24.01.2022 HOW WE HELP | A staff member from the NDIS made contact with our content and information officer Melissa (pictured) this week, seeking information on accessible... arts and community activities for a client, who has a child living with autism in the Newcastle area. Melissa e-mailed nine options, in suitable locations, with accurate contact details of phone numbers outline of programs, websites and addresses. Melissa also advised that the costings would depend on the nature of the child’s particular needs and whether the child had a support worker to attend the activities with them. The NDIS officer emailed Melissa today saying. That is amazing, thanks Melissa!" This is what we do! 24.01.2022 We are currently spear-heading a project with the NSW Police and Rescue team, which is centered on refining their search and rescue processes for those with aut...ism and communication challenges (including dementia) who wander. We are looking at awareness building in the community (video and podcasts), police up-skilling, database enhancements and assistive tech devices, to name just a few. It is incredibly important work! Dementia Australia is also part of the working committee, and now we need an Occupational Therapist and an adult with other abilities to join. The committee members will give their time pro bono. If you’re interested, please send your CV and cover letter through to [email protected], explaining your motivation for wanting to be a part of this. . . . . #autismswim #nswpolice #wandering #wanderingprevention #absconding #allabilities #ot #occupationaltherapy #occupationaltherapists #dementia #autism #asd #autismspectrumdisorder

19.01.2022 To support families and carers across regional NSW who need city hospital care a long way from home, the Friendly Faces Helping Hands Foundation has launched a ...refreshed website today, during National Carers Week 2020. The www.friendlyfaces.info website and phone support are a ‘go to’ place for rural patients and their families or carers to access practical support and information for 28 hospitals in NSW and interstate, to minimise the overwhelming feelings of isolation and make a trying time easier. Inspired by her personal journey, Kelly Foran created the Friendly Faces, Helping Hands Foundation and since 2011, over 90,000 country people have been supported through times of crisis. 18.01.2022 The benefits of #sport are universal for ALL children. How would YOU feel if your child’s mainstream team, club or competition integrated kids with a disabilit...y? Would you consider it to be a blessing or a burden? If you’re a #sportsparent of a child with a disability, what’s been your experience? In this episode, you’ll hear our conversation with Rob Regent, founder and head #coach at social enterprise, Everyday Champions, which advocates for integrating kids with disability into mainstream sport. Rob explains the barriers and benefits of #inclusion in sport ...and how the hardest stuff is the attitudinal change for all of us. (Oh, and there's first-time tears on the show.) 18.01.2022 This is entirely different from what can be observed in neurotypical individuals. A lot of people may observe that a child on the Spectrum will very quickly alt...ernate between a joyful emotional state and then into a meltdown and then quickly into another happy state afterwards. This can be incredibly confusing for parents and teachers. This trait is inherited in adulthood and can also be confusing and alarming and many undiagnosed adults can be misdiagnosed with Bipolar, especially females (though Bipolar and Autism can co-occur). Be very aware of these moods and their triggers. Try your best, and be patience. Life is built on trial and error. #nellefrances #nellefrancessensory #aspergerchild #autism #asd #autismawareness #autismacceptance #anxiety #depression.

Venue: ONLINE Cost: FREE (registrations are essential) Thursday 8 October 6:30PM - 7:30PM :: Slow Mushrooming with Dr. Alison Pouliot hosted by MYCOmmunity Applied Mycology. Foraging for fungi is on the rise in Australia. The thrill of the ‘hunt’ is deeply instinctive offering the chance to discover old traditions, new terrains, and tasty fare. It is also controversial. Unlike in other countries, we have only scant knowledge of the edibility and toxicity of Australian fungi. This dearth of information brings with it both the risk of poisoning and environmental harm. In the presentation Dr Alison Pouliot will share her experiences of living across hemispheres, working alongside mycologists and ecologists, foragers and forayers, conservationists, traditional owners and others and the many different approaches to understanding and foraging for fungi. Venue: ONLINE Cost: Donation (registrations are essential) If you are part of a community group or sustainable business and would like us to share an event on Facebook relating to growing food, cooking or living more sustainably (that is suitable for people in the Hunter region to attend), then please send us a message as would love to hear from you! IMPORTANT: If you are unwell or have been in contact with someone with COVID-19 then you MUST stay at home. We all need to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus as much as we can Strict social distancing rules are still in place and please be mindful of these.

04.01.2022 I try to be stoic and not fall foul of my stupid feelings, but this is really bothering me. No one seems to be talking about it. Have you noticed how many grown... men, in their forties, who still wear a baseball cap, tee shirt and jeans, who queue up alongside the kids for the next superhero film? There’s a whole generation of us. Adults that still watch films made for children. Adults that still wear baseball caps and play video games. Adults like me. It’s me too. What are the ramifications? I can think of one unintended consequence... By never really growing up, we’ve somehow confined ourselves to the unattainable virtue that encompasses ‘the superhero’. We’ve blindly accepted a simple world of villainy and virtue, and in doing so have somehow masked the importance of REAL heroes. I grew up with comics and superheroes, but they lived somewhere else. At home, I had Steve Irwin, and Cathy Freeman. Real people, doing amazing things. Are superheroes robbing us of our everyday examples to model ourselves on? Am I thoroughly misguided? I’ve written a book with my older, far more literate sister Hilde. It’s called ‘Heroes Next Door’. It shines the light on real Australians, doing really extraordinary things in the face of adversity. The people we walk past everyday, without consideration. Fuck capes and heroes we can never truly be like. I’m bringing back real heroes, or I’m trying to, at least. Help me here: www.loveyoursister.ecwid.com Samx P.S. I’m not saying no to Batman. I love Batman. As long as we don’t throw out the baby with the bath water, ya know?
