23.01.2022 NEVER. GIVE. UP! Repost from @dustys_urbangarden - So on the 16th of April this year, I posted a phot of how my kale was decimated by the cabbage moth/ butterfly. I paid absolute no attention to it after that. I did not cut it down barely even looked at it. Until today. I went over and saw it had completely grown back nice and strong and ready for eating! Nature does her thing! ... #cant_keep_a_good_kale_down #dustysurbangarden #kale #tuscankale #gardengrubs #ruthstoutmethod #urbanfarming #urbangardening #vegetablegarden #vegetableplot #veggies #homegrown #sustainable #frugalliving #foodisfree #zerofoodmiles #greenthumb #organicgardening #eatwhatyougrow #growyourownfood #gardeningaustralia #veggiesofmelbourne #kaleyard See more
21.01.2022 Any curious crops you want to try growing for the first time this spring? I hope I can get my hands on some viable #luffa seeds. From the cucurbit family, this is edible when young but if you let it dry out it becomes the ultimate zero waste body or dishwashing sponge! Repost from @epicgardening using @RepostRegramApp - LUFFA PEELING! My fellow So Cal gardener @mybrentwoodgarden has been killing it with my #luffachallenge2019 - here she is peeling it back to reveal the sponge...-like fibers within. If you didn't know, this is the plant that produces the natural sponge many of us have seen in our showers! You can also eat these when they're young. The plant is extremely prolific once established, which unfortunately my own luffa vine never quite got to . But I'm very proud and excited for Cheryl of @mybrentwoodgarden as well as the hundreds of other growers around the world participating in #luffachallenge2019 - I'll be collecting all entries soon!
18.01.2022 Our community is so generous even in these strange times! Another bucket of seeds donated via @anappleaday_sunbury today. Thank you to our wonderful seed collectors for helping us to prepare for spring #community #seedlibrary #saveyourseeds #humecitycouncil #sunbury #sunbury3429 #seedsavers #peoplepower
18.01.2022 How’s your winter veg coming along? Repost from @halfwaytonature using @RepostRegramApp - Feels so good to finally be eating from our front garden! These will end up in a chicken soup to hopefully end all sniffles and coughs in our house (for this week anyway) #victorygarden #eatyourgreens #urbanfarmer #homegrown #sunbury3429 #naturesmedicine

14.01.2022 Our little seed library team is having a virtual seed packing catch up around our own kitchen tables tomorrow thanks to the wonders of online conferencing - look out for some spring sowing crops coming soon! Also check out the new design for our reusable envelopes - these can be reused many times and each will carry its own unique story as the lines fill up. #seedlibrary #humeseedlibrary #saveyourseeds #seedsavers #seedpackets #permaculture #broadmeadows #sunbury3429 #craigieburn #tullamarine #bulla #gladstonepark #somerton #roxburghpark #kalkallo #westmeadows #campbellfield #jacana #fawkner #glenroy #greenvale #diggersrest #spring #humecitycouncil #livegreen
13.01.2022 Looking forward to celebrating with the 2020 Enviro Champs at tonight’s graduation - and enjoying the performance by Charlie McGee of @formidableveg . We’ll hear all about the new 2020 Champs’ projects and Christie will share a bit about her journey too. See you there! #transitionstreets #permaculture #graduation #peoplepower #communityaction #thefutureisinyourhands #seedlibrary #sunbury3429
13.01.2022 Hoping against hope that miss 3 doesn’t yank the flowers off this watermelon radish I have managed to keep safe for this long. Note to self always hide a few special plants in hard to find spots next season to give them the best chance to go to seed #seedsaving #radish #seedlibrary #saveyourseeds #gardeningwithkids
12.01.2022 Winter is here and it is a great time to take hardwood cuttings. Do you know someone with a great olive tree, grapevine or currant bush that you would love to have in your own yard? You can take a hardwood cutting now and have your very own. I just stumbled across this excellent website with so much great information.
09.01.2022 It’s another sunny winter’s day and to celebrate 40 trips around the sun, Christie is giving away 40 of her precious veggie seedlings to our local seedy friends! Spinach, lettuce, asian greens and red mustard are all up for grabs - just comment with your preference and I’ll contact you via message tomorrow to arrange pick up. These babies have all been growing happily in the sun and are looking for their forever homes - they’ve enjoyed a chemical free start to life (please don’t comment if you can’t collect from Sunbury) #humecitycouncil #humeseedlibrary #40today #freeplants #lettuce #giveaway #sunbury3429 #sunburyvic #urbanfarmer #homegrownveg
07.01.2022 Yes! We still have some homegrown veggie seedlings left to share with our community! 01.01.2022 Did you grow some beetroot or silverbeet from our winter seeds collection this season? Don’t forget to save a plant for seed collecting - these crops are biennial meaning that they require 2 growing seasons to complete their life cycle. You won’t be harvesting seeds from these until next year #saveyourseeds #seedlibrary #humecitycouncil #seedsavers #permaculture #retrosuburbia #urbanfarm #homegrown #beetroot #silverbeet #rainbowchard
01.01.2022 I just finished packing up some gorgeous Glass Gem corn kindly donated by Liz. Thank you Liz! This corn is so popular it has its own Facebook page! Although it's not a sweet corn, on researching it looks like you can grind it into flour (polenta) or grow it for its striking colours as an ornamental (kids will love this rainbow corn). If you have grown this before, please feel free to comment below with anything you want to share about it. There are only 18 packs of this available with approximately 30 seeds in each one. If you pick up a pack, please think about growing at least 20 and saving 5 of your best cobs for seed. Let's keep this exciting variety in our collection.
