24.01.2022 Thanks to everyone that paid homage and respect to our Veterans today And a MASSIVE THANKS to all our veterans for fighting for the freedoms we all have and making the sacrifices to achieve this. My heart goes out to you and your families.... Anything I can do to repay you is a mere drop in the ocean. Even though the linked video is about our American' Brothers & Sisters Veterans Day I think it captures what the service, sacrafice and all the other ANZAC values are about. LEST WE FORGET https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkXYya0uwHE
24.01.2022 With the weather system that passed through the Sou-east of Australia last night good luck to all the hunters on the NZ'd West Coast over the next 48 hours. Get those tents secured and be ready to bunker down huntress's and hunters. I'd reckon it going to be a wild one. Good luck, stay safe and straight shooting. Dave Hunting Arete
24.01.2022 Gidday Ladies and Gentleman. Episode 21 of Hunting Arete Podcast, Game Management 101 is live now. I speak with Kiwi Hunter and Biologist, Cam Speedy, about game animal management and in particular the management of Non-native Game, as deer are here in Australia and New Zealand. Cam has the passion of a Hunter, understands the approaches of government departments and has the professional knowledge get the balance right of improving the quality of hunting whilst maintaining an...d improving the quality of the environment. Cam's work with the Fiordland Wapiti Foundation is testament to his getting the balance right. As usual you can listen, or download, the Hunting Arete podcast through iTunes/Apple Podcast, Stitcher, Google Play or the Website. http://huntingarete.com.au/episode-21-game-management-101/
23.01.2022 Only in Alaska.
22.01.2022 Gidday all. Well its been a bit to long since our last episode. How time flies with work and family, and we are about to hit the silly season. I pushed hard over the last two days to get the latest podcast produced. I have had some feedback and not unfairly, that the Johnny Royle podcast sound quality was poor and I apologise for that. We did have a bad line but then my "production"skills let me down too. Still real raw at this. And I have some more learning to do and I compo...unded that over the last two days by switching to new audio production software and I feel that I have made some improvements but still there is room to go. So Episode 13 Beyond the Divide is out now. I caught up with Rob Fickling a second time to talk about how he got into making a hunting show for television and all the challenges that go with it. http://huntingarete.com.au/episode-13-beyond-the-divide/
22.01.2022 Gidday all. Its been a busy week with prep for three upcoming podcasts, recording of another three podcasts and plenty of development work in the background. I am now starting to get into a good workflow with the podcast around family, work and recreation.... If you really want to stay up to date and hear some insider info head over to the website, scroll to the bottom of the home page and subscribe. I am always planning more content and subscribe contributions are welcome. Flick me any ideas and suggestions on any area, content or subject we can have a chat about getting it done. Dave http://huntingarete.com.au/
21.01.2022 Guys and Gals get on this and support CR Lewis Contracting's efforts to raise money in Suicide Prevention and Mens Health. In the hunting community in just the last three months we have lost revolutionary thinkers Jason Hairston, of KUIU, and Matt March of Palidin, that I know of. We need to build the links within, and to outside of our community, amongst men and women, so anyone in need, feels they will be supported and feels comfortable in reaching out for assistance, whet...her that be guidance in finding professional help or just a friendly ear to chat too. Great work https://www.facebook.com/C-R-Lewis-Contracting-11105582257/
21.01.2022 Episode 32 Crossroads with Chris Lewis of C.R. Lewis Contracting is now live. Trad Archer, Jimmy Beehag, returns and adds the extra element of inquiry and experience. The three of us chat about Chris's history, his foray into pest management, public lands, hunting and the differing approaches of several land managers.... You can find Chris on Instagram @crlewis_contracting You can find the Podcast at the website, on Google Play, Apple Podcast, Stitcher and Spotify. Thanks for the support and gives the podcast a review on any of the various platforms. http://huntingarete.com.au/
20.01.2022 Ladies Gents Episode 20 of Hunting Arete Podcast is now live. This episode marks one year and this has been the toughest talk I've had during this year. This episode is Anthony Campbell story of what happens a when Bull Tahr Hunt goes tragically wrong on the west coast of New Zealand. Anthony talks of the lead up, the incident and how he dealt with this terrible situation.... I sincerely thank Anthony, and the Campbell family for sharing this deeply personal story. A special thanks also goes out to Dave Brinker from Montana. As per normal the podcast is available on Stitcher, iTunes, Spotify, Google Play or the website. http://huntingarete.com.au/episode-20-loss-adversity-culmi/
