25.01.2022 TUESDAY TIPS THE WHY? OF TRAINING AND EXERCISE SELECTION. A lot of people out there never ask themselves (or their trainer) why am I doing this? What is the thought process behind this workout? Why is this exercise being selected over another? This usually comes down to not understanding what the exercise was intended for and not having a specific goal in terms of WHY you are training in the first place (strength, hypertrophy, weight loss etc) ... Before even picking up a weight or entering a gym ask yourself WHY? What do you want to achieve? Once you figure this out you will be in a better position to formulate a program to achieve these goals. 18.01.2022 First deadlift session dusted with client. Deadlifts are one of those exercises that can be really over complicated or really under coached by trainers. The unique body composition/height/length of legs and torso can drastically change how the exercise is approached and how well suited an individual is to the movement. Dealifts are great but also not the be all and end all of exercises. "Being active and eating healthy have always played a big part in my life because they make me feel good. I actually really enjoy exercise, like bush walking, even just walking around my neighbourhood, running, swimming and exercise / circuit classes where I can learn new exercises to tone my stomach and strengthen my back. I have had an eating disorder in the past so I am aware that being too focused on how I look is not good or healthy. But I do care how I look and feel so being healthy and fit while not being obsessed is my goal. My job and one of my passions is health promotion, which involves working with communities to improve the health of that community. I work with international students to promote the mental health of international students at a university and this reminds me that our mind, body, spirit etc is all connected. And being socially connected and being active have a huge influence on mental health - its all connected! It also encourages me that listening to the community, empowering them and partnering with them to help their community truely is "best practice". People tend to quite commonly suffer from shoulder injuries due to poor exercise selection and execution. 2. Front delt and overhead exercises can in most cases be put on the back burner as in general most peoples front delts are over developed in comparison to the rest of the shoulder and will receive stimulus and growth from most other pushing exercises.... 3. 10.01.2022 FOOD FRIDAY Our spicy curried tomato and chicken soup 1 tbsp olive oil... 4 chillies, sliced (we like it spicy!) 1/2 red onion 1 tsp fennel seeds 1 tbsp curry powder 1 pkt veggie goodness (coles) 200 ml can of diced tomato 2 cups chicken stock 2 chicken breast, diced 1/2 lime juice 1/4 cup cream 1/4 Parmesan cheese Saut chilli, onion fennel seed and curry powder in sauce pan until fragrant. Add veg goodness, fry until slightly tender, then add your can tomato chicken stock and chicken, bring to boil. Once chicken is cooked, add your lime juice, cream and cheese. Luckily I have good genetics for chest and will be able to bounce back quickly. 07.01.2022 Why I DON'T like meal plans. A question i often get asked is if i recommend or have a 'meal plan". The answer is always "NO"... Meal plans are what trainers give to clients because they don't want to bother actually teaching them anything. Its the easy way out and the most basic "one size fits all" approach that you could possibly be given. Instead of teaching the client about calories and energy expenditure you are giving them a set menu that you must not deviate from. This is you being set up for failure! Not only is the menu probably bland and unappealing as all hell, it also does not take into consideration your unique needs. Now because you do not understand how it works, once you deviate from the menu (which you will because its terrible) you end up right back at the start. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR WHAT YOU PUT IN YOUR MOUTH GUYS! (pause) Figure out a goal! Find out what your maintenance calories are! TRACK! 06.01.2022 The fitness industry is crazy. Every coach/PT and his dog have the magical answer to your problem. The PROBLEM is that the solution they often offer is a reflection of their agenda or most likely what they like or even worse...simply works for them.... Crossfitters and "functional" fitness proponents are going to get 40 year old Karen doing Olympic lifts and some ridiculous unscaleable HITT workout. Fasters are going to tell morbidly obese Joe to "just do OMAD man, its the only way...and don't drink that diet coke because it will spike your insulin"... Drug dealing bodybuilders are going to get 21 year olds hooked on gear and teach them fuck all about programming and nutrition. All of these people and situations are examples of an industry that doesn't give a shit about teaching you anything or catering to the specific needs of the individual. While some may care they are too rapt up in there own world view to take knowledge from different disciplines and apply it to themselves and the people they are meant to be helping. When looking at your favourite fitness influencer or even a prospective coach take some time and look at the messaging they are putting out into the world. For example: With bench press instead of slamming the bar up and down from your chest aim to increase the time it takes the bar to travel from the top of the rep to your chest. Instead of 1 second try 3 seconds. Remember the goal is to breakdown the muscle so that it can be rebuilt bigger.
