25.01.2022 St Peter Chanel Church - Development Update: A Win for Heritage in the Land and Environment Court! Following the formal onsite meeting of the Land and Environment Court on 28 May, the Trust is pleased to report that the L&E court has refused the DA but encourages members to maintain a watching brief in case the decision is appealed. Council’s solicitors wrote to residents setting out the reasons for the judgement as follows: The Commissioner’s ‘reasons for refusal chiefly rel...ated to the proposal’s detrimental impact on the heritage significance of the site, including impacting on views to and from the Church, the impact on the setting and curtilage of the Church as well as the uncertainty regarding contamination of the site.’ The Trust supported Hunters Hill Council in believing the sub-division would have been entirely unsuitable for the site. Apart from detracting from the character of the Church’s setting within the heritage of Crescent Street and compromising a significant landmark visible from the water, the location would have been difficult to build on and would have resulted in the destruction of the sandstone rock shelf and mature trees. We congratulate all residents and objectors who presented such a strong case and stood up in defence of heritage. www.huntershilltrust.org.au

20.01.2022 'Kyarra' (c. 1886), Madeline Street, Hunters Hill This grand 11-room stone house was built by Felix Cullen in 1886 for letting and owned by his widow until 1906. Later owners/tenants included the Addison, Windeyer and Bevan families. A quarry operated on the steeply sloping western side of the garden for some years. The well-known journalist James Kingston ('King') Watson and his wife Eleanor spent years restoring Kyarra in the 1950s. www.huntershilltrust.org.au

15.01.2022 "Figtree House", Hunters Hill. Figtree House was built in three stages. Mary Reibey (Reiby), a well-known merchant, named the property after a Port Jackson Fig, beside which she had two small cottages built in 1836, probably to house convict labour for the farm. It is said that she delighted in using the farm, with orchard, as a retreat from Sydney, but in 1838 the farm was offered for sale (see Figtree Area). It was not sold, and Joseph Fowles leased the farm, as did subseq...uent tenants, until Didier Joubert purchased the entire property (which Mrs Reibey had increased by acquiring neighbouring land grants) in 1847 for 500, paid in instalments over four years. In 1848 Joubert added a two-storey stone wing and paved verandah, making one house out of the two cottages. It has been written that this was the first home of the Jouberts in the district and that they lived here while building St Malo (now demolished); it has also been written that they lived in Reibey Cottage until St Malo was ready for occupation. Certainly, Sands Directory when listing occupants does not distinquish among the buildings on Figtree Farm until after Didier Joubert’s death in 1881. His son, Numa Joubert, added the timber tower, which was constructed by shipwright Joseph Howard, who lived here for some years. Because of its tower, this house has long been a landmark in Hunters Hill, associated through many decades with ferry service (1871-1905) and, when that ceased, with boatsheds and a jetty where the Figtree Bridge is now. Figtree House is the sole remaining building from Figtree Farm. www.huntershilltrust.org.au

The 14m high structure on the corner of Luke Street and Gladesville Road will significantly alter the character of the streetscape and tower over the adjacent heritage sandstone wall. You can view the plans or make a submission at the NSW Major Projects website where the plan is currently on exhibition: http://majorprojects.planning.nsw.gov.au/index.pl
