25.01.2022 THE SATURDAY PAPER ON *HECTOR* AND A SYSTEM BUILT ON CRUELTY AND INDIFFERENCE https://www.thesaturdaypaper.com.au//this-/160043760010437 We cannot print his name. We know he has been in immigration detention for seven years. We know his weight has dropped to 45 kilograms. He could die within weeks....Continue reading
23.01.2022 Almost all of our clients have been detained for many years. For some, death becomes preferable to detention and we have recently been told that one is only weeks from death. Despite our submissions, reports from the regulators and an interim (urgent) measure from the UN Human Rights Committee, our government seems content to watch yet another detainee die. The weight loss of my client is just one of the symptoms of his illness, but the government seem determined to categorise it as a protest. This is manifestly dangerous. Alison Battisson. This is Australia #auspol

20.01.2022 Are you ready for some good news to bring the weekend in?!! Last night, the Human Rights for All team were able to celebrate as a man who fled Civil War and lost his family, was freed from detention and could reunite with his children. HURRAY! Share and celebrate! #liberty
20.01.2022 This is a very important piece. These are not administrative places of detention. They are unregulated prisons. We are running a thread on twitter on this brutal regime. We would love to hear from you
20.01.2022 For 7 years, Australians have been peacefully protesting the treatment of innocent people singled out for possibly the longest and most brutal refugee deterrence campaign in our history. They are frequently asked not to get in the way of traffic or other conveniences. When this request is refused, the political and police language is very revealing, especially over recent weeks in Brisbane. ‘Queensland’s deputy police commissioner has warned that demonstrators will feel the... full force of the law’ ‘expect decisive police action’ ‘exhausting all their resources to stop this protest going ahead’. The treatment of these men is an humanitarian crisis but people are expected to ‘find other ways of protest’, which seem to be about staying out of sight. This is Australia.

16.01.2022 IT’S NOT AMENDABLE. IT’S TRASHABLE. - Andrew Wilkie MP, 31/08/20 There are so many reasons we oppose the Prohibited Items Bill and Andrew Wilkie summed them up last night:... - It continues the practice of treating asylum seekers as criminals and the practice of treating detention centres as jails - Australia has no rights in any agreement or international law to treat asylum seekers and refugees as criminals, and to lean on policies of deterrence and punishment - We, as a signatory to the Rome Statute are committing crimes against humanity every time we detain someone indefinitely and without conviction for any offence - The changes around the margins of this bill since the 2017 version have not made it even remotely acceptable. - He asks the House and the Senate not to pass the Bill, but rather to think of fresh about humane responses to asylum seekers ‘Until the government and the opposition start to genuinely consider alternative approaches, we will continue with this immoral and illegal Policy framework based on deterrence and punishment’ https://andrewwilkie.org/andrew-speaks-in-parliament-on-th/

15.01.2022 Jacqui Lambie has asked for input on the ‘Phone Ban Bill’ and you can do it here: senatorlambie.com.au/advise_jacqui I always go through the emails to look at their reasoning. I will be in isolation for two weeks, so I’ll have a good look at it then and make phone calls. #NoPhonesNoLife... themercury.com.au/news/voters-to
14.01.2022 Our Director Principal, Alison Battisson, recently took part in this webinar hosted by End Child Detention Coalition Australia. The other two speakers featured are; Hayat Akbari, a former child detainee, who is now completing his law degree in Sydney and is the current Chair of the Youth working group at the Asia Pacific Refugee Rights Network, and; Professor David Isaacs, a paediatrician at the Children's Hospital at Westmead (CHW), Sydney, and Clinical Professor in Paediat...ric Infectious Diseases at the University of Sydney. He has worked extensively on Nauru and has first-hand knowledge of the impact of immigration detention on child health and development. David started and has been head of the Health Assessment for Refugee Kids (HARK) Refugee Clinic at CHW since 2004. This is well worth (almost) an hour of your time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MphDG4hwqXQ&t=10s See more

11.01.2022 Last year we got a call from two Saudi journalists who were detained at Villawood IDC. The men’s long-term relationship had been revealed to family and they had fled for their lives. Without phones, we could never have had the hour by hour contact that got their case resolved within weeks. We remember trying to work like this before phones were allowed in June, 2018. Getting timely instructions and providing advice was incredibly difficult and affected our ability to represe...nt our clients. In so many cases, it meant they spent longer in detention and entered the community in poor mental health. The Prohibited Items Bill may go before the Senate as early as next month. Please let your Senator know you care and please respond to Jacqui Lambie, who has the casting vote: https://www.senatorlambie.com.au/advise_jacqui #NoPhonesNoLife

09.01.2022 Moving vulnerable people away from lawyers, advocates and family members (which will worsen both physical and mental health, let alone cost many millions of dollars), all because a government doesn't like how continuing to hold them in detention centres in capital cities makes them look. https://www.sbs.com.au//there-s-more-to-the-reopening-of-c

02.01.2022 An important, clear-sighted, painful essay by Behrouz Boochani. It is Australian History and one day it will be taught to our children and grandchildren. https://t.co/ahg23qM82j ‘White Australia’ Policy Lives On in Immigrant Detention The government’s abuse of refugees in offshore facilities on Nauru and Papua New Guinea has its roots in the country’s racist, colonial history....Continue reading
