23.01.2022 WANTED: Human Books What on earth are we talking about? Think, ABC’s You Can’t Ask That? ... What: Last year, to launch Warrnambool Mental Health Week, we brought together 23 incredible human books to share their stories in a library type format, in the name of increasing tolerance and inclusivity within our community, while reducing stereotypes, discrimination and prejudices. Our human books were on hand, in a safe community setting to be ‘borrowed’ to sit in comfort with a series of individuals or small groups to share their story. Our Borrowers were curious, respectful members of our community with a desire to learn from the stories and experiences of others. In 2019 we did such a great job, we were awarded the Warrnambool Australia Day Awards Community Event of the Year! Do you have a story to tell? Would you like to be one of our Human Books for 2020? Where: The Warrnambool City Library When: October 3rd, 2020 Time: TBA approximately 4 hours Who: We are looking for books from all walks of life with diverse experiences and we are only limited by our imaginations. For example, people who have first hand experience with some of the following: homelessness; addiction; living through a natural disaster; mental illness; chronic disease; end of life; LGBTQI+; asylum seeking; emergency service work; medical specialists; astronauts; survivors of abuse you get the idea. Requirements: Ideally, our human books will be in a place where they are comfortable and able to talk openly about their experiences which may involve answering questions that others may find uncomfortable. In the same vein as You Can’t Ask That we are hoping to break down stereotypes by giving our Borrowers the opportunities to explore the stories of others by asking the questions they’ve never felt comfortable to ask before. If you would like to volunteer to be a Human Book or to find out more, please contact Jodie or Matt on our Facebook page @humanlibrary3280 or email us [email protected]
