19.01.2022 Australia Day has always been a controversial day. Indeed in 1938, the sesquicentenary, Aboriginals held a conference for a "Day of Mourning and Protest." Toda...y there are serious campaigns to change the date of Australia Day. With Fremantle Council holding it's celebrations two days later, after discussions with the local Aboriginal people, to much controversy. Where does Humanism stand on the issue? Julian Burnside - Public (Australian Humanist of the Year 2009) at the 2016 Australian Humanist Convention reminded us of the atrocities that have been committed against the Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander peoples. In 2015 Dr Carmen Lawrence (Australian Humanist of the Year 2015) told us of the injustices that are still being perpetrated on Aboriginal peoples in Australia. Humanism stands for justice for all peoples and the rights of all to be treated with the utmost dignity and to experience the opportunity to succeed to the best of their abilities. To determine for themselves how they will live and what they will do with their lives. Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander peoples do not yet have all of these fundamental Human Rights in Australia. Progress has been made, but we still have a long road to travel. If you'd like to help bring about a future for Australia where it truly no longer matters that your cultural or ancestral background is Aboriginal or Torres Straight Islander, then lend your support to the many worthwhile organisations that have been set up by Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islanders. Ask them what they would like you to do. In the mean time let's #changethedate! It's the least we can do.

17.01.2022 "We live in Carl Sagans universeawesomely vast, deeply humbling. Its a universe that, as Sagan reminded us again and again, isnt about us. Were a granular element. Our presence may even be ephemerala flash of luminescence in a great dark ocean. Or perhaps we are here to stay, somehow finding a way to transcend our worst instincts and ancient hatreds, and eventually become a galactic specie No one has ever explained space, in all its bewildering glory, as well as Sagan did. Hes been gone now for nearly two decades, but people old enough to remember him will easily be able to summon his voice, his fondness for the word billions and his boyish enthusiasm for understanding the universe were so lucky to live in."

12.01.2022 "Today, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has introduced legislation to hold a marriage equality plebiscite in Parliament. This plebiscite has been rejected by the people most affected by the issue; LGBTIQ+ Australians who will have to endure the campaign. A campaign that will no doubt be characterised by hateful rhetoric from bigoted religious extremists and fundamentalists. The Council of Australian Humanist Societies does not support this plebiscite."... Read more on our website: https://humanist.org.au//humanists-reject-marriage-equalit
