25.01.2022 Removing the responsible lending protections is just irresponsible #auspol #Budget2020 From Consumer Action Law Centre : Australians are already turning to high-cost loans to make ends meet and without adequate protections from predatory lenders, people will spend money repaying high-cost debts instead of paying for essentials like food & energy. #StopTheDebtTrapAlliance https://bit.ly/36E7VNr

22.01.2022 Great initiative Gateway Health Multicultural Club Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Violence is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in our world today and remains largely unreported due to the impunity, silence, stigma and shame surrounding it. As part of the 'Cultural Respectful Relationship Project' we have developed a video in 5 languages about "Healthy Relationships" which we are launching today. https://youtu.be/qRjgy1JYR3Q

16.01.2022 Victoria Police are no longer checking permits or identification at the checkpoints, however, the checkpoints remain in place and are due to be dismantled from ...tomorrow. Police remain to direct traffic through. (Edit: This came into effect from 6pm). Please drive safely in the area, follow speed zones, particularly in the wet. Police will revert to roving patrols and spot checks. Victoria’s permit system remains in place.

14.01.2022 Sole parent families are particularly hard hit by the recession and a strong social security safety net has never been more important. In NSW, more than 650,000... people were relying on the Coronavirus Supplement by June 2020. More than 290,000 children were relying on parents relying on the Coronavirus Supplement. What will happen when the Supplement cuts out altogether after 31 December? We cannot go back to $40/day. Anti-Poverty Week - 11th to 17th October 2020

14.01.2022 Consumer Action Law Centre: "At what point is it a smart idea to lend people money that they're unable to pay?" says Lauren, who got caught in a spiral or insurmountable debt. https://ab.co/3cwYqm7

13.01.2022 Tenants Victoria: The Victorian Government has announced new minimum standards for rentals that come into effect on 29 March. From that date these minimum standards will be mandatory for tenancy agreements when renters move into new places. They include basic amenities such as hot and cold water in the kitchen, bathroom and laundry and functioning ovens, stovetops and sinks in the kitchen. Renters will also, in many cases, be able to attach child safety devices and install picture hooks, replace curtains, and boost energy efficiency with new LED globes without having to ask for the landlord’s permission. And landlords cannot unreasonably refuse when tenants want to plant vegetable gardens, paint, secure gates and install security systems and flyscreens.

13.01.2022 Glad to see more progress in this #crossborder space! Congratulations to James McTavish and Luke Wilson, the two cross-border commissioners for their continual advocacy for our region.

11.01.2022 As family violence rates spike across the country due to #COVID19, we are standing with Family Violence Prevention and Legal Services in their calls for a stron...g, ambitious, numerical target to end family violence against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. In a matter of weeks, the Government will determine the final Family Violence targets - and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women deserve to have strong, numerical targets that we can use to hold governments to account. This is a critical moment to build public support and keep the focus on ending family violence against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and kids. #ClosingTheGap

11.01.2022 Thankful that Legal Aid NSW & Victoria Legal Aid have signed a MOU to streamline our funding and reporting requirements - one of the big challenges of working in a #crossborder environment! We look forward to continuing to work with both Legal Aids. Excerpt below from Legal Aid NSW's newsletter: "Legal Aid NSW and Victoria Legal Aid (VLA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for their shared commitment to coordinating community legal centre (CLC) funding in the cro...ss-border areas of Victoria and New South Wales. Legal Aid NSW and VLA both provide CLC funding to the Hume Riverina Community Legal Service. A joint service visit was held late last year to explore some of the challenges the centre faces with dual funding and reporting arrangements, which takes time and effort away from providing services to their community. Since the visit, we have worked closely with VLA to develop the MOU and a joint reporting framework that satisfies both funding bodies’ requirements and makes it easier for the Hume Riverina Community Legal Service to comply with their funding agreements. The MOU between Legal Aid NSW and VLA came into effect on 16 September 2020. Victoria Legal Aid’s Executive Director of Services and Innovation Peter Noble said, it represents a significant step forward in the joint administration of funding and I’m sure will lead to greater efficiencies and improved outcomes over time. Legal Aid NSW and VLA will regularly review the arrangement for further opportunities to create efficiencies and collaboration to support the CLC"

10.01.2022 Well our team may've all struggled to look at the camera at the same time with our eyes open ... but family violence awareness is something we all take very seriously and we are proud to support the #16days of activism and the #OrangeTheWorld campaign #standup #speakout

10.01.2022 The Government and Treasurer Josh Frydenberg are putting the interests of banks and predatory payday lenders before those of everyday Australians, as the economic fallout of COVID-19 worsens. Unaffordable credit will destroy our economy https://consumeraction.org.au/government-waters-down-payda/

07.01.2022 There has been some updates today regarding COVID-19 restrictions that come into effect for New Year's Eve as well as from11.59pm tomorrow (January 1). This inc...ludes Victoria declaring the whole of NSW as a red zone. Information for border communities is still to come with the Victorian Government saying "For those in our border communities, we understand that you need to be able to travel in between New South Wales and Victoria, and we will have a process in place to allow that to happen. Details will be confirmed shortly." We will bring you those details as they come to hand. From 5pm tonight the following restrictions will be in place in Victoria. The limit of people gathering in the home will be reduced to 15 from 30. Masks will be mandatory indoors. If you are planning to leave your home take a mask and it needs to be worn anytime you’re inside apart from when you’re eating or drinking. Anyone who has been in or visited the Blue Mountains or Wollongong regions from December 27, 2020, will have until 11.59pm tonight to enter Victoria. You must apply for a new travel permit through Service Victoria, get tested within 24 hours of returning to Victoria, and self-quarantine at home for 14 days from when you last left the region.

06.01.2022 Thanks Splitpants Productions for the amazing job you did once again on our Annual Report! Always a pleasure working with you

05.01.2022 The Government's scrapping of Responsible Lending Laws will inevitably lead to thousands of Australians falling into financial strife and suffering as a result.... "If the Government is happy for these kind of situations happening, go for it... but I guarantee if they loosen the rules in a couple of years, everything will turn bad," says Rien Low whose family is experiencing the results of irresponsible lending. https://www.abc.net.au//federal-government-propos/12723652

03.01.2022 So glad to be working with Social Security Rights Victoria & other specialist CLCs to provide advice and assistance to bushfire affected people in our local community.

03.01.2022 From Consumer Action Law Centre: The very first recommendation to come out of the Banking Royal Commission was not to touch the responsible lending laws. But now the government is saying those very laws are making it too hard to get credit in the pandemic-stricken economy. This is slap in the face for the victims would fronted the Royal Commission. "The Treasurer is setting us up for a household debt crisis right in the middle of a recession," says Consumer Action's Katherine Temple. #StopTheDebtTrap #debtdisaster #bankingrc

02.01.2022 One of our most frequently asked questions is can my rent be increased? If you have received a rent increase on or after 29 March 2020, see our website for more information: tenantsvic.org.au/advi/coronavirus-covid-19/rent-increases/

01.01.2022 Bring it on. Financial Counselling Australia's CEO, Fiona Guthrie, had some choice words for the Financial Review about their coverage of responsible lending. If they want a debate, we'd be happy to have it.
