21.01.2022 Whilst I don’t actively work in the area of Head and neck cancer anymore, I still love keeping my knowledge up to date. Did you know that all speechies need to complete regular professional development to ensure their knowledge and skills are up to date. When I worked in just swallowing and voice in oncology, this was a challenge but now it seems like a monumental task. I work across so many ages, with so many different presentations. Whilst I may not be a specialist in an...y one area I do have a natural curiosity which helps me learn how best to support my clients and their families. If you ever have a question I cannot answer, rest assured I will find out and get back to you!! Repost @millennialmedslp with @make_repost JOURNAL HIGHLIGHT Thank you to @kahla_slp and @slp.doc for sharing this discussion! This article is a review by Susan Langmore of the evidence regarding Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) benefits of patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) after treated with radiation therapy (RT). SIG 13 is hosting a discussion beginning TODAY, December 7th until Friday, December 11th. If you are part of SIG 13 make sure to hop onto the discussion on the SIG 13 Community page! Also download the article while it’s still available for free! Overall the journal shares that NMES has likely no benefit when used post radiation therapy. But it is important to note that although PAS scores and physiology didn’t change, that the participants did report that they could eat faster and easier. So it brings up the BIG question in our field. How as PATHOLOGISTS and clinicians do we balance quality of life (QOL) with findings of persistent aspiration. They both need to be taken into account, the patient needs to be educated and informed, and then ultimately make the right decision for themselves. The spoiler alert is...that more research is needed what else is new in our field? Haha! Langmore, S. (2019). Does Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation Benefit Patients With Head and Neck Cancer Treated With Radiation Therapy? 12.01.2022 Yep!! Spread the word....Hunter Speech Pathology is growing. We are looking for someone fabulous to come and join our multidisciplinary team in the New Year. Keep your eyes peeled on SEEK for our ad in the coming days.

04.01.2022 Last night we celebrated a monumental year with the team at The Lorn Surgery! A year that got off to a slow start and then took off right as the first round of COVID hit. We moved online in a blink of an eye and juggled home life amongst work. We got back into the clinic and then things exploded from there, our books filled and we couldn’t keep up with demand. We had to close our books as the second wave hit and we ended up back in our masks and space suits for some time. No...w we are approaching the end of the year we are growing our service along with other services that will be offered from the surgery in 2021! I am pleased to say that I had Dr Craig Richards and the team at the Lorn surgery to help me ride the wave that was 2020. Also a big shout out to my main man who really runs the business behind the scenes Trephon Stambolie Lastly, a HUGE shout out to all my families. Without you and your support Hunter Speech Pathology would not be what it is today. I am so grateful to work alongside you and help your little and big people kick some massive goals in 2020 despite all the chaos. Big love Nikki

03.01.2022 I am so excited to join everyone in watching this new program to help develop an understanding of the importance of social skills. What I love about this initiative is that it is not just targeted at the child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) but their peers who can be so vital in their integration into play and the classroom. I would love to hear all your feedback too! ... Nikki
