16.01.2022 Upcoming Talk by Judy Webster Look Beyond the Border! Archival records with data for interstate and overseas folk. Archives in a particular region contain a surprising amount of information about people who lived and died in other States and other countries. This talk describes various types of family history data in places where you may not think to look. It gives examples of unexpected discoveries in records that are held far from where the subject lived. Sources include probate records, Premier's Department undertaking files, police correspondence, records of railway shareholders, border crossings and quarantine camps, and many more. Sat. 19 May 2018, 11am - 12noon.

14.01.2022 Newcastle City Library and Archives are currently updating their online presence. This includes exciting new additions around their archival holding such as finding aids being placed online, new topical sections being created (for example, pages for each of the old suburban councils listing records held and brief histories) and new and updated images in Hunter Photobank. Exciting news also in the development and implementation of a new volunteer policy that allows more community access to work on records onsite (photographing etc). https://newcastle-collections.ncc.nsw.gov.au/library

02.01.2022 The Pender Archive "The Pender Archive consists of 2,562 individual architectural projects and includes many original water colour drawings of private and public buildings across northern NSW. The collection comprises the achievements of three generations of the Pender family as architects in Maitland, spanning 125 years from the 1860s to the 1980s." These plans are both informative and beautiful. They'd make a great addition to any family history publication.

02.01.2022 Genealogists and family historians know all about the treasures that live in archives. But sometimes it can be difficult finding the actual archives!! The Australian Society of Archivists has recently updated their Australian archives directory. This directory lists a large number of educational, state, business, church, sporting and other archives that operate in Australia. The directory doesn't go into great detail about the holdings of the archives but rather gives details about the archives themselves - where they are, what their holdings cover, how to contact them etc. https://directory.archivists.org.au/

01.01.2022 A key concept when dealing with the preservation and conservation of historical documents is that any storage solution or treatment must be reversible. The consequences of not abiding by this concept can be dire. Never laminate documents.
