10.01.2022 Our crown reserves provide us with a beautiful place to connect to the rest of our community. Meet four Crown Land Managers who ensure it stays that way. Bobin... School of Arts is based in Bobin Hall, an asset of Crown Lands that has become a social centre, evacuation centre, donation centre and recovery centre for families severely impacted by fires. The Cobargo Showground Land Manager manages the Cobargo Showground. The Land Manager is responsible for its care, control and management and are working to build a much-needed modern community facility. Glen Innes & District Historical Society Inc serves as custodian of the Glen Innes & District community and has served as Land Manager and operator of the Land of the Beardies Museum History House & Research Centre. Hunter Multicultural Communities Inc. manages the Reserve that provides a safe space for the aging, vulnerable, at-risk youth, disabled and multicultural individuals and groups and has transformed the Reserve into a true community hub. Did you know you can vote each day for a Department of Planning, Industry and Environment Crown Land Manager Excellence Award Finalist in the People’s Choice Award poll? 05.01.2022 As part of our monthly spotlight on a local community garden, we've been speaking with the HMC - Hunter Multicultural Communities Inc so that we can understand ...a bit about what makes their community garden so special. Hunter Multicultural Communities (HMC) is located in Waratah and part of the services they offer is the Waratah/ Mayfield Community Garden, which has been operating for 6 years. The community garden successfully produces a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices. They also have a lot of "bush tucker" trees and plants as well as flowering plants to attract bees, insects and birds. The produce is distributed to the members and then the surplus offered for sale to visitors of HMC. Anything remaining is then preserved into jams, pickles, chutney's etc and sold to the public, with the proceeds used to continue the wonderful work of the garden. Only natural sprays are used, and the garden likes to use companion planting to deter pests. A very large composting unit provides an outlet for gardeners and visitors to dispose of their organic matter and builds soil to increase the health of the system. They don't have to purchase any soil for filling or topping their beds. The garden is open every weekday to members where everyone assists with the maintenance of the whole garden & surrounds. New and novice members are provided with rules and a conduct sheet, which provides instructions on how to engage with the garden and once involved there are several gardeners with specific skill sets to assist. Skills (current and desired) of all members are documented so that training can be targeted and skills shared. As members of the new Newcastle Seed Libraries they also save seed for their gardens and donations. HMC also share their garden with groups of children, who delight in learning about the different smells, tastes and feel of various plants. This is an important lesson for children, so that they can appreciate where their food comes from. There are also chickens to be fed, eggs to be collected and bees to be inspected! The HMC love what they do, and say that the gardens: Give a sense of belonging to a friendly group Support the sharing of ideas and skills Provide a source of exercise, fresh air and sunshine Give unit dwellers a place to garden Make gardening accessible to those with a disability Help to make new friends!! To get involved or find out more about the HMC Waratah/ Mayfield Community Garden please call in to see their garden coordinator from Monday to Saturday between 9am-2pm at 2A Platt Street Waratah, or by appointment (Margaret 0413 229 740). Family Support Newcastle hosts a regular Gather in the Garden for parents and children every Wednesday fortnight 14th, 28th October, 11th and 25th November from 10am-12pm at HMC - Hunter Multicultural Communities Inc. A light morning tea is provided and to RSVP call 4926 3577 or simply drop in. For more information see: https://www.facebook.com/familysupportnewcastle/posts/3695006147177773 Or come along to the Spring Plant Swap! this Saturday 17th October from 10am-12pm at HMC - Hunter Multicultural Communities Inc hosted by Green Thumb Social. Slow Food Hunter Valley would like to take the opportunity to thank HMC for allowing us to showcase their community garden and wish them all the very best in their planting in the years to come! Community Garden working bees are a great opportunity to talk to the gardeners about what makes their community garden special and to get your hands dirty! And here are some upcoming community garden working bees in the Hunter Valley: Every Tuesday 9:30AM - 1:30PM at Largs. If you are part of a community garden with a working bee, meet up or event then please send us a message so we can share with the Hunter Valley community! IMPORTANT: If you are unwell or have been in contact with someone with COVID-19 then you MUST stay at home. We all need to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus as much as we can Strict social distancing rules are still in place and please be mindful of these.
