19.01.2022 Today marks the 75th anniversary of the end of one of the bloodiest conflicts in human history, World War II. Seemingly the lessons of past global events have not surrendered to the current rising tide of nationalism, global economic recession, and growing tensions between the US and China. History has never been a more relevant teacher. #history #WW2 #Neverforget #VictoryPacificDay

18.01.2022 #OTD in 1644 John Milton’s pamphlet Areopagitica was published. Often considered as the first impassioned plea for free speech, Milton’s Areopagitica was a protest against an order issued by Parliament that required government approval and licensing for all published books. The title is derived from the name of the location where the Athenian high court would exercise their authority and impose general censorships. Drawing heavily from Greek influences, John Milton’s pamphl...et promotes the free exchange of ideas and its role in developing a person’s morality and knowledge that were central to ancient Greek culture. Ultimately, his work on freedom of speech and the press would influence the creation of the 1st Amendment of the United States Constitution and would be a central core principal in all democracies. #FreePress #FreeSpeech #milton #literature Image courtesy of the British Library

17.01.2022 Corporate Lecture Series Profile: Prof Ken Gelder Ken Gelder is Professor of English and co-Director of the Australian Centre at the University of Melbourne. In his talk, Prof Gelder begins by identifying the frontier colonial Gothic in Australian literature, which gives expression to the experience and aftermath of violent encounters between settlers and Indigenous people in remote settlements. Colonial development later distances the Gothic from the frontier, to which it... nevertheless returns in belated and spectral ways: giving us a form of Australian literature we can identify as post- frontier colonial Gothic. Marcus Clarke is one of a number of writers who wrote convict Gothic literature in colonial Australia, in particular with the serialization of His Natural Life (18701872). Marcus Clarkes famous account of weird melancholy evokes spectral Aboriginal presences linked to the Lemurian novel in Australia, a popular version of the post-frontier Gothic. 13.01.2022 #OTD in 1963 President John F. Kennedy was assassinated while riding the presidential motorcade along Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas. The bullet that shook the world was fired by former U.S. Marine Lee Harvey Oswald from the Texas School Book Depository where he was an employee. President Kennedy along with his wife Jackie Kennedy were immediately rushed to Parkland Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead 30 minutes later. Vice-President Lydon B. Johnson was sworn in as... president soon after on Air Force One. President Kennedy’s death sent shockwaves around the world prompting the creation of the Warren Commission to investigate the assassination of President Kennedy and Oswald as many Americans were suspicious that the assassination attempt was a communist plot by the Soviet Union or Cuba. The commission concluded 10 months later that Oswald did in fact act alone in the plot. President John F. Kennedy was the fourth presidents to have been assassinated while in office and the investigations that followed his death has led to numerous conspiracy theories as to why he was assassinated. In fact in a poll conducted by FiveThirtyEight in 2017, only 33 percent of Americans believe that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. Image courtesy of the New York Times.

12.01.2022 #OTD in 1694 Francois-Marie Arouet better known as Voltaire was born in Paris, France. A writer, historian, and philosopher, Voltaire is one of the most famous figures of the Enlightenment Period for works regarding freedom of speech, religion, and the separation of church and state; All of which inspired and formed the bedrock principles that the Founding Fathers of the United States used in forming today’s modern democracy. Although unclear where he came up with his fam...ous pen name, Arouet adopted the nom de plume Voltaire in 1718 after completing his first play. Constantly living under frequent censorship by the French government at the time Voltaire’s works influenced societies promoting liberty and freedom. His works continued to produce controversy even after his death in 1778 and still influences societies today. #voltaire #france #philosophy #humanities Image: Nicolas de Largillierre, Portrait of Voltaire at the Age of Twenty-Four, oil on canvas, 1718, Bibliotheque de Geneve Musee Voltaire.

09.01.2022 #OTD in 1859 Charles Darwin publishes On the Origin of Species laying the foundation for the Theory of Evolution.
