21.01.2022 The sole point of offshore detention is cruelty - it is a system that relies on devising conditions that are worse than the harm that refugees are fleeing. The Australian Government's heartless policy is nothing to emulate.

21.01.2022 Mistreatment, cover-ups and the alleged murder of 39 Afghan civilians and prisoners. The findings of the Brereton report are a shocking and long overdue moment of accountability for the Australian SAS. The Government must now move swiftly to investigate and prosecute, as well as ensure meaningful redress for the families of the victims.

20.01.2022 Australia is in the midst of a mass imprisonment crisis. Too often, discriminatory laws and excessive police powers form a toxic combination that results in more and more women being separated from their families and funnelled into the prison system," Legal Director, Monique Hurley in The Guardian

15.01.2022 Across Australia, children as young as 10 can be arrested by police, charged with an offence, hauled before a court and locked away in a prison. Today, on World Children’s Day, we call on all states and territories to raise the age of criminal responsibility from 10 to 14. Children belong in playgrounds, not prisons. #RaiseTheAge #WorthASecondChance

15.01.2022 EVENT: Don't miss this terrific Road to Refuge program that aims to build the storytelling capacity of refugees impacted by #COVID19 - please spread the word!

13.01.2022 Today is #InternationalSafeAbortionDay. The theme is 'Self-Managed Abortion.' During the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond, we need to ensure that Australian laws promote the reproductive freedom of women and all pregnant people.

12.01.2022 Corporations shouldn’t be allowed to wreak environmental devastation on communities, but Rio Tinto did just that. It walked away from its mine in Bougainville leaving behind a billion tonnes of mine waste. Now 156 Bougainville community members are telling Rio Tinto - when you make a mess, you #CleanItUp.

10.01.2022 An important case being run by the Public Interest Advocacy Centre that highlights the excessive use of force in Australian immigration detention centres. For their client *Yasir, who has spent seven years in detention, the use of handcuffs has and continues to be intensely traumatising.

10.01.2022 Once both South Australia and Western Australia decriminalise abortion and introduce safe access zones, women across Australia will legally be able to make decisions about their own bodies and lives, free from fear and harassment. This will be historic access to a safe, legal abortion is a critical healthcare right," Senior Lawyer Monique Hurley.

09.01.2022 The Federal Court has again criticised the Morrison Government for unlawfully detaining a man in immigration detention in defiance of a Tribunal decision granting him a visa. It's a scandal that Government Ministers think they can simply ignore Court orders they don't like. No one is above the law.

09.01.2022 This week 156 Bougainville community members filed a human rights complaint against Rio Tinto over its devastating legacy of mine waste pollution on Bougainville. The company must now respond and address these urgent problems our Legal Director, Keren Adams explains to RTRFM 92.1

08.01.2022 I felt from the youngest possible age that it was unfair, intolerable really, that females were regarded as second-class citizens. Susan Ryan was a fierce advocate for women’s rights, human rights more broadly and a passionate supporter of an Australian Charter of Rights. Her voice will be missed but her legacy will be enduring.

07.01.2022 Rio Tinto needs to listen to the communities in Bougainville living with the environmental fallout from its abandoned Panguna mine. They need urgent action to address the legacy of mine waste and pollution left behind.

07.01.2022 "Decisions the Morrison Government are making now will shape our society and economy for years to come. They will determine who profits from this crisis and who is ultimately left shouldering the burden. It is clearly a time for more scrutiny. Not less," Daniel Webb, Legal Director - Human Rights Law Centre.

05.01.2022 The Human Rights Law Centre has called on the Victorian Government to amend proposed legislation to remove controversial powers to detain people based on what they might do. Governments have human rights obligations to protect life and health. These obligations must be balanced against other rights like the right not be locked up unfairly. This Bill does not strike the right balance and must be amended," said Hugh de Kretser.

02.01.2022 For far too long, women have had to run a gauntlet of abuse just to see their doctor. Important to see South Australian MPs support safe access zones and stand up for women’s rights. Safe access zones are critical to protecting women’s safety and privacy from the harm caused by anti-abortionists.
