11.01.2022 The duck hunting season has been shortened due to dry conditions. Some want the season and practice cancelled. Others talk about the contribution hunting makes to rural economic development. Like many human-wildlife interactions, there are many different viewpoints and nuances to consider.
06.01.2022 Alpine National Park Deer Control Trial Parks Victoria is implementing a deer control trial in the Alpine National Park to investigate whether ground shooting c...an be used to mitigate deer impacts on significant environmental values and if so, what are the most efficient and effective techniques. The next volunteer operation will take place from Thursday 10th January to Sunday 13th January. In general, the operation will start in the late afternoon/early evening and continue until just after midnight. This may change depending on the results. The park will not be closed while deer control operations are being undertaken, although some localised access restrictions may be applied. Signs will be placed at major access points when operations are under way. All personnel involved will be working under the supervision of Parks Victoria staff. They will be readily identifiable and will act in accordance with all legal requirements to ensure the safe use of firearms. Parks Victoria will engage a contractor, as well as partner with the Australian Deer Association (ADA) and the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (SSAA) to deliver the control stage of the trial. The contractor and members of the ADA and SSAA have significant experience in deer hunting and will observe state and/or national codes of practice and standard operating procedures to ensure that best practices in animal welfare are observed. Please refer to the attached map and note - outside the Parks Victoria managed control operations, hunting remains prohibited on the Bogong High Plains.
06.01.2022 In Cambodia, landmines still remain after decades of war and violence. However, in an interesting interaction between humans and wildlife, specially trained rats are used to sniff out the landmines. Working with their human counterparts, these 'HeroRats' systematically work through mapped out sections of land detecting any mines. The smile on the face of this rat's (P.Derr) human colleague was great to see at the APOPO's HeroRATs centre in Siem Reap. https://www.apopo.org/en/contact-us/APOPO-Visitor-Center These rats, originally from Africa, are also used to detect tuberculosis in people. They talked more about this on ABC Australia The Science Show: https://www.abc.net.au//pouched-rats-sniff-for-la/11124508
