20.01.2022 Why is it so important to have a well fitting saddle on a young and growing horse? There are many important reasons to have a young horse’s saddle fitted correc...tly right from the get go! The clear and most obvious reason is to give the horse a great start to its ridden career by ensuring that the saddle isn’t going to cause any behavioural issues moving forward. These behavioural issues caused by an ill fitting saddle are mostly all caused by pain or discomfort and can be retained in the memory of the horse for it’s entire ridden career. There are many areas that a poorly fitting saddle can cause issues for a young horse starting out. Let’s take a look at a few...... Saddle Tree Shape - The shape of a saddle’s tree needs to fit the shape of the horse’s back. A saddle that is too curved, for example, will cause the saddle to rock from a pivotal point of the horse’s back rather than having a nice even contact along the entire saddle support area. The oppposite of this, a saddle that is too straight on a horse with a curved spine, will create pressure points at the front and rear of the saddle support area. Both of these issues will in turn lead to the horse working incorrectly over the length of the back (including the neck and the hind), developing incorrect muscles right from the start due to lack of freedom for the spine to work correctly. This can cause serious long term damage to not only the horse, but also the rider!!!!! The Saddle Length - it is extremely important that a saddle does not extend past the supporting rib cage of the horse. Having a saddle that is too long will create issues such as bucking, bolting, disuniting in the canter, poor transitions, a four beat canter and hollowing of the spine as the horse tries to avoid pain and discomfort. It is also important to take into consideration when fitting a young horse the change in angle of a horse’s scapula as this in turn will shorten the saddle support area in length as a young horse grows and changes! Tree Width and Angle - it is imperative to monitor both the tree angle and tree width right from the start of a young horse’s ridden career to avoid wastage of their young and developing muscles. A saddle that is too wide or too narrow will lead not only to a poor biomechanical start for a young horse but can also cause training issues when trying to teach a young horse correct canter leads. It can also impede the horse’s natural ability and willingness to move forward and create behavioural issues such as rearing! Routine saddle fitting should commence right from the moment your horse is started under saddle and should continue on a regular basis for the entire time your horse is ridden during its lifetime. We all share a passion for spending time with our best friend in the saddle so make sure you make every effort to ensure their health, longevity and comfort right from the very start! Please feel free to message me for any advice or to make an appointment for a routine fitting!

13.01.2022 Hi, my name is Peta Garrard. I have owned and been involved with horses for over 25years. I have completed a bachelor of Applied Science Equine Studies and decided to expand my knowledge by completing the EQ100, Equinology Equine Body Work course. I found this course to have a huge focus on the anatomy of the horse, which is required to maximise the benefits of massage. Hunter Equine Massage is based in Medowie and covers the Newcastle, Port stephens and Hunter area, provi...ding massage to your Equine partner, no matter the size or discipline, any Equine can benefit from massage. I am fully insured and a current member of International Equine Body Workers Association (IEBWA). Services are $80 and the session normally lasts between 1-1.5 hours. your horse will need a days rest after. So please contact me if you would like to book in.
