It is so easy to blame our children for all that goes wrong in our relationship with them. It is easy and simply too delicious to ignore. Where else than with our children do we get free reign to act dictatorial, controlling and monarchical? Who else would allow us to? So if this is one of the few areas our power demon gets to live freely, why would we seek to tame it? However, when we ignore the messages for spiritual development that our children are constantly reflecting back to us, we are in effect turning down one of the most profound invitations for change. It is in the tiny, ordinary moments that we get to see many-a-thing about who we are as human beings and the ways in which we have yet to grow. 08.01.2022 Conquer Your Anxiety with Philosophy Anxiety is a future-oriented emotion. That is, when you are anxious, you are anxious about a future event. So, it might happen but it might not. So why do people experience anxiety about such future possibilities? Well, because they rate some possible outcomes as highly negative. Imbedded in such emotional reasoning is a syndrome or series of faulty thinking errors. Typically, such reasoning is only consciously thought in fleeting, el...liptical, fragments such as my life would be over. But you can easily fill in the gaps if you realise that it follows this form: If such and such possibility happens, it will lead to such and such (chain of) negative consequences, which would be awful, which I couldn’t stand. So is there anything you can do? If you push yourself to formulate the premises of your thinking, it is then possible for you to refute them with a little critical thinking, prove to yourself that they are irrational. You are likely to experience cognitive dissonance. You will intellectually appreciate how irrational you are being; but you may still be (cognitively and biologically) disposed toward worrying. At this level, you can construct a philosophical antidote. To help you to overcome irrational emotional reasoning and point you toward attaining appropriate moral virtues. In the case of anxiety, the virtue in question is courage. Courage is the golden mean between being too afraid and not afraid enough.
