22.01.2022 NDIS Scam This week we were notified of a situation that we feel you need to be aware of, and take precautions to avoid. One of our families have reported this week that their son’s NDIS plan has been the subject fraudulent behaviour. ... An individual or syndicate have managed to hack into a service provider’s, or support worker’s system and illegally obtained over $10 000. The support worker’s identity has been stolen, and a fake invoice was sent to the service provider, giving a new bank account. The service provider has looked at the email address, which only has a letter that was different, and paid the invoice in good faith. The bank account that received the funds has been closed and all funds withdrawn. The police have advised it may be very difficult to trace the activity and it is unlikely that the money will be recovered. They have suggested a few measures that may minimise this happening to others: 1. Ensure that all invoices and information is electronically sent in a PDF version. This makes cloning slightly more difficult and changes can be more easily identified. 2. Have a system in place that ensures that any change of bank details are checked in person with all stakeholders. This checking should be done in several ways and should not just be completed via email. 3. Talk to your providers about their insurance. In current times, cyber security insurance would be recommended, particularly if the service provider is managing significant amount of money. 4. Encourage support workers and other support agencies to invoice regularly this will ensure that if the system is compromised, only smaller amounts of funding may be at risk. Please do not hesitate to share this information with friends of families. The more people and services are aware, the less chance scammers will be successful. The family involved are working with several agencies, including the NDIS to try and find a solution to the issue. We will keep you updated. If you would like to discuss this matter further, please do not hesitate to contact the school. Stay safe everyone! #NDIS
