spot our dad, Paul, early morning, in the VIP section, having his coffee and talking shop before he heads into his real job. And if you’ve been with us since early days you will know and love our Mum, Bron. If you are observant and have been here on the right day at the right time, you have spotted her, back again after leaving to start her own venture, moonlighting as my extra pair of hands, helping me to bridge the gap between what I am accomplishing and what I need to be getting done in the quickly changing business climate we all now exist in. Having a family business means there is always someone to call on in times of need. Because we all care about it so much. Hugs has been built in the extra, unseen hours, the late nights and early mornings, the sacrificed special events and forfeited social lives. It also means, in times of great sadness within the family that we ask a lot of our staff who, though not related, are in every other important way our family. Yesterday, my Mum lost her dad. Esther, Elliott and I lost our Grandad. It has been long, years long, and preparations were in place but in the end it was quick. Not unexpected but it still felt sudden and unfair and devastating. He is dearly loved and will be sorely missed. Our hearts are broken right now. Our family business will be touched by this sadness. We will leave everything in the hands of our capable staff today to take time away to be together and grieve. Today and the next little while, we ask for your continued kindness, your extra patience toward Lucy, Miyuki, Sharron and Daniela as they pick up the load we need to put down and toward us as we come back to work and endeavour to keep moving forward while mourning our loss. 05.01.2022 Feeling helpless against the enormity of the issues in the world at the moment can be overwhelming. If you are looking for a way to help, we are working on a couple of things you might want to get involved in. We will set up in our system Prepay to Say Thanks, You Guys and Prepay to Feed a Fam in Need options that will allow you to contribute an amount of your choice toward one of these two projects. The first will be to fund care packages that we will drop to workplaces,... healthcare related and otherwise, as we have received some great feedback on other necessary services doing it tough. The goal of this is to show our appreciation and do our small part in helping them to keep going. It will also keep us ticking along and the crew here employed. Morale will be difficult for months yet so these acts of kindness will only become more necessary. The second will be to ensure that families in need in our community (and beyond) are able to stock their pantries. This may be in the wake of job loss due to businesses closing or downsizing, or necessarily now being at home with the kids so no longer being able to work. How much the government stimulus will help remains to be seen and its not here yet. Meanwhile, together, we might be able to bridge a gap for some families. With your help we will provide staples at cost to households in need. If you have interest in getting involved in either of these projects, keep your eyes open for more details to come, or DM us so we can register your interest and get in touch directly. The dawn service and commemorative events you have been a part of in previous years, and that volunteers in the community spend many months preparing (looking at you Aunty Viv, love you and all you do for your local veteran community), cant go ahead this year. Its very sad for many, another thing we cant do to connect in the usual way. We want to serve you the best way we can and we are asking what are your ANZAC Day plans this year to help us do our best by you. We will be here serving coffee and pastries on the day.