20.01.2022 Episode 28 out soon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1KoMTDxl4I
19.01.2022 Ladies & Gents Episode 22 Fly Bow and Baby is live now, April Vokey joins me to talk all things fishing and hunting. A smart savvy woman, April has great thoughts and experiences and opinions on all aspects of what is important to bot Hunters and Anglers.... As usual listen through Stitcher, Apple Podcast, Google Play, Spotify and the website. http://huntingarete.com.au/episode-22-fly-bow-baby/
18.01.2022 Ladies and Gents Episode 27 is out now, Life of a NZ Govt. Culler. A small apology. In the intro I mention some events concerning hunting in Australia, and in particular Tasmania and Bow Hunting. Well, I had a slip of the tongue and stated that there has been a 'blanket ban of bow hunting in New Zealand' That is incorrect. ... The blanket ban has been put in place by the Tasmanian Government in Tasmania. And it just goes to show how quickly some organised and influential people can be at distorting the facts to get a outcome that suits their agenda. Hence a great example of why we hunters need to be organised, and allied across all of the different hunting methods, and push back against these campaigns of misinformation. Personally, I am off to an appointment with my local Member of Parliament tomorrow to talk with him on the subject of hunting. Anyways, thanks for the continued support and enjoy the latest episode. http://huntingarete.com.au/episode-27-life-as-a-governemnt/
18.01.2022 I meant to clear this issue up last episode but have only just been reminded of it. Some of you aren't running podcast apps and asked how you can down load the podcast to phone, pc , tablet etc. Well I have worked out the backend libsyn link to do that. If you go to the Hunting Arete website Home page and click on the "Download Episode" button a new tab should open up and you can use the download button on this page to do so.... The button has a symbol of a arrow going into a box. I renew this link with every episode as its unique. Link below for Episode 31. https://oembed.libsyn.com/embed?item_id=11823638
18.01.2022 Gidday all. Given the tragic deaths in our community recently, Jason Hairston and Matt March two name but two, and the efforts of others to help raise money towards mens health it would be neglectful of me not to assist with this cause. My strategy is not to shave till the end of November and then I will see my Barber and she can shape it into what she sees best.... I will keep this effort upto date here and on the Hunting Arete Instagram page. To donate to this worthy cause please go to https://mobro.co/13943652?mc=1 Thanks in advance for the support Dave
18.01.2022 Ladies & Gents with the fires raging across Eastern Australia and many loosing all the worldly possessions those effected will have at minimum a very tough eighteen months ahead of them. These scenarios can spiral out of control for many individuals. Mental health is the key here.... As we all know the mere act of getting out for a short hunt or just putting some rounds or arrows down range can have a positive benefit on our outlook on life. Now what I am proposing is not an original idea, I.E. I don't want any credit for this, I just want to assist and see action. I first heard about it arising from the California fires last year. Lets get a group of us together, spread across the Nation, to help out the Hunters that have been so heavily affected and donate some unwanted gear or go buy a gift voucher or some equipment to donate to those Hunters that have lost everything. I think we spread the word and find some businesses that are in regional areas that are willing to help and become central donation collection receivers and some volunteers that assist is collection and distribution to those in need. Let me know what you think. I have set up a FB page as a central point of Operations. https://www.facebook.com/groups/460844054849105/
17.01.2022 Keep an, eye on the website over the next few weeks. I am adding some extra content.. Firstly will be a "Downloads" page to enable listeners to get access to more content and information that guests have provided. I have started work on this but being a bit technically challenged in the website world I am still stumbling through the build, so some links are incomplete yet.... Once again thanks for the on going support. Dave

17.01.2022 Episode 41 of the Hunting Arete Podcast is live now. I talk with life long Tasmanian Hunter and Fly Fisherman Shane Broadby. His experiences and memories from fishing and hunting are integral in his recovery from a Brain tumor. Many of these occurred on Public Lands, something worth fighting for.... Thanks for the support, http://huntingarete.com.au/episode-41-roaming-with-rod-rif/
