24.01.2022 "For all of that time I've known him to be someone who was, in my opinion, based on what I saw, deeply sexist and actually misogynist in his treatment of women, in the way he spoke about women," Barrister Kathleen Foley. Deeply problematic questions being raised about the chief law officer of Commonwealth.
24.01.2022 Across Australia, children as young as 10 can be arrested by police, charged with an offence, hauled before a court and locked away in a prison. Today, on World Children’s Day, we call on all states and territories to raise the age of criminal responsibility from 10 to 14. Children belong in playgrounds, not prisons. #RaiseTheAge #WorthASecondChance

21.01.2022 Hundreds of asylum seekers placed on six-month final departure bridging visas. This shows that the Government has no plan to end its failed offshore detention policy. Instead, it is going to push people into destitution and wash its hands of responsibility.

20.01.2022 Children will be facing homelessness. Mothers and fathers will be terrified, wondering how they will put food on the table. In the middle of a recession and a pandemic, this decision leaves people without any prospects for work and without any means to support themselves, David Burke on the Morrison Government's decision to push children, women and men who have suffered from offshore detention now into destitution.
20.01.2022 Our rivers are poisoned with copper, our homes get filled with dust from the tailings mounds, our kids get sick from the pollution. These are not problems we can fix with our bare hands. We urgently need Rio Tinto to do what’s right and deal with the disaster they have left behind. Incredible piece about newly appointed MP Theonila Roka Matbob, Bougainville’s fight for independence and Rio Tinto’s abandoned Panguna mine.
16.01.2022 Compulsory income quarantining intrudes upon the freedom and autonomy of individuals and families. This is the Federal Government trying to micro-manage the lives of people by denying them the freedom to make decisions about where to buy food and clothes, and the option of buying cheaper goods with cash. At its core this is a discriminatory and failed coercive policy.
15.01.2022 "Protest is an essential part of a healthy democracy and the decisions being made by governments today - including on higher education - will shape our society and economy for years to come. Governments and police have a responsibility to support peaceful protest, not violently suppress it. Democracy doesn’t stop in a pandemic," Senior Lawyer Yusur Al-Azzawi.

13.01.2022 We urgently need limits on political donations and election spends, because your ability to be heard on issues that matter shouldn’t depend on the size of your bank balance.
13.01.2022 Today marks the beginning of #NAIDOCWeek2020 The theme is #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe Always Was, Always Will Be. recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. We must always acknowledge the true history of this country.
12.01.2022 This week South Australia and Western Australia, the only two Australian states yet to modernise their abortion laws by enacting safe access zones, took crucial steps to sure up reproductive rights. Safe access zones are critical to protecting people’s safety and privacy from the harm caused by anti-abortionists.
12.01.2022 "This is a campaign to try and find a solution for families, men, women and children, who have been held in limbo for more than seven years. It's time to call game over." Great to see Craig Foster and Sonny B Williams at Parliament calling on the Federal Government accept New Zealand's offer to resettle people who have sought safety. After #7YearsTooLong it's #GameOver for Government's failed refugee policies.
12.01.2022 Come and join the Human Rights Law Centre's team. We're looking for a Media and Communications Manager! Ongoing, full-time. Applications close this Sunday 15 November. This is an incredible opportunity to have a huge impact on human rights:
11.01.2022 Journalist Dan Oakes won't be prosecuted for reporting on alleged war crimes but the laws that allow prosecutions like this still remain. The Morrison Government must act to protect press freedom and whistleblowers.
11.01.2022 We are deeply grateful for the support of Dropbox - their support helps fuel our work building a better, fairer future for everyone.
10.01.2022 Once both South Australia and Western Australia decriminalise abortion and introduce safe access zones, women across Australia will legally be able to make decisions about their own bodies and lives, free from fear and harassment. This will be historic access to a safe, legal abortion is a critical healthcare right," Senior Lawyer Monique Hurley.
09.01.2022 After almost 8 years, 1500 people who came to Australia seeking safety are still trapped in limbo here and offshore. The devastating human cost and gross abuse of power involved in the Morrison government’s refugee policies are shameful.
09.01.2022 What wrongdoing might be occurring right now that we will never know about, because those who witnessed it remain mute? writes Senior Lawyer Kieran Pender in The Age Whistleblowers perform a vital democratic function in Australia. We must hear their call, not lock them up.
08.01.2022 Mistreatment, cover-ups and the alleged murder of 39 Afghan civilians and prisoners. The findings of the Brereton report are a shocking and long overdue moment of accountability for the Australian SAS. The Government must now move swiftly to investigate and prosecute, as well as ensure meaningful redress for the families of the victims.
08.01.2022 As this challenging year draws to a close, we’re delighted to launch the Human Rights Law Centre’s Annual Report for 2020. The report outlines what we achieved together over the last 12 months to advance our vision of a fairer future. Our impact is only possible because of thousands of people like you coming together and standing up for human rights progress. Thank you so much for being part of our movement for a more just and compassionate Australia.
06.01.2022 The sole point of offshore detention is cruelty - it is a system that relies on devising conditions that are worse than the harm that refugees are fleeing. The Australian Government's heartless policy is nothing to emulate.
04.01.2022 In a democracy, we should be able to go about our lives without a bunch of government agencies secretly scooping up details of where we’ve been, who we’ve spoken to and the text messages we’ve sent, said Senior Lawyer Alice Drury. "The Morrison Government should follow the Intelligence Committee’s advice and these privacy invading laws back.
03.01.2022 An important case being run by the Public Interest Advocacy Centre that highlights the excessive use of force in Australian immigration detention centres. For their client *Yasir, who has spent seven years in detention, the use of handcuffs has and continues to be intensely traumatising.
03.01.2022 We remain devastated and angry that the two police officers who failed to properly check on our mum have been let off. No police officer has ever been held criminally responsible for an Aboriginal person’s death in custody, and our mum’s case shows why it’s wrong for police to be investigating the actions of their own colleagues. When someone dies at the hands of the police, the law should require a transparent investigation, so that there can be truth and accountability," the Day family.
03.01.2022 The Tasmanian Government is currently considering passing laws that fail to protect children from the harm of routine strip searches. The Gutwein Government shouldn’t squander this opportunity to protect children and get the law right when it comes to banning routine strip searching. Strip searches involve forcing children as young as ten to remove their clothes in front of adult prison guards and police officers. It’s invasive, dehumanising and unnecessary and strips children of their dignity," Senior Lawyer Monique Hurley.
03.01.2022 The Andrews Government has been on notice that the changes they made to bail laws have resulted in a dangerous and discriminatory bail system - in practice they have targeted Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women the most. Veronica Nelson should never have been in custody. The inquest into her death in custody continues tomorrow.
03.01.2022 EVENT: Don't miss this terrific Road to Refuge program that aims to build the storytelling capacity of refugees impacted by #COVID19 - please spread the word!
01.01.2022 Australia is in the midst of a mass imprisonment crisis. Too often, discriminatory laws and excessive police powers form a toxic combination that results in more and more women being separated from their families and funnelled into the prison system," Legal Director, Monique Hurley in The Guardian
