23.01.2022 Hung Phat an oasis in Saigon Place An instrumental version of New York New York plays softly in the background while a giant teapot pours water into an equally giant Chinese teacup. There are pot plants placed strategically to soften the harshness of the faux cane furniture. I find this rather soothing and cooling on a warm Sydney day bordering on 30 degrees Celsius. Of course, having a refreshing tall glass of ice cold Vietnamese coffee adds to the pleasant atmosphere th...at Hung Phat offers. I could be sitting further inside the establishment where it is cooler and quieter, but I prefer to sit near the entrance watching the shoppers go about their business. Hung Phat Tea and Coffee House is a 100% Australian owned company (www.hungphatea.com.au) offering a choice of teas and coffees (both hot or cold), smoothies and pastries. Prices are reasonable, from $3.50 for a small tea to $7 a large smoothie. Every tea or coffee Ive ordered comes with a delightful slice of banana bread, just a nibbly accompaniment to the drink itself. My favourite so far is the refreshingly potent Saigon Brown Coffee. This conjours up memories of the first time I had weasel coffee in Ho Chi Minh city in 2010. One other drink Ive had at Hung Phat is the equally refreshing Ginger Tea which I drink each morning to set the tone for my day. The service at Hung Phat is friendly and efficient. Her mum came in and softly asked her little daughter with a smile: My sweetie, could you give your mum one of your two apples? The girl looked up at her mum for some seconds, then she suddenly took a quick bite on one apple, and then quickly on the other.... The mum felt the smile on her face freeze. She tried hard not to reveal her disappointment. Then the little girl handed one of her bitten apples to her mum, and said: Mummy, here you are. This is the sweeter one. Moral: No matter who you are, how experienced you are, and how knowledgeable you think you are, always delay judgement. Give others the privilege to explain themselves. 09.01.2022 A PICTURE OF PEACE There once was a King who offered a prize to the artist who would paint the best picture of peace. Many artists tried. The King looked at all the pictures, but there were only two he really liked and he had to choose between them. One picture was of a calm lake. The lake was a perfect mirror, for peaceful towering mountains were all around it. Overhead was a blue sky with fluffy white clouds. All who saw this picture thought that it was a perfect picture of... peace. The other picture had mountains, too. But these were rugged and bare. Above was an angry sky from which rain fell and in which lightening played. Down the side of the mountain tumbled a foaming waterfall. This did not look peaceful at all. But when the King looked, he saw behind the waterfall a tiny bush growing in a crack in the rock. In the bush a mother bird had built her nest. There, in the midst of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest in perfect peace. Which picture do you think won the prize? The King chose the second picture. Do you know why? 'Because' explained the King, 'peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. Peace means to be in the midst of all those things and still be calm in your heart. That is the real meaning of peace.'