17.01.2022 Ladies & Gents. Just loaded up Episode 17, Behind the Scenes, with Barry Howlett from the Australian Deer Association. We talk about what does and can go on behind the scenes of protecting and promoting Hunters rights.... It doesn't matter where in the world you are from there are lessons to be learned from doing things better to not repeating mistakes of others. We can all help each other, around the globe, by sharing our experiences in negotiations for, and on the behalf of Hunters and Anglers. And please go and drop a review on what ever platform you choose to listen to Hunting Arete Podcast on. It only serve to boost the visibility of the podcast and provide cause and reason to continue to get great content out to you the listeners. 15.01.2022 Ladies & Gents Episode 18 Live Now. As per normal via the website, Stitcher, iTunes, Spotify, Google Play for download or streaming. And on a side note that is always a concern to me, the sound quality. Yes the last episode wasn't the best. I wont rest on my laurels and I am working with a good mate to improve this aspect for the benefit of you the listeners and the guest.... The first step is already complete with the order of several sets of Sennheiser USB miked-up headsets for the guest to use via Skype. This doesn't come with out ongoing cost of posting them around the country so your support is appreciated. Spread the word, all round the world of the Hunting Arete podcast. Thanks Dave

10.01.2022 Well it is always great to read some positive stuff in the mainstream media about hunting. See below. And a quote about the findings of the study by Barry Howlett of Australian Deer Association "He said he was not surprised by the findings that hunters had "higher physical activity" and "higher levels of wellbeing" when compared to the general population.... "There's big mental health benefits to hunting we put that down to the community aspect," This is a topic that I and many of my guests have spoken about many times. How good do you feel when you get back home after a few solid days hunting in the bush? Even if you are unsuccessful. That mental lift is enormous and we need to spread the word on these esoteric benefits of hunting so more people begin to understand that hunting is far more than "just the kill". Spread the word ladies and gents. https://www.abc.net.au//hunting-contributes-more-/11539746
10.01.2022 Episode 29 is live. Likely the most candid and down to earth talk I have had with any of my guests to this point. Josh James, The Kiwi Bushman, shares his thoughts on life, experiences growing up in the socially rough areas of New Zealand and his motivations that continue to drive him to this day. ... Thanks for your time Josh. As per usual you can download or stream through the website or stream via Spotify, Stitcher, Google Play or Apple Podcast. http://huntingarete.com.au/episode-29-kiwi-bushman-high-on/
09.01.2022 Ladies and Gentleman occasionally we see a real gem of a film produced on hunting issues. This is one of them and close to my heart. https://www.youtube.com/watch
09.01.2022 Ladies and Gents, at the suggestion of a good mate who has read my material in the past and loved it, I have started writing a series of articles on a rifle build I am doing. This one will be different. No pressure for completion, no preconceived ideas, just exploring the choices, examining the process and enjoying the journey. And sharing it with you along the way. ... I hope someone gets something out of the journey, picks up some hints and maybe it makes a decision easier for a new gat. http://huntingarete.com.au/montana-mountain-gal-1/
09.01.2022 Episode 8 Passion & Purity of Purpose with Jamie Carle is live now. http://huntingarete.com.au/episode-8-passion-purity-of-pur/
09.01.2022 Guys and gals I try and stay well clear of the political scene. But when it comes to the erosion of access to OUR Public Lands and the hunting we enjoy and cherish in New South Wales State Forests I can't sit idly by. It well and truly appears that the NSW Liberal Government is on their way to attempt to privatise Forests NSW. See Below. In my experience, which is close and personal, nothing can be guaranteed regardless of any and all political rhetoric and legislative requ...irements, once privatisation of Public Assets occurs. Rest assured that if this goes through Public Land Hunting in NSW is done forever. Yet this is not just only about hunting. We need to put aside our differences and spread the word to all Public Land users and the entire population of NSW and bordering states to stop this privatisation occurring. We need to inform and involve, Mum and Dad Campers, Trail Bike Riders, Mountain Bikers, Anglers, Bird Watchers, Mushroom Pickers, Fossickers, Bush Walkers, Four Wheel Drivers and Bee Keepers of the impending loss and restriction to access of OUR LAND. Further, the potential unregulated and mismanaged logging in Privatised Forests will see untold damage, sedimentation and erosion to the upper catchments of vast water sheds that provide the initial drops of flow to the creeks and rivers that supply water to our towns and cities. Rivers such as the Murray, Peel, Manning and Hunter to name but a few. And the potential negative effects would go on with the long term economic viability of surrounding small towns grossly effected by a short term, unsustainable grab at the Forestry resources, most likely from large Internationally backed corporations. You only have to look where much of the timber from NSW State Forest Pine Plantations is being shipped to. China. Contact and encourage any and all persons you know from any of these user groups to seek a appointment with their local NSW Member of Parliament to express their concern about privatisation of Forests NSW and to implore them to keep it in the People hands for generations to come. https://www.themandarin.com.au/114018-privatisation-is-sho/

