23.01.2022 The Hunter Environmental Institute (HEI) was established in 1988 to provide a forum for the interaction of people working in environmentally oriented fields in the Hunter Region. HEI is a non-profit organisation, managed by a committee and operating under a formal Constitution. HEI has been the leading organisation for environmental professionals in the Hunter region for 32 years. HEI are seeking expressions of interested for new committee members to help direct the organisat...ion in the future. As a committee member, you'd be expected to attend monthly meetings and assist in organising events. This would be a time commitment of not more than an hour a week. The current committee includes a range of environmental professionals of different ages and career stages, from various parts of the field. If you're interested, please send us a brief outline by email to [email protected] detailing what you do, and why you're passionate in the environment.

22.01.2022 Where does all our plastic go? This paper published today looked at 112 studies to understand the major global problem of macroplastics. We know that plastics are entering the food web through ingestion by marine animals so we analysed the types of plastics ingested by fishes, sea turtles, whales, and dolphins. ... Overall, clear fibre microplastics are likely the most common type ingested by these marine animals around the globe. This type of plastic commonly comes from our synthetic clothes. To help, choose natural fabrics and avoid fast fashion, or just wash your synthetic clothes less frequently or with a microfibre filter.
