25.01.2022 Curious about the wealth of research that occurs in the media and culture field? Take a peek at just some of the great research that UNE academics are doing in this area, and how they are exploring the 'bubbles' in our society. https://okt.to/gWwMo5
24.01.2022 I would see, growing up in western NSW, that our story wasn’t reflected that much in the literature, on TV, in famous paintings, says Dr Lorina Barker, from the Wangkumara and Muruwari people, and a UNE senior lecturer. Like: there was always the portrait of our Queen in public schools, and the Tom Roberts piece, ‘The Golden Fleece’. I’d sit in the library looking at that image and wondering why there were no Aboriginal people in there - because I grew up on what was then ...a sheep station on Muruwari Country, and my family worked on it as shearers, station hands, rouseabouts, crutchers and shearers’ cooks. Now, Dr Barker pursues her passion for stories through her research in local community and oral history, and enables it in others. I’m able to give voice to the Aboriginal spirit, stories and experience from the communities in which I work, and able to express our cultural knowledge and history in a way that is accessible to our community members and comes directly from them as well, she says. #NAIDOC2020 #ResearchUNE
20.01.2022 Sometimes a study journey can begin with grief, but that does not mean the journey must be defined by it. This is the case for UNE PhD student Vicki Antonia Oliveri. Vicki alongside her brother, was a carer for her parents during 2007-2008 the final stages of their lives. Following her loss, Vicki decided that she wished for a productive time out to reset and process her grief. After being a carer, I craved to be surrounded by the things of beauty found in the arts, sai...d Vicki. Doing a Bachelor of Arts helped achieve that and it also gave me the opportunity to see what would stir my passion. After studying her undergrad it is safe to say that Vicki’ passion was stirred by the research field of art crime. This led her from her Bachelor of Arts into an Honours research project that focused on art crime, an area that she discovered during her time studying her undergrad. 19.01.2022 Did you see this powerful image of the first Aboriginal Senator for Victoria Lidia Thorpe entering the chamber? How much do you know about the cultural weight a...nd importance of message sticks? UNE linguistic anthropologist Piers Kelly recently co-authored an article, alongside Wunyungar, on the significance of Indigenous Australian message sticks. Take a look at the full article below. "Colours such as red ochre or white pipe-clay also added meaning, and even the type of timber had significance. Along with the message, they might also tell a story of where the messenger had come from, depicting the journey as a map." Message Stick Walk Humanities at UNE https://okt.to/QlYROL

17.01.2022 The UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons will finally come into force after the 50th country (Honduras) ratified it over the weekend. The treaty will make the development, testing, stockpiling and use of nuclear weapons illegal for those countries that have signed it. Dr Gwyn McClelland, Lecturer in Japanese Studies at UNE, writes about the longterm effort to ban the bomb and particularly what it means to the survivors of the 1945 bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. #ResearchUNE

08.01.2022 When I decided to learn Indonesian several years ago, I turned to UNE. More and more Australian universities have closed their Indonesian programs, in a massive backwards step for our understanding of our region. As well as delivering UNE’s annual Earle Page Politics Lecture this week, The Hon. Chris Bowen MP, Shadow Minister for Health, was able to catch up with his Indonesian language lecturers Dr Zifirdaus Adnan and Ms Indrawati Zifirdaus, MA, and pay tribute to UNE fo...r its ongoing commitment to teaching Indonesian. The Shadow Minister graduated with a Diploma of Modern Languages (Bahasa Indonesian) from UNE in 2018. As he studied online, this was his first visit to the UNE campus. In the lecture, Mr Bowen told a capacity audience in Armidale that Australia can and must come through the crisis a stronger society, with stronger public health and more employment security. Mr Bowen said he was proud to join the list of distinguished Australians who have given the Earle Page lecture including Bob Hawke, John Howard, Julia Gillard, Tony Abbott, Anthony Albanese and Penny Wong.
08.01.2022 New research by the Centre for Rural Criminology at UNE, shows that more than 80% of farmers in NSW have reported being a victim of crime. Based on this research, Crime Stoppers and the NSW Police Force launched a state-wide crime campaign on Monday to address awareness of regional crimes, prevention measures and to increase reporting to Crime Stoppers and the police. Find more information on the Draw the line on regional crime campaign and UNE's involvement below ... Criminology at the University of New England https://okt.to/k2EyYM

07.01.2022 If you wanted an intensive art course taught by a nationally significant artist, you came to Armidale. UNE Adjunct Professor in Archaeology, Dr June Ross, was one of a few locals among many visitors to enjoy the programs offered at the UNE Summer Schools a renowned residency program hosted by UNE from the 1950s to the 1990s. A way of utilising UNE campus facilities left vacant over the summer, the arts program operated from 1959 with continuing education offerings in musi...c, visual arts and crafts, performing arts and literature with leading artists, writers and performers presenting courses on campus. It was 1974 when I attended a Summer School ‘life drawing’ with artist John Olsen, June recalls. It brought a whole cohort of people to Armidale. The Summer Schools were very well known and people came from far and wide to be part of them. Everybody was here to have a good time, and everybody did! Being an artist can sometimes be quite isolating because you work on your own, but at the Summer School we were pushed right out of our comfort zones to experiment and try new things. As part of the Summer School program, UNE would purchase works by the visiting artists for its collections. Many of these artworks purchased will be publicly displayed as part of a new ‘Summer School’ exhibition at the New England Art Museum (NERAM), opening Friday 20 November. The exhibition will feature work by Irene Amos, Suzanne Archer, George Baldessin, Sydney Ball, Estelle Cotsell, David Fairbairn, John Firth-Smith, John Olsen, Stanislaus Rapotec, Andrew Sibley and more. The exhibition will run until 31 January 2021.