Roy tells us about the successes and difficulties of the management of Non-native Game in a Wilderness Area whilst still maintaining quality hunting opportunities. 06.01.2022 Ladies & Gents, today the issue of long term lease (privatisation by stealth) of NSW State Forests has hit the media. Having very close personal and professional experience of NSW Government Corporations privitisation, this is a very bad thing for many State Forest users. It will most likely lead to wide scale restriction of access to many of State Forests using the Workplace Health and Safety Regs to stop access to forests being logged.... This is a short term money grab by the current government that will lead to a long term loss of Public Lands access and use to many users, not just Bee Keepers. State Forest NSW has long completed an excellent job of sustainable timber harvest, both native and pine/softwood, with great regards to the environment. A private operator will only see the lease as a short term cash grab. This will lead to much rationalization and rural job loses utilising financially large, lean, mean contractors. There will be a erosion in controls and management of logging practices, pun intended. No doubt leading to damage of the catchments of many creeks and streams. These creeks and streams flow into our major rivers that supply freshwater to our cities and town. Take Nundle State Forest for example. It is a catchment for rivers such as the Manning and the Peel which supply water to Taree and Tamworth. And this is just one such area. Think southern NSW and the proximity to the Murray River and it could become a cross border issue. Please take the time to email your local member. And then pick up the phone to them, make a appointment and go spend fifteen minutes with him or her, to express your dismay and lack of support of this proposal which will lead to further erosion of Public Lands access. And member that is not just about Hunters but many Public Lands Users and future generations of users to come and reap the benefits of these great Public Lands. Thanks All.

04.01.2022 I finally got the first Hunting Arete video filmed and edited. Another learning curve with plenty more to learn about and improve. https://youtu.be/je7hJh0IbN4
03.01.2022 There are some hunters out there that capture the essence of why we, as hunters, should care about the wild places we have access to and are allowed to hunt. In particular Public Lands. When it comes to deer in Australia I see them as wild animals, not native but certainly wild. Yes, we need to control them, yet they provide a wonderful resource as a means to the magnificent experiences we are able to have in stunning locations were we hunt them. ... Those experiences, the positive affect they have on our well being, state of mind and the ongoing memories we have of a successful hunt as we share the pristine meat with friends and family only serves to enrichen our lives. All hunters around the world should cherish, protect and fight to maintain and expand theses opportunities and access, no matter where on this planet the fight is. This film and the men in it used their passion to show others how and why. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hm7ybDGoHd8&t=9s

01.01.2022 Episode 32, Crossroads, with Chris Lewis, of C.R.Lewis Contracting will be live real soon. But why "Crossroads" you may ask. Well Chris's work is at the crossroads of hunting, shooting, conservation and pest management. A intersection if you may of many themes and activities we hunters are involved in.... Then there is 'a crossroads' a time where crucial decisions must be made. And decisions must be followed up by action. As decisions not acted upon, are merely mental masturbation. Chris, Jimmy Beehag and I go on to discuss the importance of Public Lands, to multiple users. The difference in management results by the various authorities and how we as hunters and fishers could possibly engage others for the benefit of all Public Land Users. Stay tune for a top discussion. Dave
01.01.2022 Gidday All. I need a bit of a pointer or assistance. Does anyone have a contact that is good artist or cartoonist that may be able to assist me with some possible T Shirt designs?... Thanks All Dave
01.01.2022 Ladies and Gents as you probably realise there is a lot of work goes into planning, recording, producing and loading up the Hunting Arete podcasts. It is something that I enjoy doing and it gives me immense satisfaction when I receive positive feedback. Yet it takes away time from family, friends and socialising. Hunting Arete has never been about me but about the people I have on the podcast, how they get things done, what they take out of it and what it means to them.... To keep the content up and lively please help increase Hunting Aretes profile by giving us a review. Good or Bad, it all helps but if bad let me know why. To do so just visit the links below.
