25.01.2022 Work your problems backwards. If we try to meet the problem at the problem it is usually a step too far, or in most cases several steps too far. Let me explain with an example. You have a problem getting a horse to go on a float and be locked in. So you get a load of helpers and some ropes and you pull him at one end and push from the other and make sure someone is ready to shut that tailgate!... That is what can happen when we meet the problem at the problem. We think the only solution is to get him in and get him locked in. If we worked the problem backwards we might ask some questions. At what point does he say no? Why might he be saying no? Do I have enough trust? Is he scared or anxious? Am I a clear leader? Do we have enough language together? These questions will tell you where to start your work and with float loading, it is always away from the float. When you work backwards you will find the smaller steps and build calm confident horses who suddenly don't have "the problems".
24.01.2022 If you fake it, you won't make it. When I was younger I often heard people say, "show the horse you are boss" or "don't let him know you are scared". Who are we kidding the horse already knows everything about us from 50m away.... We can't try to "fake it", to show no fear or become bossy. We just have to be real. We need to feel the fear and be kind to ourselves, to breath with the fear, to centre ourselves. Being authentic and vulnerable around horses is not weak, it is essential, in that state the horse will help us. In vulnerability we will see the parts of us that need healing, need attention, need examination. Being real means being open to change, awareness and growth.
22.01.2022 This is what we do. CONNECTION
20.01.2022 Great session with Jayne and Billy today. We played with helping Billy to find a more stretchable posture. The photos tell the story. 1st. Billy can tend to travel head high and a little hollow. 2nd.Jayne encouraged stretch through relaxation, rhythm and timing.... 3rd.Billy found his way a little lower without rein aids or manual manipulation. Congratulations Jayne, simple but effective concepts in action. See more
18.01.2022 Today's story is going to make you laugh if you read yesterday's post. So today it's the end of the day, I want to call the herd in to check on them, give Elmo some medicine and check in for the day. Out I go and do the big "come on ". I can't see our whole property, there are wooded areas, a creek crossing, a few acres behind the treeline, some hills and flats. I often call into the distance and they appear from the far reaches.... "Come On", we could see 3 and those 3 came as usual, but the other 3 weren't in sight. That in itself is a bit unusual normally they are fairly close together. You know this feeling don't you? Things aren't normal, something is wrong! A feeling in the pit of your stomach, 3 horses MISSING !! Kavalier, Solomon and Raphael [my cheeky ones] I sent Emma in the direction they normally come from, to cross the creek and search the far paddock. I continued to call from home base where the other 3 were now munching on some feed. Emma emerged with no sighting, next plan was to jump in the car and search, we were expecting a break in the fence and naughty boys out exploring. Off in the car, we went with halters, feed, fencing equipment, first aid kit. As we drove down the back of the property we came over the hill to find 3 content horses grazing in our paddock peacefully. Unlike yesterday, they were quite content to ignore the call and stay exactly where they were. What happened next is the best part of the story. They saw the car coming and trotted toward us, popped heads in our car through the window and said hello. Then followed us up the paddock, trotting happily behind the car. Funny Funny boys, I am so grateful to have them in my life. I think Emma got some video of them following the car, I'll post that later. See more

04.01.2022 I read something on Warwick Schiller's page and it resonated so strongly with me that I couldn't say it better. Warwick was talking about his focus on relational interactions with horses and here is what he said. THE RELATIONSHIP PATH "This is the path I currently use with horses I interact with. It is based on connection first, before training. It's still about training, I'm not a hangout and kiss the pretty ponies kinda guy (I'm more of a hangout and kiss the ponies becau...se it will make them easier to train kinda guy. But I think the more I hang out and kiss the pretty ponies the more I appreciate it for just what it is). This path requires some self-reflection, it makes you be aware of your emotions, your thoughts, your judgements, and your energy. Once you start becoming aware of those sorts of things, you start to feel the ground beneath your feet start to shift a little and when you look down you find yourself sliding into the entrance to a rabbit hole, and you catch a glimpse of a white rabbit a little further down there. Since you have seen the movie the Matrix, you know that you should follow the white rabbit. Pretty soon you are in Wonderland. With this path, every time you search for the answer to a question, you find more questions. And you love it. You start to lose the feeling of being frustrated by not getting to your goal and start to develop a sense of curiosity." ~Warwick Schiller This is where I am in my horsemanship path too. I'm headed down that rabbit-hole. AND I LOVE IT If you are also wanting to peek down this hole and stretch your current beliefs and perhaps limitations around horses I invite you to come down with me. My workshop on the 18th will be strongly focused on relational work and all things rabbit holeish. Message me for a booking form, a few spots left.
02.01.2022 Here is something you could consider today. Can we lose the idea that escalating pressure is the way to have horses do something? I know it's taught, heck I have taught it. How would it look to erase the idea of escalating pressure and to replace it with clearer not louder?... It might look slower It might look like much smaller steps It might feel like you aren't making a huge impression It might feel good It might feel more in line with how you really want things to unfold, but you just haven't known how. I like to have a mantra in my mind that says, could you XYZ, let me help you. In that "let me help you", I'm trying to be clearer, have more micro-steps, see the small no and the small yeses. I'm failing forward with this just as you all will be, we won't get it right all the time, sometimes we will be too quick, too slow, not quite focused, a muddy intention, a busy mind, but if we can just draw attention to clearer not louder, I think we will find our way forward, in a way that is good for us and good for the horse. Have a wonderful weekend coming up and let me know how this idea plays out with your horses. Love Fran
01.01.2022 CANCELLED: Ladies Day 29th November. With the revised forecast for Sunday, I'm afraid we will need to cancel our Ladies day, even an early start isn't going to save us from the heat and high winds. Temperatures could reach 43 degrees, certainly not weather for travelling horses either :(
